I'm turning 15 years old, so my laptop would mostly be used for school work.
I spend most of my time on myspace, and have a site on there, which means, I need something to store a lot of memory, and for me to work easily with HTML.
I also need a webcam, because I want to get a Stickam account.

I was interested in a Mac, but I can't afford it.
I'm trying not to go over $800.00
My second chice was an HP.
Any ideas?

Answer
Go easy on the warranty and look for the best deal for about 599 to 699 and spend the rest on good software through your local community college or your school - you are a student so you can get the student pricing for Office or you can save the money and use Open Office plus your necessary website development tools. Consider the Microsoft Partner membership where you get all the commercially available business software four times per year and it is good for several PCs, and just 300.00 US per year for the subscription. Most PCs at retail stores will have an operating system but not much else, and the best pricing at pricewatch and Auctionfire.com and eBay - new PCs - may be for a bare computer with no software at all.

Can you help this computer illiterate buy a computer?

pigglet_pr

Ok. Here we go. I am buying a computer for college. I will use it to type papers, browse the internet, stream videos, and itunes. I have narrowed it down to these two...

http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-ENVY/E4T18AV?HP-ENVY-TouchSmart-15t-j000-Quad-Edition-Notebook-PC

http://shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-ENVY/C9G48AV?HP-ENVY-TouchSmart-15t-j000-Select-Edition-Notebook-PC

I am worried because I have not found any professional reviews (cnet or pcmag) and the select version does not have any customer reviews either (both computers came out this summer). I get the student discount which makes the quad $795 and the select $669.

I was just going to buy the quad, but after doing some research, I am not sure I need all of the power it has. The biggest difference I can see between the processor (i7 or i5). I have an i3 now, so I am sure either would be faster.

I am also worried about the difference in graphics (4600 vs 4000). Is it a big difference? I want the videos I watch to be pretty good, but I probably don't need top of the line (I'm assuming).
So basically I am asking if the extras on the quad would even be used with what I am doing on a computer.

I would prefer cheaper, but if it is worth it to pay the extra money, I will pay for it.

(I am upgrading to a full HD screen)

Answer
Most professors hate cell and smart phones, don't care for computers in a classroom, have little reference to video outside of those shown in class and have little space/time requirements for units on desks and time to set them up. Most classes are eighty minutes and it's hard to get that kind of battery performance without being plugged into the wall, and think if you have two to four classes per day what the ramifications are. Colleges provide computers in their libraries and computer labs to assist in completing homework. They are slow to upgrade browsers and major software. There is little need for a laptop at all. A home PC is where to put your money and you will need Microsoft Office 2010 and above. It will suffice for dorm or home. The college bookstores and Microsoft offer the academic software at a significantly reduced price, but only if you are enrolled in a class requiring it, like Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Publisher. Microsoft polices their products-diligently. An inexpensive laptop with 3G RAM and Windows 7 is the best investment. One good drop can send a laptop to the junk pile; don't go for a high end machine that can go south just as easy, when a cheaper unit will do all the necessary things for you and it is not as likely to be stolen. Hardware will be more economical and available for any necessary replacements as you go down the road. It is unlikely institutions will go for another operating system for several years and most of them just recently switched to Office 2010-I doubt there will be any changes from now, until when you get a Bachelors Degree in about 2016. The key to college is between your ears and requires ten hours of homework, weekly, for each class attended and is mostly about sticking your nose in the book. It would be best to invest in a digital recorder with Dragon capability dictation quality and record all of your classes. It can be discreet if needed, easy to use, cheap to operate and/or replace and help with your note taking, especially when the lights are out during a class video. It allows you to attend the class multiple times, doesn't forget anything, can be kept on all digital storage devices and emailed to any classmates unable to attend, or that cannot afford a recording unit. Sony wrote the book on dictation/Dragon capable digital recorders. Several hundred hours can be accumulated on the recorder in multiple folders or downloaded after each use. Your book bag will be plenty heavy and the laptop will be even more to carry, whether it is shouldered or in a rolling case, and become quite a burden. Left in a vehicle to extremes of cold and heat, as well as risk of theft, can be detrimental to a laptop. Wi-Fi sites are famous for hackers to mess with your life by chasing laptop compromises and glitches. Spend some more good money getting good anti-virus software-contracts on the units with IYOGI would do you well each year you are in school, on the home PC and a laptop for sustained and high quality use. I still go to college for five years straight, now, and will finish my current degree this December, 2013. I, also, work in the Science Dept. for all of the Biology, Microbiology, Physiology, Chemistry and Physics professors and take care of all the labs and environmental cabinets. All of the students I witness in these and my computer labs, I am a Computer Science major in programming skills, do not use laptops in classes, nor do I see them being carried. Geek guys like me have one, but with wireless keyboards and conventional mouse. The laptop has a compromised keyboard arrangement and the wireless is just like all others-eliminating having to learn two different patterns. A laptop keyboard wears out in about a year and is a pain to change. I can spend thirty bucks and get a new wireless keyboard and mouse quickly, leaving my laptop looking like new and less likely to have problems like dead keys and such. Don't pre-suppose the laptop issue. They are inherently slow, no matter how much RAM they have, and are very short lived. You will need competent Word skills immediately in all of your classes-go there get that right now! Take this class first and get the software and take little else as you do, preferably math or other computer class, like PowerPoint, or Excel. Note: pick a good minor that will employ you anywhere at a decent wage entry level, like Accounting, Office management courses, and management or Economics. This way you can work as you need and it will let you look for the big job when you're done, instead of low or zero pay internment. Lots to know before you go. Luck!

