Lightweight laptop for college student?

sava

Have any suggestions for a good priced lightweight laptop?

Answer
A dell XPS or a Thinkpad T series could be really nice. If you don't mind a very small screen an Thinkpad X61 would be really light and awesome.

Best laptop for student/lightweight/doesn't overheat/good battery life?

Delia

I'm going to best buy now, what should i buy? what brand?
uses: ms word, email, internet, some video

Answer
Hi

Get a Compaq or Acer for your money. They come fully loaded and are very reliable. For a student , I suggest the Compaq because it is very sturdy. Also, it doesn;t need any CD or software or windows since the recovery system is on a D-partition.

So if anything ever happens, you just reboot and hit F12 and bingo, the computer will fix itself and give you back your windows without losing any old data whatsoever. Very useful at times ;-)

I am a 19 year old male who still hasn't made his mind up of what he wants to do with his life. So I would appreciate any advice on helping me through this time. Throughout my life, I have always flip-flopped on what career path I want to follow. I went through the typical childhood fantasies of wanting to be cop/firefighter/etc., however as I got older I still wasn't able to figure out what fits me best. For the longest time, I have wanted to be an Architect, but realized recently that what I thought a typical architect did was different then what they actually do. My current thought process is to become an accountant. I have always been good at numbers and took college level calculus in High School. I also have dreams of owning my own company one day and being an accountant would certainly help. I am just not sure that is what I really want to do. I'm not sure if my uneasiness about becoming an accountant is because I really am worried about it or just scared of making the wrong choice. I currently working at the local Walmart working for minimum wage, hoping to go back to college next year. I went to the local tech school right out of high school, but had to take online classes and because I couldn't get myself motivated I soon failed out after two semesters. That is when I got my first/current job. I believe I am ready after 6 months to go back to college, but I just don't know what I want to do with my life. When I am not working, I can often be found in two places, in front of my laptop playing games (mostly mmorpgs in molds of empire building and the such) or in front of the TV playing the Ps3(current obsession is football). I'm just wondering if yall have any advice or maybe some websites that could help me out with this or maybe some ideas to get me thinking. Thank you for all the help, I appreciate all comments. Also if this in the wrong section, please tell me which section would be a better fit for this question. Thanks.

Answer
Don't worry you'll probably have to change career 5+ times in your life. Complete the accounting and keep a hand in the other areas.

Congrats on your initiative. Good research efforts.
Complete thorough realistic research to achieve life sustaining income. Maybe accounting, engineering, law, medicine, computers, .... Always get job descriptions with course requirements from employers, unions, certification groups/associations. Donât sign up for education till youâve done this, EVER!!!

Pick a path where you don't start working bankrupt with debt. Don't become another casualty of the Trillion$ student debt. You must earn enough, $200k+ to support a family in a major City. Do not low ball your life and your family. If you can't find work volunteer to get in the door. Try volunteering at good potential employers and go down from there to community service, but get in anywhere and start working/networking, even if itâs for free. Be a model worker, no yapping, internet, cell phone..start work 30 minutes early and end work 30 minutes after day's end. Keep learning from more courses, read books, get another language, etc.

There are almost 50 million people on food stamps, ~20% of males 25 to 54 yrs not working, lowest SATs in 40 years, debt to GDP over 100%, 25% of global prison inmates with only 5% of global population, etc, and whatâs uncle Samâs answer to America's problem, which impacts the rest of the planet? Corrupt political paralysis and meteoric debt plague spiking by adding a trillion dollars of debt in 2013 to criminally prop up financial markets artificially. What a mess we live in!

You are On Your Own. YOYO's the word. Never forget it. Take control of your own lives and ignore whatever fictional solutions the politicians and corporate bobble heads throw around as their self-profiteering benevolence.

Abandon obese consumer spending debt addiction culture and resulting self-enslavement. Cut your lifestyle in half or less of the destructive unrealistic American dream nightmare standard....small house or apt..one car or no car .. always have a second job cause the one you have can/will disappear ...save and invest over 50% of your income if you can .... stay with your parents....parents move in with your kids...Rent with friends...rent rooms in your home ..Live like the wage you make today could be the last you'll earn, always. Stay away from Ponziâs, addictions, unhealthy lifestyles, get rich scams, online rip offs and purple Kool-Aid cults.

Most of all maintain constructive positive relationships and forward planning. Have fun at it without spending money. What you want to do is great but do it with a strong dose of reality and caring for your future, family and community. Good luck! Cheers:).

good but cheap laptop?

So I'm going to college in september and I want to get a laptop for college. I want a good laptop but a cheap one. I want it to be able to not break for no reason. Any ideas of what laptop is best???

Answer
I also needed a laptop for college. I researched a few sites. I figured out exactly what I needed. I could not believe the best deal I found was at Walmart. I don`t like Wal-mart,lol. I went last night and got an Acer laptop (Aspire 5515 series notebook). I need memory, this laptop has 3 GB. A 15.4 screen. It seems really simple, wich is perfect for me. I do not game. I am boring, and need to do a lot of word processing. I also have a lot of files. I paid $298.00 on sale. I plan on upgrading in about a year, and giving this laptop to my daughter. By the way, If I had an extra $1,000.00 I wanted to get a Studio XPS 13, or something like that.

Do federal loans immediately go towards your tuition, or can you use the loan for a laptop instead?

