Whats the best laptop for college?

Jonathan

Whats the best laptop for college? Most people nowadays are saying macs but they seem pricey. Is Sony a good brand for laptops. I need something that packs a lot of power, kind of like a gaming laptop.

Answer
These ASUS laptops. Two are 17" so they might not fit the college thing.

Brand buying advise

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

What's a good laptop for college?

I need a new computer for college, but I'm really lost when it comes to computer stuff. I probably want a good amount of memory and at least a little durable. Any suggestions?

BONUS: A few of my friends are into computer gaming; what's the price range for a decent gaming laptop? (I would assume desktop is the way to go, but college laptop comes first.) I don't need nor want a top of the line computer, just something that will run a game.
Yes, I know I want a PC. No, I do not want to blow a couple grand on an alienware laptop.

Where can I find college student discounts on laptops?

perko23

I am looking for a reliable place that gives student discounts on the purchase of a new computer. If any of you have any places that you bought your laptop with a student discount please let me know.

Answer
Most often, the college you were accepted to will offer its students computer and laptop discounts at the bookstore. You should probably check it out when you go to orientation. If you have already gone, check out the bookstore when you go to your college next, whether that be today or next month.

Also, Dell and HP have very generous student discounts on PC laptops, and Apple has a little bit of a student discount on Apple laptops.

What stores offer discounts on laptops for college students?

Kylee Brui

And how much do they typically discount on them.
Also, do you need your student number or just like your class schedule. Thanks

Answer
Yeah. The Apple store has laptops that you can get discounts. If you buy a macbook for college, you also get a free Ipod touch, as well as a discount for the laptop.

Is there a law for laptops in School?

Dean Sigis

Im in highschool and i want to use my laptop more frequently, yehknow to get the feeling of college. Some of my teachers restrict the use of laptops/electronics in classroom. Is there a law/guideline that encourages the use of technology in the classroom that overrules their decision?

Answer
Nope.

Even when you get to college and beyond, it is still left to the professors' discretion as to whether or not they allow laptop use in their classroom. (I'm in law school, and I have classes where we are not permitted to use our computers...)

I am surrounded by laptop note takers in practically every class. Trust me, I almost wish computers were not permitted. When you have a class full of computers, it gets really noisy and distracting and you inevitably have the students who give in to the temptation to use them for purposes other than note taking during class... (There is nothing more obnoxious than having a slacker in front of you who is on Facebook or playing Solitaire while you are trying to pay attention to the professor...)

Don't worry, taking notes on a computer is pretty much a no-brainer; switching the way you take notes will be the least of your concerns when making the transition to college...

Enjoy!

do not know what laptop to get?

i am entering law school and i dont know if i need any special kind of laptop for that

Answer
Contact your school. Nearly all colleges and universities have recommended specifications to guide incoming students who want to purchase computers. Many schools have purchasing programs with special pricing for students.

Laptop needed for College?

seinfeldgi

I need a laptop that has:
A lot of memory
Built-in webcam
Lots of ports
Port for my camera, to upload pics with
6 or more hours of battery life
one that NEVER over heats,
Light weight, medium sized screen,
Fast of course, has Windows and is just a great laptop for College Students.
I will be majoring in Fine Arts / Humanities.
I do not need a laptop for gaming.

I really am looking for a website with a lot of reviews from people that have purchased their laptops.

I am looking at a DELL or XP.
btw, what other laptops are there for college??
All I see is DELL,XP, and MAC, any others that I should be looking at?

I was going with a MAC but I don't really like how the layout is and what it doesn't have for college like Windows, idk, I just didn't like it when I went into the Apple store.

Thank You so much!

I forgot to add that my price range is:
$700-$1,100.

Answer
Realistically, you don't need a laptop for college. I have found that the portability is not necessary. Often times if you look at the University website they run specials on laptops (and sometimes desktops). Usually this is run through either "University Computing" or the Campus bookstore. It is worth checking this out-the reason is often these computers are configured to be perfect for that school.

