I am a student on a budget but I also need the a laptop that is able to withstand Auto-Cad or 3-D BTP, which laptops could I buy?

I looked at HP's, Dells, Lenovo, Acers, all of them but which one actually works and withstands time?

Answer
Just make sure it has a good pad (big and smooth), I'd go for a 15 inch screen to keep it portable, lots of memory and hard drive space. Hp is a well known company, but pretty much all company's build off of separate parts from other companies.

What is the perfect laptop for students on a budget?

Momo333

Has to have the low price and all or some of the other criteria. Maybe even something more.

I'm looking for a laptop that's cheap, will last long without charger, has enough memory for games and rosetta stone. I want a window (xp or vista), has wifi, maybe webcam, has memory card slots (and usb :-p), and comes with applications like microsoft word.

Price range for me is max is $500 anything below is good :]

Answer

I will be attending college in the fall and need a laptop. I'm feeling more of a pc over Mac because of the cost. I'm looking for a laptop that will surf the Internet, type papers, presentations, check email stuff like that. I would also like a 15 in screen size with pretty good graphics. The most important parts for choosing a laptop for me is the battery life, speed, and how well ill be able to connect to wifi in a crowded lecture hall of 200 people. My spending limit is $1300. I also have never really used windows 8 so if you have any reviews of it that would help because I'm reading mixed reviews of it.

Answer
Here is some links to help make the disaster called Windows 8 livable. Each one is worth the read time. They really help get Windows 8 to look and work like Windows 7.

Brand buying advice

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. Lenovo will not allow people to read instruction on how to access the BIOS menu or to get info on their puters on their web site unless you connect to them thru Facebook. They do this so they can spy on their users. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

:)

What mac laptop would be best for a college student?

Tinkertoes

I am not familiar with Mac brand and not sure what laptop would be the best for me. I would like a fast and reliable, lots of memory, doesn't crash or get overheated but still can enjoy watching DVDs on it. I'm currently a college student which means this computer is going to be running most of the day. Does anyone have suggestions?

Answer
Macs won't crash on you, they are fast and reliable. They get warm but don't overheat. All Mac laptops come with a CD/DVD burner and reader. You won't have any problems watching movies on them.
Don't forget you can get student discounts on any Mac you buy. They often offer to throw in a free iPod Touch too.

My Suggestions:

If you are on a budget then get the 13" Macbook (the one witht the white case). If you want more power or a larger screen size then go for the Macbook Pro. Look carefully at the specifications of the laptop you buy. Faster harddrives (4500rpm vs 5400rpm) will suck more life out of your battery , but will make your computer work faster. The Macbook Pros will have a longer battery life than the Macbook. It might be a dealbreaker if you spend all day in class.

Note: you can run windows natively on a Mac using bootcamp. So yes you can keep your windows games too. Just remember, if you have windows on it, you open yourself up to windows isssues (viruses, malware etc).

What is the best laptop/notebook for a college student?

Missa_805

I would like to know what laptop/notebook is the best a college student. I probably need a lot of memory on it and it should be able to fit in a back pack without being to heavy. Also do colleges make you have a certain laptop/notebook? I am going to a community college, would it matter?

Answer
The requirements for college are actually some of the lightest, as most of what you do is browse for information/email/course work and word processing.

What you need to look are also the other factors, such as battery life, weight, and what you are going to use it for.

Netbooks : Great for portability, great battery life (up to 7-10 hours in same cases), all in one unit. Negatives : Small keyboard, Small screen, No CD/DVD drive.

Laptops: all around great, however they can be a bit larger and heavier.

I would look for a $500 laptop from either HP, Dell, or toshiba

try to get :
Core 2 duo
3 gigs memory

good luck

Do you need a laptop for a computer science major?

crisis

I'm looking to purchase a new computer. I'm taking computer science at college in the fall and common sense would tell me I need to buy a laptop as I might need to bring it in for presentations and notes and programming. I realize that not every classroom I'll be in will have a comprehensive computer lab. Is this a correct assumption and should I buy a laptop for school.
or are my assumptions not true and a laptop won't be needed and I should buy another desktop?