I'm going to be going into computer-aided drafting and design at the college I'm going to be attending. I would like a laptop that has a lot of memory, windows vista, and I want one with a CD and DVD burner.

Answer
Don't get anything less than:

2048mb ram
Core 2 Duo (t5200 model and up)
Vista Premium
WOULD BE GREAT IF IT HAD A VIDEO CARD
Would be okay if it came with Webcam and Mic also

Go to Best Buy and show them the specs i gave you and if they have one for under 1000 then get it.

DONT GET:

vista basic
< 2 gig of memory
celeron or p4 or AMD = heat and bad battery life

I like gateways because they give alot of performance for price but HP gives alot of features but tend to throw AMDs in the pcs and you can't touch the outside or you leave finger prints everywhere. Also Acers come and go with good deals. Sony and Toshiba don't seem to have anything i like.

Is a Macbook Pro 13in good for music production?

Terrance

I am a college bound high school senior, and I need a laptop capable of music production as well as academic assignments. The amount of memory, RAM, interface, MIDI controller, and music software alone are getting to be expensive . So I was trying to find a good reliable investment that will last for years to come.

Answer
That's a great computer for music production, and it should last a while.

It's worth the extra investment of getting a Mac, because they tend to last longer, retain resale value, and the best audio software is only available on mac. New Macs each come with a huge library of royalty free sound clips and loops and Garageband for free.

If you want to save a whole lot of money, consider getting a used desktop, like an eMac or iMac. I know someone who got 1.42 GHz eMac for less than $200. I helped him setup Logic Studio on that computer, and he now records his own music on it.

Can you download Microsoft Word Home & Student 2010 if your computer doesn't have a Cd drive?

Bri5780

I'm planning on purchasing a Toshiba Laptop but it doesn't have a cd drive in it which I'm fine with, since I don't download videos onto there but can are there any other ways I can download the pc "Microsoft WordHome & Student 2010" onto the laptop?

Answer
The download for this product is in the form of a DVD image file.
You would need to cut this to a DVD and then run the DVD to install.
You might get lucky using a program like ISOBUSTER to gain access to the files in the image file to do your install.
Otherwise, I would recommend borrowing a friend's USB DVD drive.

I'm going back to school and will commute to the campus two days a week. I will spend the entire day at the campus once I get there and will not have easy access to my car. I need to carry everything (including Mac Laptop) in my backpack or bag. Any suggestions?

Answer
Don't bring your books to class unless the professor actually requires you to do so. This is pretty unlikely though. I think out of my 4 years of college, only 1 or 2 professors made us bring in the books.

You might also want to see how it goes with bringing your laptop. Many students get sick of bringing them to class. Plus, some professors even have rules against using them during class time. I never had a strong need to use one during class. Printed notes and pens worked fine for me. Plus, without a laptop, you won't have to worry about it getting stolen, running out of batteries, finding a plug, etc.

But, if you are set on bringing your laptop, look for a padded bag that you can carry on your back. I also like bags with several inside pockets to carry things like pens, makeup, keys, cell phones, wallets, etc. That way you don't have to carry an additional purse.