Daniel Oga

I want to buy a laptop for college (not 2012, but 2013 (I'm planning a year early), and I don't know if I will have to use the federal loan for tuition or if I can use it for a laptop instead and just have the college I go to put more private loans into my financial package for college so I won't have to pull out a private loan myself.

Also, can I receive a federal loan after my financial package for college is already put together? I'm afraid of private loans since they lead to massive debt.
Okay you idiots, I am trying to get a job, but I don't have transportation, the bus system is crap, and there are no job openings in urban California, especially not for teenagers. So please stop with the "just get a job" crap because there are no jobs that I can get. I'm going to have to wait until college before I can get an on-campus job. There's a reason why college graduates aren't able to get jobs anymore, and it's because there are no jobs. We're not living in 2006 anymore where everything is lovely and jobs are reqdily available due to a booming economy.

Answer
Also schools do not add private loans to your financial aid package. You must apply for them all by yourself and must have a credit worthy cosigner. Federal loans are the majority of financial aid packages for most students.

Do not plan on using student loan money for a laptop. Get a job now and start saving and you'll have more than enough for a laptop by the end of this school year.

MacBook Air. College student. Refurbished. Help please?

GabbyCiera

Is there a big difference between the MacBook Air 2011 and the one from 2012. I need a new laptop, I'm a college student and I refuse to buy any other product besides Apple because my other products by them have longevity. I'm getting a refurbished one from Apple, is it a good idea to get a refurbished one? I need to save money being that I am a college student. Plus I believe I get an educational discount or I can get a military one because my dad is retired military.

Answer
Longevity?

I have never had to throw out any PC for any other reason than having to eventually upgrade.

Apple stuff is not immune to that! Note how Apple fans throw out their iProducts as soon as a new version is released every year or two.

Are Toshiba laptops ideal for college students?

Pony

I'm laptop shopping and I have a budget. I saw a Toshiba laptop for sale at Office Max for $400. It has a 15.6'' screen and a 250GB hard drive and a 3GB memory. Good for a college student?

Answer
I have had a Toshiba computer and i honestly would not reccomend it. Mine always over heated and shut down while i was just browsing the web. Also, the battery doesn't last very long. It would freeze up a lot also, and eventually the gears inside it started grinding only after about a year of using it, and i never dropped it! I wouldn't reccomend getting it.

Toshiba Satellite Laptop?

Sylvia

I dont no much about computers only the basics so i have a question. I was looking at a Toshiba i3 satellite laptop to buy and Im considering on purchasing this but i want to learn more about it. So what is the satellite about on this Toshiba i3 satellite laptop about??

Answer
Satellite is just the name of model from Toshiba. Just like Windows is name of an operating system from Microsoft or NASDAQ is name of stock market.

Toshiba has different models of laptops for sale.
- Toshiba Satellite series is for students, office users and light gamers.
- Toshiba Portégé are ultraportable laptops with extended battery life.
- Toshiba Qosmio are for high end gamers and they are bit expensive.

Here's Toshiba Laptop store at Amazon for every need and budget - http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_359693022_2?ie=UTF8&docId=1000696451&tag=basebal-20&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1NZH0EHVKB1N1P12ZP8X&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1346326982&pf_rd_i=598398

If you're buying laptop for first time, then get Intel i3 processor, 4GB RAM and 500GB hard drive. You can pick at Toshiba Satellite L755D-S5162 15.6 for $499.99

It's great laptop for office work, surfing the web and light gaming.

What are my chances of getting into University of Chicago Early Action, Stanford Regular Decision, and Columbia Early Decision
I have a 4.2 unweighted GPA
My SAT Scores:
690 Reading Comprehension
720 Math
800 Writing

Answer
Wow! Impressive. I'm a bit confused about how your unweighted GPA could be 4.2 when the maximum on the 4.0 scale is 4.0, but I'm guessing that was a typo.

You *should* be able to get into the University of Chicago Early Action if you have strong letters of recommendations and write outstanding application essays. It's an excellent, extremely competitive university, though, so you'll definitely need to have some "safety schools" lined up to apply to regular decision if necessary. It's not possible to apply to Columbia and Chicago Early Action / Decision; you have to choose one or the other. Both universities, along with many others, have policies prohibiting early decision / early action applicants from applying to any other private university under their early action / early decision program. You can apply to as many colleges as you'd like during the regular decision round, but you can only apply to one private university early. The exclusion usually does not apply to public universities, so you would be permitted to apply to Chicago *or* Columbia early *and* to a state university.

Good luck!

What is the best laptop for me?

I am saving up for a laptop, but I cant seem to find the right one for me.. any tips? If you know of a web sight that quizzes you or something that would be great.

But otherwise this is what I'm looking for
-Good batterie life
-Fast
-Web cam installed
-Thin
-Light
-Runs on windows (Either 7 or 8)
-On budget ( $200-$300 )
I

Answer
Windows 8 isn't as bad as everyone says, yes it runs smoother on tablets, but it is no where near the flop range of say "vista". I mean these are lower end computers, but they are what you get with what you pay with laptops. Laptops give you hardly any bang for your buck, and if you don't need to carry around the computer and will primarily use it in home I recommend getting a desktop.