Answer
That would depend on what college you will be attending. One of the techs that I use as a subcontractor attended one university and had a daily need for a laptop from his sophomore year to his final semester. Based on his experience, another one of my subs, who is now a senior in the Computer Science curriculum at a different university, bought a laptop which hasn't been out of his apartment except when he takes it along to do a little homework on skiing weekends.

My best advice would be to get one if you can afford the cost differential between a laptop and a desktop, since the laptop gives you far more flexibility (like the one tech's skiing weekends). But if money is at all tight, talk to your advisor first, and find out whether the CS curriculum at your college would necessitate having a laptop. If not, you'll get far more bang for the buck, from a system capability standpoint, with a desktop.

what is the best laptop for students?

Jonathan

I'm starting 11th grade next year and I'm getting a laptop for the first time. What would be the best laptops for students. Can someone give me a list to choose from?

Answer
The laptop with the light weight is usually good for students because it helps them in carrying with them easily. So considering this fact I would recommend a laptop from ASUS. It is really good for students because of its weight of 2.9 pounds and screen size of 11.6 inches.

Also it has good features as well which includes:

It has decent and fast Intel Core i3-3217U 1.8 GHz Processor
Good multitasking 4 GB DDR3
Enough storage with 500 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
11.6-Inch LED Touchscreen with Intel GMA HD Graphics
And it has Windows 8 with the affordable price of under $430.

Alongside these good features it has actual good performance as well. It is good in each aspect of its performance. There's a very good user review here, from an owner of this laptop explaining about the performance. It should help your decision:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R21K6JZ7TOJWQ3/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B009F1I1C4&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=daieom-20

So by seeing its features and analyzing its performance from the comment of an actual user. It is a perfect laptop for the students. But if you want to see other good options in the market then see the list here of best selling laptops in the market:

I need it to run all the Autodesk programs and such.
What laptops would be good for running that?

Answer
Definitely go with Lenovo, most people are not familiar with the brand, but the truth is Lenovo is just the re-named IBM which is one of the BEST laptop names out there. Lenovo is perfect for engineering especially for installation of autodesk, autocad programs. You will not find a better laptop for engineering or general computing. Before med school, I use to assist my dad who owns a computer store and sells laptops, NEVER once have we got a returned lenovo. It is by far the best brand laptop. You can't call yourself an engineer if you don't own a Lenovo.
BTW : don't go with Dell or HP they experience serious overheating problems and their chipsets on the mainboard are burnt out in like 3 mths.
Good Luck !

What kind of laptop should I get for college?

christine

What are some things i would want in a laptop for college? And what kinds of laptops are best (Macs or PCs) for what i need? I am considering graphic design and fashion design as majors, but I will also be taking liberal arts classes. I also want to use the laptop for things like internet, typing, music, pictures, and the usual. Any advice/suggestions?

Answer
If you are going into graphic/fashion design, you will need / want a laptop with upgraded graphics and processing power. You will likely also want a monitor with high resolution. I'd look for a laptop with:

a discrete graphics card (not Intel HD built-in graphics);
an Intel i5 or i7, or AMD A8 processor (quad core is better!); and
At least 4GB of DDR3 RAM;
laptop screen resolution higher than the standard 1366x768, like 1600x900.

Many laptops fit these criteria; your budget and taste will determine which is right for you!
A few examples (links below): Dell XPS , Asus G73 series, Lenovo ThinkPad T520 or Ideapad Y series.

Answer
That ad is just a little bit bullsh!t, a speech to text prog is not going to be that good when trying to record a speaker at the other end of the room with a laptop mic, but , under more realistic circumstances this type of software can work really well. What is a good laptop for students majoring in petroleum engineering?
Hi, I am going to be entering college this year to be studying petroleum engineering. I was wonder what laptop should I buy for school. My budget is about $1700, and I do not care if it is windows or mac.
Thank you

Answer
In the past, you needed Windows to run popular CAD programs. Now, most of the popular softwares run on Mac OS X as well, such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks. I highly recommend Apple for the following reasons:

