I'm going to school for architecture in September, and I need a laptop that will work for whatever computer programs I'll need to be using. What's the cheapest I can go that'll still satisfy the architectural programs I'll need?

Answer
I think hp computers are great, and if you have a student email, you can get a really good discount by signing up for an account.

I would start with the dv6t (non student $650, student $586 starting price)
http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=High+performance&series_name=dv6t_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/High_performance/dv6t_series
and then you customize...
the processor it comes with should be fine.
at least 4 gb memory will be good... right now they are offering a free update to 4 gb, so select that.
it comes with a 250 gb, which will be fine for your first two years or so, as long as you don't fill it up with music and photos, but you can upgrade to 500 gb for only $30 so it might be worth doing bc a 250 gb external will cost you more than that.
the graphics card is entirely a matter of budget, a better one will help if you are planning on using 3d model building programs (you will) but upgrading will cost $100 and its not essential.
all the other specs are fine the way they are. microsoft office home and student is a must, but its $100 and you should be able to find someone to give it to you illegally... shhh.

so basically off the standard, the only things i upgraded were the 4gb ram (free upgrade) and 500 gb hard drive (not essential if you have an external) and the total is $614 for a pretty good laptop.

you can not get a crappy laptop for architecture, it will be useless, the programs we use are huge.

If you have more than $650, I would jump up to the dv7t.

If you don't want an hp, keep these rules in mind:
budget determines the processor, its usually pretty expensive to upgrade.
4 gb of ram will be good
and a better graphics card will help you run 3d modeling programs but isn't essential.
i would get at least a 250 gb hard drive.
wide screens are the norm.

it was a little rambling, but i hope it helps!
I'm a fourth year and I just bought myself a desktop, so I had to learn all this stuff and this is what I learned from my various computer nerd friends and websites.

How to prevent my college from tracking my laptop and while torrenting?

john

My college has blocked all sites inlcluding facebook, youtube, twitter, and a lot of other sites including all torrent sites.
Their internet connection has crazy speed and i want to make use of it by torrenting some movies and softwares. How can i torrent files without them finding out who i am or tracing my laptop? Before i can access the internet in the campus, i have to go through a student login page where i have to sign in using my Register number and my password. Furthermore, they took down my laptop's MAC address while configuring it so that i can connect to their network. What can i do??
Please help me out by giving me step by step instructions!!

Thank you sooo much!!! Much appreciated :) :)
First of all let me state that by means of this, I am not encouraging Piracy or any other illegal acts which may cause loss to any corporation or company. ISPs need to understand the fact that Torrents are not illegal, Its just used for illegal purposes and that is what needs to be blocked instead of the whole Torrenting stream. Its the same as harmless Softwares can be used for spreading Malwares.. This doesnât mean we will shut down manufacture of Softwares or Software companies.
Torrents are the easiest and safest (safest in the sense, Reduce corrupt downloads) to transfer huge downloads which may get corrupted while downloading on HTTP downloaders like Internet Download Manager or DownThemAll for many reasons like Connection Timeout,Power Fails,Internet issues etc.
Even many legit downloads like Open Office are offered via Torrents to ensure proper downloads.

Answer
You will not be torrenting "some movies and software" you will be stealing them. Stealing is a crime. To avoid themselves becoming embroiled in your criminal activities the college has blocked such access. Every thing you do on their network will be logged and can be traced back to your account and your laptop via the MAC address. There is nothing you can do about that. If you want the movies and softwares you will have to go to a store and buy them.