Check amazon and put in your specifications, you won't find a lot, but a few may pop up.

http://www.amazon.com/HP-2000-2b09WM-15-6-Inch-Laptop-Winter/dp/B00A4TN97S/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1365730916&sr=1-4&keywords=laptop

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_st?keywords=laptop&qid=1365730916&rh=n%3A172282%2Ck%3Alaptop%2Cp_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A2257853011%2Cp_72%3A1248880011&sort=popularity-rank

If you only have 200-300 dollars to spend and you need this laptop as a primary computer, I would just save up until I have around 600-800 dollars and purchase and old i3 or i5 with atleast a 1.7ghz processor, and at least 2gb of ram. May I ask how old are you? Because if you are just a teen, id wait to graduate and use graduation cash to buy a laptop for college, then again I feel desktops are better for college. I also don't see why thinness/weight should matter too much, just get a comp that can fit in the bag you carry. When on a budget "cute/sleekness" don't really matter.

But yeah if you want a decent laptop that lasts you will have to cough up a couple extra hundred dollars, just because laptops are quite expensive compared to their sexy desktop counter parts. Amazing how smaller parts and less power cost more just because it is mobile o.0. Just do research on computer forums.. I'd buy a comp from bestbuy. tigerdirect, newegg, or amazon is the best. Some sellers even have warranties.

TLDR, save up more, but don't listen to these crazy people telling you to spend over a grand on a laptop. Make sure you really need a laptop and that a desktop, notebook, or tablet couldn't fill in in its place. It doesn't matter if your computer is cute, it is about specs and quality. You don't need the best, you need what suits your needs. So goodluck saving :) ****hmm maybe the new cheap chromebooks would work for you.

College roommate problem?

John N.

I live in a triple with 2 of my other friends(Steven and Chris) that I've known for a year. Everything was going well the first few weeks of school, and then I started getting slightly annoyed at Chris. Whenever I'm on the computer or I'm watching Netflix, Chris walks over to me and he just sticks his entire head between me and my laptop, to see what I was doing. I assumed he was just playing around but it started getting annoying when he constantly asks "What are you watching?" or "What are you doing?" or "What's that?". I'm the kind of person that likes his own space and privacy most of the time because I'm usually quiet. Chris is also in my class, along with 2 of our other friends. We have weekly quizzes and during week 4, Chris sat on my right when we were taking our quizzes. I noticed in the corner of my eye that he was staring at my quiz(they're all the same questions in the same order), and then he turned his head to look at the quiz of the person on his right and then he started writing. I didn't really care because it was a quiz and he was smart, so he probably would've gotten the answer anyway. I brushed it off, but then for Quizzes 5,6,7, he was doing the same thing. He would tilt his head to both the left and right and just stare at what I wrote on my quiz, or what our other friend wrote and just start filling in stuff on his quiz. I stopped sitting next to him for Quiz 8, so I sat on the far left, while he sat 2 seats down to my right. And he just does it again and again and again for every quiz so far. He's smart; he's the kind of person that instantly understands the material and stuff, but something about him looking at people's quizzes bothered me. One day, I casually asked why he tilts his head to look at my quiz when he's already smart, and he says "I was just checking your answers. I already solved it, but I just wanted to make sure". I'm the kind of person that takes quizzes, exams, tests seriously in college, but he doesn't seem to care that he cheats all the time. We took our first midterm about 2 months ago, and a few days after we took it, all 4 of us were discussing answers and Chris was talking about the multiple choice questions and then he casually says "I got everything right for the fill in the blanks questions, and I just copied all of your multiple choice answers" to my friend who sat to his left. And then on the day of the 2nd midterm, we got to class and the professor was separating people and assigning them seats (one person sits in the front of class, then the next person in line sits in the back, and repeat) to prevent cheating. My friend Brad was first in line, followed by Chris, then myself, then my friend Jake. When Chris saw that our professor was assigning seats, he slowly stepped back, and told me to go in front of him. I didn't understand what he meant, but then he just shoved me to the front to take his spot in the line(I realized he just wanted to sit next to Brad in the front to copy off of his answers), and the professor looked at me suspiciously and told me to sit in the back. And then she assigns Chris to the front, and he sits next to Brad. I didn't care; I sat in the back like I was assigned to, and the professor didn't have a reason to accuse me of cheating when we haven't taken the test yet, but the fact that Chris did that was just unbelievable. Again, he's really smart; he gets A's on all the quizzes/midterms in the class. So during the 2nd midterm, I looked up and saw him sitting in the front with his hood over his head looking down on his paper, and then he shifts his head to look at Jake's midterm on the left(there were different forms, but had similar questions). We got our scores a few days later and he gets an A again and while Jake and I were discussing the multiple choice questions, Chris just says "I didn't know like half of the multiple choice, so I copied some of your answers, Jake". Jake doesn't seem to care that Chris copies off of him, but why do I care so much? Lots of people cheat in college but I guess I never really knew Chris was like this until I lived in the same room as him this year. He never seemed like the type to cheat, when I met him last year. And what bothers me the most is how he has no dignity whatsoever; how can someone cheat for every single quiz and midterm? He may be smart, but that's just unfair for people who study countless hours and end up getting either lower or the same score as him. And the thing is, he's lazy in class; he brings his iPod and just plays games during lectures. So I guess my question really is... What do I do about all of this? Do I just keep it to myself and shut up?

Answer
Woah! too long bro, i dont have that kind of attention span hahaha. But you are angry and ranting and I totally get that. I have some roommates that I absolutely loathe, but I have been able to coexist at least. The best way to address these problems is just to tell him about it. Make sure to be respectful and patient when talking about your problems to avoid making hard feelings, especially since your roommates are your friends. There's a chance it may continue to suck and you will just have to look forward to moving out :/ Good luck

Can I Purchase A Laptop With A College Student Stafford Loan?