1. Durability - Its unibody enclosure is machined from a solid block of aluminum. The result is a notebook that is thin and light, looks polished and refined, and feels strong and durable. Also, the inside components are all custom designed by Apple to fit together perfectly, extending the life of the computer.
2. Battery life - seven hour battery (and it actually is seven hours, I know from experience). If you're taking notes all day this is crucial.
3. Innovative features - The little things do matter. Apple is a company that takes these details into account. Consider the MagSafe power connector that breaks cleanly away from the notebook if you trip over the power cord. This kinds of features are everywhere throughout the inside and outside of Apple computers.
4. Performance - equipped with blazing-fast Intel processors, high-performance graphics, and high-speed DDR3 memory. And OS X is custom-made to take advantage of every bit of that technology. You get superior performance for just about everything you do: managing your photos, editing video, even playing graphics-intensive 3D games.
5. Environmentally friendly - Apple is one of the most environmentally friendly computer companies out there. They're energy efficient and use fewer toxic substances like arsenic and mercury. Also, they're made of high quality aluminum and glass -- both very recyclable.
6. Comes with great software - You don't need to get very much extra software because it's all built in. If you do need something, it's easy to access with the Mac App Store.
7. The hardware and software are designed to work together. Think about it. If you buy a PC, it will be running Windows no matter what. Windows wasn't designed to work with a particular computer. OS X was.
8. Built in security.
9. Automatic backup with Time Machine -- you don't know how many times I've accidentally deleted a term paper or a set of notes. Time Machine has saved me.
10. GREAT customer support.

Those are the main reasons why Mac is a great option and an excellent investment. You pay for high quality. You'll have your Mac forever, whereas most PCs will need replacing within two or three years (in my experience with HP and Acer).

The best Apple laptop option for you is:

13-inch Macbook Pro for $1,489 (the original price is $1,599, you save $110 because you've been accepted to college)
2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i7
Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
8GB 1600MHz memory
1TB 5400-rpm hard drive
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Built-in battery (7 hours)

This laptop is top of the line. Very fast i7 processor (with Turbo Boost technology), 8 GB of RAM, and plenty of storage. It's the perfect computer for you.

You can always go into an Apple store for a second opinion. In my experience they're very helpful in pairing you with the right computer for your needs.

I hope this helps!

I'm a college student and am buying a dell because I have a credit card for it. I've never had a dell laptop before, i've always used HP. I was wondering which one do people think is the best for uses such as the internet, typing up papers, music, and basic things? I've heard mixed reviews on the Inspirion.

Answer
FOr surfing the net, writing papers, listening to music, and watching movies.. laptops from 2001 do the job quite nicely.. How can I say such a thing? Because college students from 2001 were doing the same things. So, what does that really mean? It means you can purchase a used laptop if you want.

You can walk into Walmart, and with your credit card, you can purchase the cheapest laptop (Typically an Acer Aspire) for between $450 and $500 and it is going to do all those things you want to do, and it will do them nicely. You could go online to Geeks.com and buy the $300 laptop of your choice (most are dell, btw) http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=NBB and it is going to do all those things you listed.

Neither brand you listed is better for those things. No brand is "best" for those things, since they all do them.

Now, as far as durability goes, I'd avoid HP. I get them in the repair shop where I am the laptop repairman more than any other brand... for hardware repair. They do tend to fall apart more often than any other brand. And I do mean, fall apart.

I need a new laptop but am a bit overwhelmed by all of the options. I don't have a great budget (around $500), and am wondering what a good laptop is for a college student, with a decent processor size and speed, etc. I don't need anything amazing, just something good - for writing papers, getting online, listening to music, watching videos, etc. Any suggestions?

Answer
My advice is to inquire at the particular college. They usually have "minimum requirements - recommendations" to ensure compatibility with their network. I suspect that the basic models, which are far more robust than the machines made a few years ago, will suffice.

best 15 laptop for college

I need the cheapest best quality laptop for college. I have no clue what for look for in computers. What do I need to know before buying???