What type of backpacks do grad students carry?

Miss Olivi

I have an awesome backpack that I've had for 10 years but it's bright pink. What types of bags do grad students usually carry? I don't really care for laptop bags or messengers bags. I'd prefer a backpack, but want to look professional as well.

Answer
Grad students carry whatever works for them, and that frequently involves keeping things that maybe they wouldn't buy now but that don't really need to be replaced, because many grad students are trying not to spend too much money. Keep the pink backpack. If, at some point down the road, you decide that you'd rather not be carrying a bright pink backpack, you can replace it with exactly what you'd rather carry instead of what you think now you might want to carry at some point in the future. Otherwise, save your money so that when you get started on your job search you can buy a new backpack that looks professional and is likely to last you awhile.

Answer
A dell inspiron would be great for school. If you get my recommended specifications, you can have it with maximum performance (didn't mean to sound snobby, sorry).

Get an Intel core 2 duo with at least 2.3 ghz

Windows Vista Home Basic

3 GB of memmory

250 gb or higher hard drive

Intel Intergrated Graphics

CD / DVD Writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)

Dell Wireless 1395 802.11g Mini-Card

9 cell Battery (optional but suggested)

a regular usb optical mouse (does not matter if it is wireless or not. I prefer wired because you don't have to mess with batteries)

Microsoft® Office Home and Student 2007

You can also change the pattern on the back of the laptop but it does not do anything to performance (but your friends will worship you for such and awesome looking laptop).

I want to buy a new gaming laptop for collage.I have this year an 1+ from high school and I am going to go in 2011-2012 in collage. I want a top gaming laptop of 3500-5500$
Will there be a new CPU, Graphic card, Ram that will be much faster then ?

Answer
This is sort of a pointless question.

Of course there will be new CPU's, new GPU's, faster and higher capacity RAM and hard drives. They are in a constant state of change, and new additions to each of those categories come out at least once a year, so you're looking at at least 2 generations better than what we have now.

But you might want to rethink your strategy, as a super powerful gaming laptop is not very portable and it's battery life will suck. And as a college student myself, you are going to want a laptop that you can take where ever you need, easily (both weight and size) and something that wont die in an hour. Come back to Yahoo Answers when you are ready to buy a gaming laptop, as any advice as to parts is pure speculation and will lead you astray.

My budget is from 500-750 USD. I am NOT going to use it for gaming. Primary use is watching movies, using a couple of softwares, facebook, youtube, music etc... I have had a dell laptop for 2 years. Next year I will be going to college for at least 6 years. I was thinking of getting a macbook pro, but wasn't sure if I should get one.

Answer
Hi,

I see some of the others here are trying to mislead you when it comes to choosing a Mac. You get what you pay for, and with Macs you get a lot more. A totally integrated user experience, fantastic build quality, long life, good performance, excellent trouble-free software, and a machine you can be proud of. Most users who buy Mac never go back to a PC.

The last thing you want to be doing while going to college is spending time on virus updates, upgrading and maintaing the machine, and fighting with settings and drivers. Although the Mac may seem a little unfamiliar at first after years using a PC, you soon learn to appreciate its simplicity and elegance -- it's well worth the effort.

There's a good reason that the MacBook is the machine of choice for most students these days, and if you do go for a MacBook, you will find many kindred spirits at college.

You don't necessarily need to go for a high-end MacBook -- the MacBook Air makes a perfect compromise between small size, low cost and excellent quality. If you want to go with a laptop that will last you for your time at college, then invest in a MacBook Pro Retina display -- they are available in 13 or 15 versions, and are probably the best laptops that money can buy.

One final tip: you can get great student discounts on Macs and Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, which you will need for your studies.

Good luck!

Answer
don't do a dell they have bad customer service and quite a few of their 15's have fan issues after a few months (I replaced 3 fans before my dell died this last march, right before all my essays were being written) You're better off with a sony or toshiba (my friend has a toshiba and hasn't had an issue yet) plus they have better battery life then dell (by a mile, my 1525 got maybe 1 hour of battery off the cord) or if possible save up for a mac (you most likely could get by on library pc's till your able to afford a macbook at starting price of $999, I had too ;) ) It's worth it believe me!

How is the Dell Studio 15 laptop for a college student?