Byron W

I'm heading to college in January, this will be my first year away from home as I am transferring from community college. I understand that I need $6,000 from a stafford loan to cover the rest of my tuition and I was considering applying for an extra $2,000 for a nice computer/laptop. Will a Stafford loan cover this or will I have to take out a private loan?

(also, I applied for a private loan with chase and got denied even with a co-signer)

Answer
Loans for students help the student to deal with all the expenses that are to be incurred during his education phase like it includes entire cost of the studentâs education from tuition fees, accommodation, books, and computers to transportation and many more.

Before raising loans for students borrower must look into the amount that a course require so that on basis of the amount borrower can raise the loan amount. This amount is depended upon the fees and other expenses that the borrowers want to cover under student loans. Student with bad credit can also avail loans for students as for that student have to take the loan along with a co-signer who has a good credit history. This way interest rate is also lowered otherwise they may charged little higher interest rate.

A Good Laptop for a College Student?

golden gir

It will be my first year college and I want to buy a new laptop. I am majoring in Human Services/ Psychology. I have been looking at HP laptops but I know there are other good brand of laptops. I just want to be sure of the laptop I will get

Answer
A good laptop can be down to personal taste and sometimes the bigger manufacturers dont always mean better quality.

At http://www.itrecyclinguk.co.uk they are able to supply second hand laptops that have been refurbished at a hugely reduced rate and welcome students. As they are based in Lancaster they have 15,000 at Lancaster University.

I"m getting redy to buy a laptop for college next fall! i want to get a jump start . one less thing to pay for when it come up. i want to be a photographer so that mean i'll be a art mager! the art lab at a lot of school i thinking about have mac's lab. should i get a mac our just a pc? does it matter? what would you do? how much should i speened?

Answer
With OS X Leopard, you can install Windows (use XP, not that awful Vista) on your Mac so it doesn't really matter.

Most colleges are very Mac-friendly and typically only some math and business schools have strong preferences for PC laptops. However, fine arts and photography in general has a strong Mac culture so I would recommend sticking with Apple. No viruses and spyware so far!

New MacBook Pro's are expected to be announced in January so there may be some good deals on existing MacBook Pro laptops now. Also, the MacBook went from a minor "A" to "B" revision so there are discounted "A" models (less maximum RAM, older video card) out there.

Keep in mind that there's a discount for higher education students. A letter of intent or acceptance letter is usually sufficient to get the higher ed discount.

As far as spending, anywhere from around $1000 to $2000.
(A select handful of college bookstores have prices lower than Apple's higher ed site.) A MacBook with a Superdrive is what you'll need, minimally. A MacBook Pro gets you a larger screen and keyboard, some performance boost (like longer battery life, Firewire 800) as well as a better video card.

I also recommend AppleCare, so you'll be guaranteed an operational computer and tech support (out of Austin, TX) for three years. Most universities have a discounted student license for Microsoft Office (Office 2008 will be out in a couple months) that costs less than the student-teacher edition you find in stores. The academic version of Photoshop is several hundred dollars less than the consumer version, so buy it from the college store.

Good luck and happy shooting!

im going into 11th grade and im finally buying a laptop. im probably going to use this in college as well, so ive been looking around and im not sure what to get. definitely a backlit keyboard, as wel as speed and dependability. just something good for school-with powerpoint, word, etc. also a good computer to upload my pictures too, since i LOVE photography. ive been looking at the sony vaio s series, and i like it alot but its so expensive! i want the 13 inch screen size, and compact/thin design. is there anything better out there?

Answer
Probably a macbook, those are the best right now and for photography you will want something more powerful than Windows.

laptops for college students?

clause324

hey guys i need some help with buying a laptop for college. these are the specification.

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 2GB
Hard Drive: 80-100GB
Media: DVD+/-RW drive
Network Port: 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet port
Wireless Access: 802.11g compliant
Price: less than $1000

also it should be long lasting it should work efficiently for at least 3yrs.

thank you

Answer
Laptops with those specs should all be under $1000. Dell is the best for low-end laptops, for performance, reliability and lastability. They have useless tech support, so you'll need to know a bit about laptops. HP is another brand worth looking into. Their laptops are average, but you can easily get one with the specs you wanted, for under $1000, they'll probably last three years, and they have very good support for all their computers. I had to setup 200 computers for a business once and 50 of them failed within a week. HP sent a worker from the US to replace motherboards in all of the computers.

I wouldn't recommend you to get Acer or Compaq laptops, because they aren't very reliable, and they have lots of proprietary hardware, so if a component breaks, they'll charge a lot for repairs. Asus and Toshiba are good brands, but their low end laptops are terrible compared to their mid-level laptops. Sony laptops are completely overpriced, and the other big laptop manufacturers (IBM, Lenovo, Benq, gateway etc.) make pretty ordinary, low end laptops.

Basically, stick with Dell or HP.

Help in buying laptop for a college student?

me

I am now going to Lake Forest College and want to buy a laptop. I check my college's site and see that the campus does offer free Internet access (wireless & "wired"). I am considering the following laptops: Dell Inspiron 15, Dell Studio 15, HP dv4 series, and the HP G60t since they are on sale and offer student discount. I heard Mac is super good but it is very expensive and the student discount really isn't much. I did hear both good things and bad things about the netbooks but I don't really think I want to buy it because the campus does offer free internet access anyways. (By the way, I am going to live on campus). My house also provides Wi-Fi and so yeah what do you think; should I really consider a netbook or should I buy one of the brand that I mentioned? Is there any other I should consider? What are some good laptops right now for college students?