Answer
A lot of students have mac books but they are so overpriced. Any laptop should do for college unless you plan on playing video games on it. Your main focus should be on battery life, screen size and operating system. Battery life is big if you plan on bringing it to class or doing work in the library (if there are no outlets there). Screen size, this might be just me, but i can't stand looking at computers with a screen size of 15' or lower. And yes i do know you will get better battery life will a small screen so i would get a laptop with a 15.6' screen. Operating system should be windows 7 home, vista is buggy and most of the computers in your college probably have it as well. Stay away from refurbished laptops they may be cheaper but having your laptop dieing on you while your on campus is the worst. I would stick to the main brands: Toshiba, HP, Sony, Samsung, Gateway. Shop around there are a lot of good deals online, you don't just have to go to stores like BestBuy. Newegg.com and Amazon.com usually have some good deals.

One other thing to look at... if you can i would hold off buying a laptop until Microsoft Office 2010 comes out (June) because there will probably be deals involving the purchasing of a laptop and receiving a discount on MS office

what is the typical size laptops that college students bring to class?

Q. i'm starting college august 2011 and i am preparing for it now. i was curious as to what size laptops most college students take to class? i heard its 15" standard,no matter the brand. i am thinking of getting a 12" lenovo thinkpad because my preference is smaller laptops. is that embarrassing? i mean, i dont want to walk into class and everyone has these ginormous laptops and i have a smaller one. thanks in advance.

Answer
Actually, many professors have banned laptops in classes. People who bring them aren't taking notes, they're distracting themselves and others. Get a laptop you'll use in your room, and don't worry about bringing it to class unless you're specifically told to. Just get a pad of paper and a pen to take notes. The only person I ever saw using the laptop to take notes had a netbook, so it was small.

I'm looking around for some laptops that will be good to use in college- one that isn't too heavy, has fast and easy features, a webcam built in to chat with friends and family. Up to $1000 is probably my budget.

Answer
Hey,

I think I can really help you out. I've been making similar decisions lately.

I recommend Lenovo. Why? They have been voted several times as the best PC manufacturer for Windows-based laptops.

The most important thing to decide if is if you want a dedicated graphics card. This will allow you to play games on the computer. If not, you can get something called an Integrated Graphics Card which will still let you browse, watch movies etc. all the normal things.

Laptops great for dedicated graphics:

Lenovo IdeaPad U400 (Very light and stylish design)
Lenovo Y460p (For better performance during games, also a bit heavier)

These laptops have features that make them rock-solid (spill-proof and works after being accidentally dropped):

Lenovo Thinkpad T420

Laptop with integrated graphics:

Lenovo U260

Most have webcams, but you can easily purchase an external webcam if they don't. Plus an external webcam generally has higher video quality.

I am interested in buying a mac computer for university -going into first year in the fall. What mac's are best for university students?

Answer
definitely say the macbook. Its counterpart, the macbook pro would be for tasks that require intense operations, like HD Video editing, or Photo editing. if its just word processing and notes, then there is no need for the top of the range. plus its cheaper. but its all up to you and what your gonna do at uni! :D

What is the amount of memory, hard drive and other specifications would a university student need?

+

I will go to university for longer than 7 years, so I will need a laptop but the problem s that Im unsure of the amount of memory, hard drive and other specifications does my laptop need. I think that 4GB memory and 320 GB would be good for me.

By the way, which laptop do you think is good for a university student?

Answer
It really depends on what you want to do with it. If you're just going to be using a word processor and doing some web browsing, then an entry-level Dell notebook would be fine and save you some cash. If you want ease of use, the last-generation Macbooks are great and stylish.

If you want to play games or do video editing etc, then be prepared to shell out quite a bit more on something with larger specs.

320GB is decent, 500GB is better, 1TB is luxury. 4GB of ram should be more than sufficient for day-to-day work, and will let you have a few apps open at once.

Keep in mind if you use a digital camera or shoot any videos, you can fill that up pretty quick.

I desperately need a new laptop. Mine is a refurbished Dell Latitude D600, and it is falling apart (keys are falling off... the monitor is about to fall off, ect.) I'm about to head into my second year of college and was wondering what would be the best laptop for a college student? I'm open to any suggestions. Mac, Dell, ect.