Something worth considering is a desktop...you can spend alot less money and get a much 'better' computer - more memory, faster processor, bigger/better monitor, and many more capabilities.

Often when you buy a laptop, you also purchase a docking station, keybord, speakers, mouse, etc...and the laptop pretty much gets used as if it were a desktop.

Anyway, good look with your quest! Hope this was helpful!

Laptop????

I'm a senior in high school looking for a laptop. I mainly use my computer to download ALOT of music and watch movies. I don't play computer games but would like to have a computer that can handle alot of things at once. The only other thing is I would like to use the laptop to also do some schoolwork and stuf like that on word, and powerpoint, etc. Price isn't really a factor, as long as the price is under $2000. I'm thinking of getting a mac but im not sure yet cuz ive never had a mac before.

Thanks in advance

Answer
Hey,
I was interested for the same kind of laptop and ended up getting an HP. I'm actually using it now, and it's really amazing. Take a look at the sites below. They're really fast and powerful, have tons of storage, and are really cheap considering other laptops. Try the HP dv2500. Also in the links below is a link to the HP website. If you want to buy, go there and customize one just like you want it. I also recommend going to CNET Reviews (the link is below) and checking out the reviews, not only for the HP, but for other laptops.

As for going for a Mac, they are popular with a lot of teens nowadays. There are a lot of things I find fault with, though. First, you don't get all the bang for your buck. You can definitely get a more powerful computer with more storage space from another company. Not only that, but your iPod will work just as well! Next, there is a lot less software available for Macs. When you head to college, there may be special software you need for your courses that may not run on Macs. Finally, Vista is kind of controversial now as an operating system, but I'm using it right now on my HP and it works like a charm. It looks great too--better than XP, anyway.

All in all, you probably need 160 GB+ for movies and music, and definitely 1 GB+ (go for 2 GB if you can) of RAM--don't even consider anything less with Vista. You may want to go for a smaller hard drive and buy an external drive. They're easier to take around, and there is less trouble if anything breaks. I recommend the Western Digital MyBook, either with 500GB or 1TB if you have tons of music. If you need something portable, still go with Western Digital. In my opinion, they're sleeker, faster, and more reliable. If weight is not a consideration on the laptop, 17" screens are the best in my opinion, though mine has a 14.1" screen. Although I love HP now, Sony makes great laptops too--check them out (the site is below).

I'm starting a 4-year communications program next year and am in the market for a laptop. What's the best one I can get that has a screen under 15 inches and weighs less than 6 pounds? Are there any features or software I should definitely make sure to get?
Also, I'd prefer it to be less than $1,000 CDN.

Answer
Should I buy a laptop or a desktop?

"There are so many options available today when buying a new PC, it can all get quite confusing," concedes . One of the bigger decisions is whether to purchase a portable laptop computer or a stationary desktop PC, as each has its distinct advantages.

Compare size vs. portability
Desktop computers usually come with a vertical chassis, referred to as a tower, which typically sits on the floor under a desk. A monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers are all attached to the tower separately.

Laptop computers, on the other hand, are small, battery-powered, lightweight (usually between five and seven pounds) and ideal for those who require portability, such as businesspeople who travel or university students who could then easily move from a dorm room to a library to a lecture hall to a café. With a DVD player, laptops can also be used as portable entertainment systems.

Unlike a desktop setup, all accessories are integrated into the laptop (mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc.) but external ones may be attached, as well. The prices for these accessories are about the same for both laptop and desktop PCs.

It should be mentioned that many of today's laptops come equipped with integrated wireless networking features (like IBM notebook PCs with ThinkVantage technologies) so that users can tap into a high-speed Internet connection. The PC user must be in the range of a compatible wireless network, known as a hotspot, which is available at some hotels, airport lounges, school campuses, cafés, and more. For more on hotspots, see Hook up to a wireless hotspot.

Desktop computers usually come with a wired network card, but wireless cards can be purchased for as low as $50.

Determine how much power and memory you need
A few years ago, there was no comparison between a desktop and laptop computer when it came to processing powerâdesktops won hands-down for speed and performance.

