What would be a good LAPTOP for an architect?

andalpz

Hello, I'm currently a senior in high school. I'm about to graduate and go to architecture school. I'm looking for a laptop to use while I'm in college. I need one to use all the programs I need, (example: Auto CAD) I'm not quite sure what one would be the best. I need both good performance with all those programs and a big screen. Budget isn't really a problem, so if you could please name a few to look them up! Thanks in advance.

I'd like to suggest one. This is an Upgradeable laptop. This means you can change the processor, ram memory, harddrive, and GRAPHICS CARD.

A LOT of laptops are listed out there, with having a graphics card! It's bull!
They have Integrated Graphics.

This is a graphics chip, (GPU. Graphics Processing Unit. 1.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPU), that is soldered to the laptop's
motherboard. There is no changing it. What graphics 'power' you have, is what you get with the laptop.
To get better graphics, you have to buy a better laptop.

All laptops, have where you can upgrade the amount of ram memory. Also you can usually upgrade the size of the harddrive

Very FEW, have it where you can you replace the processor, if it goes bad. Much less upgrade to a better one.

I only know of Two laptops, that have a genuine graphics card, and not Integrated Graphics. I'm sure there are a FEW more.

This laptop uses a DESKTOP processor! In a desktop processor socket. That's why you can take it out, and upgrade to a more powerful one, anytime you wish!
It uses models of the Intel Core2 Duo processor.
All the way from an Intel Core2 Duo E4300, up to an Intel Core2 Extreme Edition X6800!
LOT's of room for using a Core2 Duo. (I would use an Intel Core2 Duo E8400, but an E7300, or E7400 would do just fine!)

The laptop comes as a 'Barebones' unit. This means you have to buy and install, the processor, ram memory, harddrive, and graphics card.
To do the installation of these needed hardware components, you just turn the laptop over on it's top cover, and remove FOUR screws from a large panel. Everything is right at your fingertips. How hard is that?

Here's a look at the laptop I want to recommend, 'little brother'. The Asus C90s. A laptop made before the Asus C90P,

The Asus C90P can support up to 4GB of ram. DDR2 at 800Mhz.
(PC6400 which is SO-DIMM style)
There are 320GB Sata hardrives available.

The basic barebones unit itself comes with,
1.Built-in 2.0 Megapixel webcam. It is tilt-able, but also has Face Tracking Feature. You can enable or disable this feature.

2.The LCD screen is a 15.4 inch widescreen. probably seems small for what you might wish. I disagree with this. This size is very easy to carry from classroom to classroom in a backpack, and takes less room at your desk, (or whatever)
The advantage of this laptop is that there's an HDMI port built into the side of the laptop. This means when you get home, or to the dorm, you can plug it into a large screen monitor, or TV.
LOT'S of 'canvas' space then, huh?

3.Comes with a DVD Combo drive, that is Dual Layer and SuperMulti.
Plays CD's and burns them. Plays DVD's and burns them. Can use a dual layer disk, and will read any format of disk out there.
There are HD and BluRay drives available. MORE upgradeability!

4.Has a built-in e-Sata port. Instead of plugging an external Sata harddrive into a Slow USB port, you can use this, and have transference speed of Sata!
There are 3 USB ports on the laptop, though. They are the USB 2.0 style.

5.As you have seen with the Asus C90s, the Asus C90P also has a Large touchpad, and comes with a FingerPrint Reader. Keeps other people's little fingers out of your laptop, since they don't have YOUR fingerprints!
Here is more info, and large photos of the Asus C90s.

Here is the Asus C90P,
4.http://www.excaliberpc.com/588326/asus-c90p-15.4-intel-core.html

My theory is, you could buy and install an Intel Core2 Duo E8400,
5.http://www.excaliberpc.com/588326/asus-c90p-15.4-intel-core.html
install 4GB of 800MHz ram, (PC6400), install a 320GB Sata harddrive, and the Nvidia GeForce 8700M GT with 256MB of DDR3 graphics ram.

(Don't let the 256MB fool you! This is DDR3 graphics ram! Also, the Nvidia GeForce graphics cards that are built especially for these laptops, CAN'T be compared to a GeForce 8600GT for a desktop computer. These are Way more powerful!)

A build using these hardware components, would come to around $1300 US.
The laptop would compare to models that cost $2500 to $3000.

good gifts for college graduates?

A laptop bag, briefcase or nice leather notebook (can't think of the actual name) for job interviews...