Answer
My suggestion would be find a replacement on ebay, it will hold you over until you graduate and then you can get a nice, expensive model
I know a company that I purchased a Dell, IBM and HP from in the past year (all work great and were in better than described condition)
the website is
www.stores.ebay.com/it-bysmart

they are really nice to deal with and the computers are an excellent deal.

they have Apples, HPs, and they will work well to get you through school

Best of luck

I am a student who is going to take college courses online. I also enjoy listening to Itunes and playing movies on my computer, and I would need a laptop that is durable for travel overseas if I get deployed.
Which types are the most durable or longest lasting? I had a Dell Inspiron 6000 for 3 years before the motherboard fried and made it unusable. I appreciate your helpful input on these questions.

Answer
I have recently purchased a Dell Studio 1735. I really like it; it has a 17' monitor and a full keyboard & has intel core 2 duo so it's really fast. The only drawback is having to learn Vista. Also, it has a finger reader so I feel that makes it safer for travel.

Good Luck!

How to reinstall OS on a Macbook?

Christophe

Hello,

I got an old Macbook from a friend and want to reinstall the OS and start fresh. I am a Windows/Linux guy, this is my first exposure to iOS. I plan to use the laptop for a college course on iOS application development as well as to learn the OS. This reload is my first step in the understanding of iOS.

I don't have any software or license key, if Mac's come with such. Any tips, suggestions, warnings, precautions, step-by-step procedures would be greatly appreciated.

I have hardware / software tech experience with Windows and programming experience in Linux environments so feel free to use big words lol!

Thanks!

Answer
In order to use a Mac OS compatible to the computer, it would be helpful to know 1) processor & 2) memory. Also is there already a running Mac OS on the computer and if so, what version?

To find the above information, click on the Apple in the upper right corner, choose "About this Mac", a small window opens and there you will find the processor information as well as the amount of memory installed. Also more can be learned by clicking on the "More Info" area within the window, though not necessarily needed to determine which OS, if available, can be installed.

Also a a bit of general information: IOS is the firmware/os used in Mac handheld devices (iPhones, iPads, iTouch, iPod, etc.) OS is the operating system used on a Mac computer.

I want to start saving up for a macbook pro (or whatever the newest version is called at the time) but with big investments like this, I always worry that the product will not be worth it. So are you glad that you purchased the macbook pro? Pros and cons?

Thanks!

Answer
Hello lovely. I'll preface my answer with a disclaimer about my bias for Apple products. Some people have strong preferences for PCs, and some have strong preferences for Macs. I fall in the latter category. I've only owned one PC in my life, and it was an exceptionally dissatisfying experience, but many others have very positive reviews. The HP I had got a hostage ware virus from a fake Facebook video two weeks after it was purchased, overheated to the extent that it would burn my fingertips and shut down, had to be shipped off and mailed back for repairs three times with a turnaround time of about 11 days, had very poor customer support, and the hinges and shell of the laptop broke after one year. Quite literally everything about owning that product was the opposite of what I've had with all my Macs. Of course, people have had PCs that performed flawlessly for years and Macs that were lemons. I'll include some reviews of the Macbook Pro below to give you a more balanced perspective.

I have a 15 inch 2012 MacBook Pro with retina display that performs beautifully and feels like working with a smart piece of art, and a 2010 13 inch MacBook Pro that is still in excellent condition. The only upgrade I've needed to make was replacing the battery last December, which I did myself with an inexpensive generic battery from Amazon. I do love the sublime resolution of the retina display and the magnificently fast performance, but I don't feel like all that is offered on that model is worth the additional cost for a college student. You'd be perfectly fine with the 13 inch MacBook Pro for about a grand less.

Reasons I love my Macs:
~ Anytime I've encountered any issues, from user error to some sort of technical problem, I've been able to make an appointment at the Genius Bar and mosey on over. There's an Apple counter on my campus bookstore, and an Apple store in the mall on our campus, so obviously it's much easier for me to pop into one than it is for many people. If you do not live within reasonable proximity this will not be as much of an asset, though you'd still be able to get assistance online or over the phone.