Answer
Compaq and HP depending on what they are studying I would stay away from Dell's they have cheap computers but the " get what you pay for" rings true. It is good to invest in something that won't slow or backup. College students are connected but they need the right connections to make the grade.

anything more than 160gigs is great. the more storage they have the faster the response. the computer has to do a lot of things before the web page can come up. so go for storage and go for quality.

New Laptop for College-Bound student?

lolaurence

Hey guys, I'm going to graduate soon and for a graduation present my mom is giving me a $500 limit on a brand new laptop.
What's the best laptop I can get out there within the price range.

Keep in mind that this laptop must be able to suit my needs:
Lots of music, pictures and videos
Networking (ex. Myspace, Aim, Yahoo, Windows Live)
School Work (ex. Big papers, powerpoints, spreadsheets)
Decent battery life

I prefer a Windows system, but if there's a good Mac out there that'll fit these needs, then by all means PLEASE let me know.
Thanks yahoo!
-Laurence

Answer
Hell Laurence,
If your mom is providing you with $500, then why don't you better wait for some few more days and ask for $500 more so that you can buy a good Dell laptop in that price. The price of the technology and the electronics goods are decreasing every day, so I think it would be a prudent decision if you can wait a bit longer and then buy a brand new hunk laptop.

As far as your choices are concerned -- the one that you have mentioned; I think you will get all those features in that price. But if you are in hurry, then you can buy a laptop at that price. You will get all those features you have mentioned. Those are the basic features of any computer. So, any computer can have at least those features. You do not need to worry about it, dude.

Wish you all the best with your new laptop.

Rajesh Chaudhary

College Fall 2014, whats the best laptop to get??

Nicholas

I want it to be durable and last me over 4years without slowing down and crashing and i want the specs like whats the processor and ram and stuff. Thanks!

Answer
1. What is your budget?

You could spend $300 on a laptop or $3000 on a high end convertible tablet like I had to as an engineering student.

Which laptop is best is entirely dependent on how much you are willing to spend.

Engineering/Comsci student laptop?

Dominick T

I will be going to a highly competitive college for engineering next semester, and while I haven't figured out my major, I do know that I will be needing a good computer.
I find it difficult to search through the internet only to find customization pages that give me questions as vague as "are you going to be using your laptop for school?" (no I do not want a netbook, bestbuy)
anyway, I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for a computer specifically geared toward engineering or computer science, meaning it would be able to handle both intensive processing applications as well as above-average graphical applications (ie dedicated video card). Thanks for the help

Answer
I know this probably doesn't answer your question, but I bought a 400 dollar e-machine desktop from walmart and I am graduating in May with an electrical engineering degree, and my computer engineering friends just have your standard dell laptop . My suggestion is to not buy something too expensive, but don't buy a netbook for sure. A netbook is worthless for anything you want to do. I mean all your going to need is something with Microsoft office(or open office for free) and some kind of program to write computer programs with right?

What is a good engineering laptop for college?

I'm planning on entering college in one year. I'd like to major in either Electrical,Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering. I've heard that computer programs like CAD are part of the classes. What would be a good laptop to handle this easily?

Also, money is a little tight. What would be the cheapest option that can still support a lot of programs, memory etc.?

Answer
Brand does not matter.

Just make sure you have a Intel Core Duo Processor or AMD Athlon or AMD Turion Processor. Make sure you have a minimum of 2GB ram. The more, the better.

As in hard drive memory, you don't need much. In my 4 years of college in engineering, I only used 20GB on my laptop, and most laptops these days come with 250GB as a standard.

Having at least 2 USB ports is helpful and built in Wi-Fi and bluetooth connectivity.

That is all you need.
You do use programs like AutoCAD, Pro-E, Rockwell Arena Simulation Software, Minitab. You might have many Microsoft word, powerpoint, and excel files open at the same time. That is why you need more ram. 2GB minimum. 4 GB would be great for multitasking on the computer without it freezing.

You can get a good powerful laptop with everything you need for $600.

What should i buy for my college?

Gaurav Sin

Laptop or a tablet

Answer
A laptop. You do NOT want to write and edit a ten-page paper on a touchscreen keyboard!

Need more reasons? Here's a great article I found about why tablets are a bad idea for college: http://dealnews.com/pages/10-Reasons-Not-to-Buy-an-iPad-for-a-College-Student-07-20-2011.html

If you want a tablet for fun in addition to a laptop, great. But the laptop is a better idea for doing school work.

When is the new Macbook Pro 2011 expected to update?

Alyssa

I'm going to college in fall 2011 and am going to buy a macbook pro. I keep hearing these rumors about the new Mac OS X Lion coming out but does this mean a whole new model will come out too? When do you recommend I buy my laptop for college? Now or August? Also, what accessories do you recommend for a college student besides a bag/case and security lock?

Answer
Mac OS X Lion was announced yesterday in WWDC 2011 and it's coming out in July.
It will be available for update through Mac App Store for 29.99$.

MacBook Pro was updated 103 days ago, and it will be updated in about other 150.

I would recommend you to buy your laptop in August, if you don't need it now.
I would also recommend you a simple bag, not any security locks and stupid things.
If your laptop has been stolen, you lose it, with Security lock or without.