Ty

I am looking at laptops for college and have come across the Dell Studio 15 which looks pretty good. Does anyone know if this is a good laptop for college students? I will be a business major who is also obtaining prerequisites for medical school if that helps.

Answer
ok heres the breakdown:

Macs vs. PC's

You'll definately want a PC no doubt because Macs cause all sorts of problems with compatability (the last thing you'll ever want to encounter when handing in your thesis that was written on your Mac and deemed unreadable by your professor's PC). Macs are easier to use but are also just that much more uselessly expensive. You can get a PC for 1/3 of the price that apple offers at the same level of performance.

I own the studio 15 laptop. One major drawback is that its fan is quite noisy. Its not loud enough for anybody to hear it in the library, but its enough to possibly bug you if youre alone in your dorm room and are the sort of person who has pet peeves like that. However, its performance is excellent, and its design is also interesting. It is a rather heavy laptop, especially when the 9 cell battery is in place. As far as college goes, this baby is more than capable of handling your needs with or without upgrading, although i would highly recommend upgrading the hard drive, memory, and processor if you plan on doing more than email, word processing, internet, and music.

One thing i would recommend is to make SURE you buy the accidental warranty plan. It may be because i have been a bit too careless with my laptop, but the studio 15 is a rather fragile laptop. the body on it has been notorious for falling off (the screen, although this is rather uncommon) and the buttons on the side may malfunction. Overall, it will last, but I would rather be on the safe side than have a broken laptop the night before your presentation... mine is in the shop right now, and good thing for that warranty or else i would have to cough up like 500 bucks and its not even major damage.

please consider other brands, ESPECIALLY lenovo idea/thinkpads and sony vaios. i would buy them over the studio 15 because of the drawbacks and the customer service at dell (mine got delayed shipping for about 7 weeks) but it is not a bad laptop at all.

***EDIT*** in response to the mac user above: however long the computer lasts depends entirely on the user. MACS DO GET VIRUSES! they are simply less common because the vast majority (95%) of consumers on the market are all using windows NOT the joke of an operating system tiger/leopard/cheetah/lion/grizzly bear/puma/ or w/e wild animal you wanna throw in there. the aluminum case has been known to get dented easily, eventually leading to hardware failure. i am not familiar with mac support as users are usually much more careful with them because of their pricey nature, but i assume it cannot be worse than dell's. think of it this way though; if you dont break your laptop, you wont need customer service or warranty for the matter of fact. you're choice

If you have certain classes that require a certain type of computer then you need to think about that like if you are taking photo or architecture classes.

Otherwise I would say you need one with a sturdy casing. You need one that has decent batter life. Wireless of course. I would get one with an HDMI port so you can stream movies or TV shows and project it on your TV if you want. You will want a webcam and mic for skyping.

You are going to need a decent processor core not amd and for sure you need Microsoft student for the word processor and power point.

Answer
My advice is to inquire at the particular college. They usually have "minimum requirements - recommendations" to ensure compatibility with their network. I suspect that the basic models, which are far more robust than the machines made a few years ago, will suffice.

I am soon going to be entering into a community college for my associate degree in computer programming, and i was wondering if I will need my own laptop for the papers and assignments etc. I won't be staying at the college I will be living at home. We do have a couple of laptops at home but both of them have problems (one doesn't connect to wifi and the other always have to be plugged in otherwise it will die), so that makes them immobile. Please help guys I am really confused as to should i buy a laptop or not. I don't want to come to college unprepared.

Serious answerers only, Thanks!

Answer
The rules vary by school and class, but most professors insist that laptops be shut and cell phones turned off while in class. However, there is time between classes, and often a laptop comes in handy to do some of the required homework and assignments during the day. Also, some work is done in libraries and having your own laptop is a big aid.
There are some private schools that actually give all students a laptop. That is to assure everyone has one and uniformity in connections to get and provide information for registration, etc.

A laptop is now considered an essential tool, just as a book and pen and paper are tools.
It doesn't need to be fancy, and portability (smaller) is a plus.

If you have a laptop not connecting to wifi you can buy a USB wireless adapter for about $15 at Newegg, Amazon, Tigerdirect, Best Buy, Radio Shack, or other stores.

If the battery is worn on a laptop, you can buy a replacement battery.

With a degree and studies being in computer programming, though the classes may have desktop PCs in them, it is possible they will require you have a laptop.