~ Apple Care is excellent, unlike many other extended warranties. My 13-year-old sister accidentally knocked her MacBook Pro onto a concrete surface, and the Apple store is fixing all the repairs for free.

~ I love the applications it comes preloaded with, like Garageband. I also prefer Apple software like iWork 09 over Microsoft Office 2011.

~ I love the simplicity of the user interface. It feels more intuitive and straight-forward than Windows.

~ I love the reliability and longevity of all the Apple products I've owned. My very first laptop was a blueberry clam shell iBook that I got in elementary school, and both of my little sisters used it when they were small. It still operates more than a decade after it was purchased. I received the 15 inch laptop last fall as a gift. I could have used the 13 inch all throughout college. I still do bring the 13 inch with me to classes sometimes since it's smaller. My secondary school issued MacBook Pros as part of tuition in lieu of physical textbooks, and most of the laptops survived for years.

~ I love how my Apple products play well with one another. I go to one of the most Mac-centric campuses in the country, and we have our own IOS app that the majority of the campus uses. I love how all my devices sync with one another. I use Apple TV instead of paying a monthly cable bill at school, and all I have to do is go to Hulu, or BBC or whatever, launch what I want to watch and hit the Airplay button to send it to my TV. I can also Airplay from my iPad and iPhone to other devices.

~ I love that even though Macs can get viruses, they are far less prone to having them, and I've never gotten on after using Mac products since the age of seven.

I'd rate my MacBook Pro satisfaction level at 91 out of 100. I do occasionally have minor frustrations with it, and it is more expensive than a lot of PCs.

TIPS:

~ Before purchasing any Apple products, check this site: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/
It will give you a reasonable estimate as to when the next model upgrade is due. It's currently advising against buying the MacBook Pro right now because upgrades are anticipated in the near future.
~ Apple has some fantastic back-to-school specials for students that usually begin around mid to late July and extend through mid September. I'd buy a product then. You usually get anywhere from $50 to $200 off computers, plus a freebie. In 2010 when we bought the 13 inch Macbook Pro we got $100 off, plus a free iPod Touch that retailed for $200. Last year my dad (who obviously isn't a student) was given the student discount when he mentioned to the employee that he was buying the laptop for me. He got $200 off, plus a $100 iTunes gift card.

~ skylark : )

Should I purchase a new or refurbished MacBook?

John

This coming fall I will be going to college and I need a computer. I really want a Mac book because I think they are great quality and will last me for atleast 4 years for school. What I don't know is if I should buy the 2012 rMBP 15 inch for $1600 refurbished from apple. Or I could buy the 2013 rMBP 15 for $2199 both totals are before tax. What I don't know is if it is really worth the money to pay retail. But then Again it is brand new condition unlike the refurbished 2012. Please give me your opinion and why. Thanks for your help

Answer
The only reason why they last 4 years is that people pay so much for them, they spend the money to repair them. I highly suggest you buy an accidental damage policy. MacBooks seem to be more susceptible to liquid spill damage and dropping damage, especially because of their thin profile.
Squaretrade 2009 study was the last comprehensive one. Apple MacBooks are industry average after two years as the warranty is expired.
http://www.squaretrade.com/laptop-reliability-1109/
1st year reliability doesn't count much. It saves Apple money.

Thinkpad T and X series are reliable and cheaper, and any laptop with an added 3 year warranty including accidental damage will be working for 3 years. MacBook CPU/RAM/Graphics performance is terrible for the price.
Here's the real specs
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pro

After about 3 years, a Macbook is considered slow as molasses. If you buy a decent Windows laptop, you can replace it every other year cheaper than holding a dinosaur as a 4 year pet.

Pick either. If not getting a 3 year warranty with accidental damage that Apple specifically excludes from coverage, the 1 yea

I am a non-art major student. I am looking for a cheap (under 500$) tablet with handwriting recognition. I do not want to have to be connected to a laptop in order to use it. I just want a tablet with a stylus that I can write on. I have heard good things about Wacom however it seems that those are just for drawing and photoshop, or they have to be connected to a laptop to use. Help? Suggestions?