Hi! So i really need a laptop but im on a budget. Id like for it to have at least 4GB, 14 inch, something like intel core i3 and up, a webcam etc but under $500. I hear HP dandelion breeze and Dell 14' Inspiron N411Z are good. What do you think? Anyone tech savvy- please recommend any laptops for me and where I could probably buy them. Thanks!

Answer
I just got this one and I love it!!

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+14%26%2334%3B+Laptop+-+4GB+Memory+-+320GB+Hard+Drive+-+Matte+Pink/5732476.p?skuId=5732476&id=1218688220484#BVRRWidgetID

I got it in pink, but it also comes in lime green, and a blue that actually looks black. Its only $329.99 and it works great! I've been loving it so far! The only thing I'm not so crazy about is the speakers don't get too loud. It works really fast though and I love how cool it looks! Its also super light because it does not have a disc drive, but I got it in a bundle with an external one and a case! I barely use the disc drive so this works great for me!! Also the battery life is great it lasts for like 5/6 hours!!!
I used to buy more expensive laptops, but then I realized that even the expensive ones will break in a few years so why not buy a cheap one that gets the job done and then it wont be as big a deal when it breaks!
This one works just as good as my previous $600 laptop!!

Hope this helps!! :)

Any recommended PDAs for an entering medical student?

hmmm...

Hi, I'm making plans to start medical school next fall, and I'd like to replace my old Sony Clie with a new PDA. I've been looking at the Palm Tungsten E2 and the Palm TX as possible candidates. Can anyone in medical school or in the medical profession offer any suggestions? By the way, I have Windows Vista on my home computer if that makes a difference.

Answer
I am a current 2nd year medical student and what I recommend is to wait. The first two years are essentially all basic science, so you lug around a lot of books, notebooks and laptop for your information and you don't really need a PDA to look up facts quickly because you aren't in clinic or the hospital. (Besides, there are always computer with Internet access around). The second reason I suggest you wait is that often times the school will recommend a certain product or even have deals with manufacturers for discounts.

However, if you use the PDA for keeping your schedule and such, then if you want to upgrade, I suggest going for an integrated PDA/phone. With everything you have to carry, integration is nice. Several of my classmates use Treos, Blackberrys, HTC Tilts or even the iPhone.

Choosing a laptop for college?

hitNrunn

I'm going to be going to college in the fall of 2013, and my parents want to give me a laptop for Christmas. I would like something that Microsoft office, or similar software. I also am big into music, movies, and some amateur photography and gaming. I need something with good hard drive space. My biggest concern is being able to update or replace parts so it isn't too slow in a year or two. I don't care if it's Mac or PC, but please be specific and/or include links. Thanks!

Answer
For a college undergraduate who is short on money, a budget laptop is a good buy. Some of the best budget laptops with reasonable prices those have discount for students but also it is important that they can run new applications.

Best laptop for a college student majoring in Health Administration?

Chris

All models are 2013's

15 Inch Macbook Pro
15 Inch Macbook Pro Retina Display
13 Inch Macbook Air
11 Inch Macbook Air

Answer
You don't need a Mac...

What type of work will you be doing. Air's don't have a lot of memory and if you are running big programs, I would highly avoid.

You can also just get a PC for a lot less? You just need a computer. If you can afford or willing to thrown down the big bucks for these mac, go ahead. Retina Display 15 inch is obviously the best one.

I have a Dell Laptop and a 15inch Macbook pro. The mac is obviously more ascetically pleasing and you don't run into problems with drivers, but I sort of regret buying it. Lots of programs I want or things I want to do would be a lot easier on a PC. You can always bootcamp it, but that requires you to partition the memory and once you do it, you can't change it. So if you didn't allocate enough memory to the windows portion, your pretty much screwed. Probably have to remove the whole thing and start from scratch.

What is a good laptop for college student?

Mr.Highway

I'm in college and I need a laptop, but I'm not too familiar with laptops that are out now. I just need a laptop for the basic things such as, browsing, writing papers, and using things such as power point. I don't care if it has Skype or whatever else these new top of the line laptops have.

If you can list the brand name and where I can find it, it will be absolutely helpful. Thank you in advance!
@AsHisH: I am on a budget of $500, so anything below that.

Answer
Toshiba is a good brand for laptops. Also consider netbooks if you're going to only be using it for the this you listed. They can do all of the above and is smaller and more portable.
Check out the following website for computers.

Best laptop for a college student?

...

I'm looking for something that is not slow at all (I HATE slow computers). That's the most important thing. I will be typing papers, listening to music, and uploading photos. Normal stuff: no gaming or anything like that. I would like to avoid Macs, because I can't afford one. So, that should give you an idea of my budget (less than $1000). I was thinking an HP, but I'm pretty much clueless on computers. I really just don't want any issues that I have to drag it in to get fixed for. Oh and I want it to be light weight! Thanks!

Answer
If you don't want a slow laptop then it is better to have a good processor because in the end processor determines the speed of a laptop. There are many available in the market under your price range from which you can decide for yourself. Here is a list of those popular laptops:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_nr_p_36_6?bbn=565108&qid=1366910149&rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A%21493964%2Cn%3A541966%2Cn%3A565108&rnid=2421885011&low-price=&high-price=1000&x=16&y=6&tag=faowiw-20

For your ease I would recommend one of them which is one of the latest from HP. HP Envy dv6 can be one option because it has really good and fast processor alongside other features with the price of $700. It has Intel 3rd generation Core i7-3630QM 2.4Ghz processor which is one of the powerful available in the market. It has 8GB RAM of memory and 750GB HD of storage. It has 15.6" 1366x768 screen with Beats Audio. So overall it is really fast and efficient laptop for which you can go for.