Used and new laptops can be bought for under $300, though about $400 buys a lot more in performance, features, and reliability. For now, call it HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, but later you may find it is required by your school. You can often call ahead and ask them, but they should be telling you soon enough. There are often back to school sales, and clearances are already occuring for the switch in Intel level cpus. May check a local Best Buy for their clearance items.

Hi. I need a lock for keeping my laptop safe at college this fall. I've never used one before, and I've started to research them but I need a little help. My laptop has a spot for a lock with an icon that is a closed lock with a "K" on it. I've determined that K is for Kensington, so is that the only brand I can use? Also, any suggestions on where to find a decent one for maybe $20? Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer
Targus DEFCON® KL Laptop Computer Key Lock is a fairly sturdy lock

Info on it here http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.aspx?sku=PA450U

How often does Apple offer rebates?

Jellybean

I just missed the student deal with the mac + free iPod in my country.

Now I need a new laptop.. so does anyone know how often the Apple site offers deals/rebates?

Answer
Why do you need a Mac? it is no different from a Dell Hp, or any other intel laptop. the thing that makes a mac is the OS/x operating system not the hardware, Next you will be running windows on it, 95% of mac users do because they can't use anything but windows anyway.

If you buy a Mac your are stuck with Mac proprietary hardware and software users license meaning you can't do what you want, you have to do what mac will allow and tell you to do with your own computer,

When it comes to Proprietary Hardware you are at the mercy of the manufacture (MAC) you have to buy their Hardware and accessories , You have to buy their software, You have to have it repaired with Mac or one of their agents, this keeps the price of everything sky high for the Mac consumers.

If you still want a mac they will be selling their system cheaper next month Now that Linux systems are coming out with Google Linux Andriod and Moblin operating systems Mac now know that to compete they will have to drop their prices, Both Apple Mac and Microsoft know by the end of this year Linux is going to hit them hard. both in the computer and phone market

Why you may ask, simple Linux Operating System and Software is Free Linux puts OS/x and windows to shame You need to do some serious research before you go out and spend a fortune on a mac

Why is my 15 inch 2012 Macbook Pro abruptly shutting down when I launch iPhoto, and what can I do about it?

Fortunately it's operating splendidly on all other applications, but this is still a nuisance. I'd just launched iPhoto and all was well at first, and then my laptop abruptly shut down. A gray screen appeared with a notice that my laptop had shut down because of a problem. It did automatically reboot and I clicked the button to report the problem. On the info screen along with the report it confirmed that iPhoto was the reason the laptop shut down. After it rebooted it worked normally. I'm a college student finalizing all my papers for the quarter, so I tend to mildly freak out when my laptop spazzes even though I do regularly save everything and back it up to Time Capsule.

I do have thousands of pictures in iPhoto - about 70GB worth in total on this laptop, but I still have plenty of space. Could it be crashing due to the size? What can I do to resolve the issue besides removing some of the photos?

Bonus Question ~ What's your favorite app? : )
If you're a Mac hater, that's perfectly fine, but please just skip the question instead of venting about Macs as some here are wont to do.
I am going to try to take my laptop to the Apple store over the weekend if I can't resolve the problem myself. It's currently 2:12 in the morning, so the tech support offices are not open. The beauty of Y!A is it's running 24-7.

Answer
I think Apple will be the most help for this. Call them.
But you can try this every now and then to just keep your Mac running as best as possible:
Restart your Mac.
As it starts up again, hold down COMMAND+OPTION+P+R (do it quick) and HOLD until you hear your mac start up again and chime, usually it will go to full brightness as well. It helps keep your mac fast!

My favourite app is a game GTA San Andreas its EPIC!

Silver fox

I am looking into buying a laptop for student use, and my parents are wondering how a person can hack into a laptop. It seems that all of what my family and I know is by watching computer techies on CSI, but that's all made up of course.

Can someone help me dispell the myths of the geeky tech world?

Answer
Hacking is not a myth.

For one, you should turn off Remote Assistance on your PC.

Always keep anti-virus updated and running

Don't open unknown emails and click on links in them even if u do open them

Keep a password on your PC when logging in. Log out each time you walk away from the PC.

Don't download from unknown sources and using cracked keys to download software you know you should pay for.

Downloading free movies and music is an invite into your PC

What do you think would improve schools most?Would it be an outdoor lunch area, new sports equiptment,Laptops?