2011 Sony Vaio Z or Newest MacBook Air?

I am lucky enough to have a job where my employer is going to buy me a new laptop to use for both work and school. I'm a university student, but I also work in a law firm so I want something that I can bring with me to campus as well as work, without it being a burden like my 15" Dell currently is. I would only be using it for taking notes, writing papers, emailing, listening to music, watching videos, and surfing the web. I do NOT play computer games, so the external Power Media Dock that comes with the Vaio which has an optical drive and 1gb GPU isn't absolutely necessary, but it does look pretty bad ass. I would want a 13" laptop that is very thin and light, but I would also like it to be powerful. Both of these models seem to fit my criteria, but I am having extreme difficulty in choosing one. The only issues at stake here I suppose would be the price and the operating system. Price does not matter to me, I am allowed to spend up to $ 2,000... But for that I can only get the base model Vaio, whereas I can get the highest model Mac, and even tack on a mouse, printer, and some other accessories. I really like the look of both of them, so I could care less which one i get in that respect. As well, both are almost identical in weight and thickness (Vaio is slightly better in both, if you compare the average thickness of the Air because it's thinnest at the front and thickest at the back) The only thing is, I have been a PC user all of my life and have less than 5 minutes experience using a Mac. I've been shopping for almost a month and wouldn't even consider a Mac at the start, and now I am. I just think it would be nice to not have to worry about viruses and malware ruining my computer after only having it for a year, because that's happened to me with every computer i've owned so far. But I just don't know if I can make the switch to a Mac. Someone help me out!!
Thanks for the balanced answers everyone. I should have clarified a few things, however. I'm a political science major, so I really don't need any intensive software other than Microsoft Office, and it is my understanding that you can get it for Mac as well.

I also should disclose the performance specs for the specific models I would be getting, though the differences are quite small:

Vaio Z: $2049
Intel; Core; i5-2410M processor (2.30GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 2.90GHz
Premium Carbon Fibre
4GB (2GB x2 fixed onboard) DDR3-SDRAM-1333
128GB (64GBx2) Solid State Drive with RAID 0 Technology

Power Media Dock⢠with AMD Radeon⢠HD 6650M (1GB) graphics and CD/DVD player /burner
*There is currently a $100 coupon on the sony online store, so i could get either and additional 2 gb of ram, upgrade to a blu-ray drive, or get the full1080p dispay.

MacBook Air: $1639
1.8GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7
4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
256GB flash storage

So, for the extra $

Answer
I was PC user all my life but shifted to MAC last year with macbook pro. And now I just bought an
11" macbook air with i7 and 256 GB as my only computer, the day it launched. I am an engineer and now also studying software programming. This little champ can perform any task you throw at it. I understand what sort of portability you want so I even recommend you to go for 11".

Did I mentioned that I have Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and MAC OS X LION both running smoothly on my 11" Macbook Air, also with MS OFFICE, iWork and lots of other softwares.

So for $2000, you can buy a macbook air + optical drive + Windows 7 OEM Copy + softwares + accessories ++++ and can enjoy both Mac and PC together.

MacBook pro 2011 v.s a iMac desktop?

Jessica

Hi. I am having a difficulty time deciding which apple computer should I get for the summer. I like the MacBook pro for its portability. I am a university student who currently own a MacBook 2008 version but is looking for more external hard drive space to download movies, applications, and get good hd graphics. The application i want to download is Final Cut Pro, Adobe photoshop, after effects, motions, and other media applications. I will be using the computer to edit my film projects for school (heavily) and personal stuff. I am planning to get an iMac or a MacBook pro. The down side with an iMac is that I need it to be portable. I really like both. Since I own a MacBook laptop already should get a MacBook or a iMac. So what do u guys think. Please help me decide. Thanks.

Answer
For video editing I personally like the top spec 15" macbook pro although if you already have a macbook then maybe the iMac makes more sense.

Before you buy Final Cut Pro, Apple are releasing new video editing software called Final Cut Pro X (ten) in June at a fraction of the price ($299) of the old Final Cut Pro.