You can see the comment from an actual user for further knowing about. Here is a comment from an actual user:

What is the best laptop for a college student?

Hello

I'm going to be attending college in the fall, and I figure I should start thinking about what laptop to get now. I'm going to be a business student, and I'm going to a college that's pretty neutral when it comes to PC vs Mac. The kind of schoolwork I'll be doing shouldn't be too demanding for a computer. Other than schoolwork, I'm always on the Internet, I download and listen to music frequently, I watch videos and occasionally movies online, and I play games every once in a while. I need something that is durable (must be able to survive college life) and portable. My price range is around $900-1,200. What would you recommend?

* If you don't want to recommend a specific laptop, recommendations on the specs that I should look for (RAM, hard drive space, processor, etc.) would be a big help too. Thanks!

Answer
Hi there,

Since you will be using your laptop at college, you should look into the more portable options, so that you can take it to class. Many laptops have 4 GB of RAM, which should be plenty for what you will be using it for. Since you seem to have a lot of music on your computer, make sure you get one with plenty of storage space.

One laptop worth checking out is the Dell Studio 15 because is has 4 GB of RAM, 500 GB storage, and a nice screen size for watching movies (it's also only $699).

Another great option is the Sony VAIO FW. It is a bit heavier than the Dell, but also has a larger screen. It even has a Blu-ray player/burner.

I hope this was helpful. You can use a tool called PC Scout to find other laptops in your price range. Check out the link below!

Allow me to save some space and links by not repeating a lot of the same information.
In this answer, I discussed and linked to information about CPU, graphics, and quality:

That is despite whether a person's favorite brand is considered good or bad. Truth gets a thumbs down every now and then.
Rescuecom issues occassional industry quality reports, and PCWorld does an annual survey.
Within a laptop brand, they have their own tiers.
High to low
Lenovo Thinkpad and then Ideapad and then Essentials
HP Probook, Elite, Envy, and then Pavilion
Dell has Latitude, XPS and Precision as their good ones, and then Inspiron.
All Acer-Gateway is questionable
Sony cheap laptops are not good but their expensive ones are OK
Samsung's new ATIV 2 is their new consumer low end, but the rest of the product line is generally excellent.
Asus is simple to understand, the more they cost, the better they are. Their under $400 is low grade, but as you go up in price they do a better construction.
Toshiba business line is excellent, but Satellites are not rated well.

In Photography, you should try to afford a 1080p display.
You need to offer a price point and whether battery life and weight are important factors.
If you can afford it, Lenovo Y510p with a 1080p display at about $1000 is impressive.
Google Lenovo Student Portal, and Lenovo Barnes and Noble Gold for a small discount.
$655 (plus tax in CA, TN, NJ) for a Sony with a low voltage i5 and 1080p display would be nice

Even though only HD 4000, the 1080p display is a big plus to photography.
If trying to go as cheap as possible but still good, look for a Samsung with i5-3210M, and a decent graphics card would be a big bonus.
$580 Samsung - No optical drive

$770, a Toshiba Satellite with a quad core Haswell i7, GT 740M graphics card, but a standard display

What are some good laptops for engineering college students?

Brandon

Here are my requirements:
-Windows 7
-A intel core i5 or i7 processor
-At least 6GB ram
-At least 500GB hard drive
-Wireless Networking

I am looking for something that would work for my next 4 years in college. If you don't really know about engineering school, there are some programs that take a lot of ram and need a decent graphics card, so it can't be a piece of shit. If it meets the requirements it should work good though. I am looking for something in the $500 - $1,000 range, but definitely under $1,500. I can get some pretty good discounts on Dell, HP, and Lenovo computers through my school so those are the preferred brands. I also would prefer a full keyboard and something that has at least a 15 inch screen. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Most reliable laptop brands: the results

Apple tops the list, as might be expected from such a premium PC builder. Apple products are far from cheap, but they do offer a quality experience. Runner up Dell has a very different business model. It, like other high-ranking brands HP and Asus, operates as a volume laptop maker, selling many thousands of laptops every week. We would expect to see them, and Lenovo, high up in our list because they sell so many PCs: but their higher ranking suggests a lot of satisfied customers.

Apple: 19%
Dell: 12%
Asus: 11%
HP: 11%
Acer: 9%
Lenovo: 9%
Toshiba: 9%
Samsung: 7%
Sony: 6%
Alienware: 3%
Fujitsu: 1%
MSI: 1%
Panasonic: 1%
I do not agree with this. But this was the results of a large survey...

That is a great question, hope I was able to help. Good Luck...

What is the best laptop for online college students?

Q. I don't need anything for gaming and stuff like that, I just need to know what laptop is going to be the fastest most efficient and has the longest life?
Thank you
((((MM))))) so great to see you =D

Answer
I think one of the main things to consider when buying a computer is the processor, the type of processor you have impacts speed and your ability to do more than one task at a time. ( And so does memory, but unlike memory processors can be expensive to upgrade ) Since processors can be so expensive to upgrade, I would recommend buying a computer with the fastest processor that is within reason. ( at some point the price begins to get significantly higher without as much increase in speed )

Memory ( RAM ) is also important for the speed of the computer, it is easier to upgrade later than other things, but I would recommend starting at 3 GB of RAM, but 4 GB would be better.