Q. I am just curious about what others think would improve the school. Do you think an outdoor lunch area, new sports equiptment, or laptops for students to check out would improve schools? What are three reasons for your answer?

Answer
I think laptops would be the best improvement to the school, because...

1. They would add to the children's amount of learning.

2. They would teach them responsibility.

3. They would be a fun way to find out information.

Hope This Helps!

What should I get, a Mac Pro 13" or a Sony Vaio CW?

best laptop for economics student image

Hi, I am an economics and mathematics student, I haven't made up my mind about a laptop, but I have narrowed my options to the Mac Pro with 4GB Ram and 2.26GHz, and the vaio CW with an Intel Core i7 processor and 4GB in Ram. Every advice is welcomed. Thanks

Answer
You'll find that Macs are more reliable. Isn't your time valuable to you?
There is nothing more frustrating than waiting for updates to download or having some other program on a windows machine tell you to wait because it has to do this thing first. Sometimes that can take hours. And forget about letting others on to your PC. You'll be trying to figure out what they did to make your PC so slowwwww! Don't forget when you buy a PC you have to buy an antivirus program, a spyware program and a registry cleaner or maybe even a program that tweaks your system.
With a Mac there are so many applications that are free including free office suites, free photo editing programs and more. You may never have to buy a program.
Before I forget, the Mac is more stable than a Windows machine. When a program crashes on a Mac, only the program crashes not the whole computer. No reboot required.

How are interactive clicker devices changing education in the United States?

Kevin7

Answer
Interactive clickers becoming more popular in K-12 schools Apr 2, 2009

The blue plastic clickers with oval buttons that sit on the edge of students' desks at Gililland Middle School are handheld devices to click in their answers for quizzes and tests. Within minutes, images projected onto a Smart Board let students compare their anonymous results to their classmates. A bar graph shows how the class did overall and how it did on specific questions.

"Was Number 9 a hard one?" seventh-grade language-arts teacher Jane Nesdill asked after a 10-question vocabulary quiz on Wednesday. The question dealt with the word, "pseudonym."

Afterward, Nesdill played an iTunes file that further explained the meaning of the word and used contemporary examples of celebrities, like Reginald Kenneth Dwight and Norma Jeane Baker, who are better known by their show-business names, Elton John and Marilyn Monroe.

"It gave me a new way to present information in a fun and more-engaging way," said Nesdill, a teacher since 1973.

The clicker is part of the Smart Interactive Response System, a new addition to Gililland this year. The system offers immediate feedback for students and teachers, who are able to see what lessons are working and which students need extra help. Nesdill uses it to tweak tests and lesson plans.

"I can focus on learning and where the kids need it," she said. "The kids like it. They are very proud when they can see they got 100 percent."
http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2010/02/05/20100205tr-clicker0206.html

An honors student at Ohio State, a kid in a fifth-grade science class in Kentucky and a deaf student in England all begin their learning experience the same way: with their hand wrapped around a remote control that connects a student with everyone else in the class, with the instructor and with the subject at hand.

Hundreds of colleges, high schools and even middle schools are using "clickers" -- as even manufacturers call them. A moderator can pose a question and within seconds the respondents' answers are anonymously logged on a laptop at the front of the room.

"This is the MTV era," said Neal H. Hooker, an Ohio State professor who uses the technology in his agricultural economics course. "It's the instant-gratification generation. They don't like doing a quiz and hearing the responses in three days. They want to see if they've got it right or wrong right then." InterWrite, a clicker manufacturer in Columbia, Maryland, has over a half million remotes in use, most in classrooms. Software logs the students' answers, enabling the teacher to determine if students understand the topic as the topic is being discussed. Teachers can post a true-false or multiple-choice quiz at the front of the room and, within seconds, the students' responses are logged, their scores tabulated and a grade is assigned to each.

Teachers can readily determine which students need immediate help -- and in what areas -- as the class progresses. The system actually encourages more class discussion, prodding even shy students to get involved as responses are debated. Hooker said the new technology saves reams of paper that he used to use on quizzes. About the only paperwork now is individual grade sheets.

College bookstores sell the clickers for between $10 and $40 apiece to students, depending on a range of functions. Most schools provide a basic system, including a receiver and software, which runs around $1,500. Bigger systems with higher-end equipment can cost $25,000, according to Rick Baker, CEO of clicker maker Meridia Audience http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2005/07/68086