I'm not sure why so many people are down on Windows Vista, I haven't had much trouble with it, and I can't think of anything that I have had trouble with that hasn't been resolved.

I found a review from Cnet.com that list retail laptops and rates them, if you are considering buying from retail stores this may be helpful.

I am partial to Dell, they often have good prices on computers and you can specify what you want, so you can upgrade the processor and memory, and if you buy a computer with a faster processor I believe it will increase the time that it is serviceable to you. ( I mean it won't become " outdated " as quickly. ) You can check out Dell's website to look around:

I hope that this is helpful, and I hope you find the laptop that you are looking for and that suits all your needs.

sincerely,
your friend, andrew

getting a laptop for college?

Student

alrighty, well i just graduated from college so i will be receiving a laptop that i can take to college with me
so i need something reliable that can last for AT LEAST four years, hopefully many more

well alright, i really like macs but I am aware of the major cost difference between a mac and other lap tops. Do you think that the additional cost is worth it?
Also do you think the additional cost for a Macbook Pro is worth it, or should I go with just a Macbook if i end up getting a mac?

thank you in advance!
wait, i just graduated from HIGHSCHOOL and am going to College

Answer
If you can afford it, I recommend the Mac, and here's why. I switched from PC to Mac after working in the computer industry as a programmer and network tech for almost 20 years. One of the reasons I left the computer industry was that I simply got tired of maintaining Microsoft products. I was a Mac basher for years, and told Mac users that they needed to get "real computers." In my first year of graduate school at Wake Forest University, I needed to play a video for a presentation, and all of sudden my PC started playing the audio in the video I had at half speed while playing the video itself at full speed. i was able to fix the problem after about an hour and half of work, but it was, for me the straw that broke the camel's back. I had been reading some about the new Intel Macs that could run both OS X and Windows, so I decided I had nothing to lose and bought my first Mac.

I also purchased Parallels with the Mac so I could run Windows. Within a few months, however, I was not running Windows at all, and I decided to delete it off of my system, and I have not run Windows on my Mac since. I simply have no reason to.

The biggest thing for me, is that in the 3 years I have been a Mac owner, I have never had to re-install a single piece of software to get it working right. I have not had to re-install the OS. (I typically had to reinstall Windows every year to year and a half because it simply got too slow.) When the case on my Macbook developed a small crack, I took it to a nearby Apple store, and the problem was fixed within 2 hours. Apple has much better customer service than any other computer company I have ever dealt with.

After years of making fun of Macs, I decided that Apple does indeed have a superior product. It is going to take a lot for me to ever go back to using Windows. Do they cost more, yes. But I believe they are worth it. Not to mention, they are the only computer on the planet that allow you to easity run Windows, Mac, or Linux software.

So, obviously I recommend the Mac.

Here is the thing about asking a question like this. Make sure you get an answer from someone who has used both Macs and Windows based PCs. It is the only way you can give a fair answer. You won't see me bashing Windows in the same way that some PC users bash Macs. What I am posting is my own personal experience.

It is also nice not to have to worry very much about viruses or spyware. Do Mac viruses exist? Yes, but there are very few of them. A PC virus cannot run on a Mac, so I don't have to worry about any of my office mates infecting me. (I run the only Mac.)

If you decide on getting a Mac, you will have some choices in word processors. The first and most obvious choice is Microsoft Office '08. The second choice is OpenOffice.org (or the special Mac version called NeoOffice, both are free). This is starting to be used a little bit more in university settings, and is very compatible with Word. (You can load and save Word files.) When I was in Grad school, I used Apple's Pages (the version of Word available at that time ran slowly on Intel Macs) and e-mailed my papers in .pdf format (I never had a professor have a problem with that.) Pages can also save in Word format, but it is not quite as compatible as OpenOffice.org. (I have not had any need to write a paper in the new version of Pages, so I don't know if the new version is any better.) Pages is a part of the iWork suite, and is still my favorite word processor on the Mac. It combines the features of a Word Processor and desktop publisher, and is a great program, in my opinion.

I have included links to all the software I mentioned below. As for which model to get, any Mac is going to be a nice computer. I personally use one of the new aluminum MacBooks. I like their compact size, and don't need any of the features in the MacBook Pro. (And the difference between the two is now much less than it has been in the past.)

My suggestion would be to buy your Mac and then try the free demos of Office and iWork to see what you like best. Links for all these programs are below.

BTW, once you get your student ID, you become eligible for a student discount from Apple.

Computer teacher, or college grad?

Jesse W

My aunt's sister graduated college with a major in computers. My computer teacher just teaches.

Issues they disagree on:

Laptops: It's not good to move them while they're on. It damages the hard drive (Teacher)
It doesn't matter (aunt's sister)

Wifi: People can decrypt the info you send over the airways and read everything you are doing (Teacher) That's impossible (college grad)

I don't know what to believe! I don't know what to tell my aunt, but I'm going with my teacher on this, b/c it seems logical.
They wouldn't have to follow you around if you stayed in one spot

Answer
well, they're are both right in a way.

if you accelerate a laptop quickly, you can damage a hard drive, however, you have to accelerate it very fast, such as a short drop. just moving it from the desk to the couch is fine.

same with the wifi, if you use an older, broken form of encryption, someone can listen and decrypt it. if you use WPA2 with a long password, it is statistically improbable that it can be decrypted.

so your aunt's sister is a realist, and your teacher is paranoid.