Because of advancements in processing technology, and an increase in the amount of RAM for mobile video cards, laptop computers now rival desktops in performance.

For example, Intel's Mobile Pentium 4 processor can power the latest computer games, while manufacturers like nVidia and ATI create high-end video cards for laptops.

Of course, laptops that can run sophisticated programs like PC games are considerably more expensive than regular laptops and are usually bigger and heavier. As such, souped-up laptops are often referred to as "desktop replacements" as they're less portable than other laptops.

Because there is little difference in performance between desktop and laptop computers, both should be able to handle common tasks such as checking e-mail, Web surfing, word processing, playing music, and photo editing. More powerful PCs can handle computer games and DVD movie playback (note: DVD-ROM drive required).

Factor in the price
Desktop computers are less expensive than laptop computers. For example, Dell has desktop PCs that begin at about $399, compared to its cheapest laptop at $599.

The price difference is because a laptop's components are much smaller, usually more expensive to manufacture, and more time-consuming to build into the final product.

Computer buyers on a budget should opt for an Intel Celeron processor, available for both desktop and laptop PCs. These CPUs take longer to process instructions, which results in slower performance than Pentium 4 chips, but are just fine for most tasks including e-mail, word processing, Web surfing, and using home finance and educational software.

Evaluate upgradeability and repair options
Components in a desktop computer are easier to upgrade than those in a laptop. Repairing a desktop PC is also a lot simpler.

Let's first address upgradeability. Until recently, laptop users were not able to upgrade any of the machine's components because it couldn't be openedâwhat you bought was what you bought. Some savvy users were able to add more RAM, but that was about it.

This remains true today except for higher-end gaming laptops that let users upgrade the video card whenever faster ones become available. Companies such as Alienware allow gamers to do this themselves, while Dell's XPS gaming laptops require a technician.

With desktop computers, users can easily swap components at the back of the tower (via the PCI or AGP slots), including sound cards and modems. More RAM, a bigger hard drive, or a new DVD drive are also easy to add to a desktop computer.

Another advantage to desktop computers is the ability to add a new monitor, like a 21-inch screen from a 15-inch screen, or a flat-panel LCD display from a bulky CRT monitor.

When it comes to repair, it normally costs more to fix a laptop than a desktop because, as previously mentioned, components are smaller and therefore tend to be more time-consuming. In fact, some repair shops will only work on desktop computers. That said, manufacturers usually offer similar warranties for laptops and desktops and will often handle the repairs themselves.

In the end decided on a desktop.

"Because Patrick needs to play high-end games, and because we want the option to purchase a big monitor, we're going to go with a desktop computer," he says. "My son also finds the keyboards are much easier to use on a desktop computer than the fixed ones on laptops."

What is the best laptop to buy for a student attending college in the fall of 2011?

Dillon Ben

My parents are letting me get a laptop before college. I can spend up to $1000. Maybe a few more hundred. What would be the best bang for my buck?
I was looking at the Macbook Pro but I would only be able to afford the 13". I dont know if this is too small or not.

Answer
Haters gonna hate but i would honestly recommend a macbook pro, this laptop is reliable, wont ever die, has specs that will cover your needs, and if you have a problem, Apple has the best customer support in the business. It is well worth the money. If the MacBook pro is too pricey, a standard MacBook will do just fine.

edit: I have the base 13" model and I think it is the perfect size. It is light and portable and the battery will last me around 7 hours.

The larger display for your eyes. I bet in two months that you will want to uninstall Norton and get Kaspersky or Eset. If you never owned a laptop, I give you one month before you drop or spill liquids on it which will turn it into garbage material.

i am gonna recommend this laptop. it will work just fine for you.however,i would go to your college IT department and see if they will install win 7 for you free or a small fee(like ten bucks), win 8 is a disaster and you dont want to have to deal with the issues, as far as that laptop, the processor is a year older than the processor in the laptop i recommended,. in addition, the laptop you recommended is dual core, the one i recommended is quad core. quad core is better for multi tasking,as in having multiple programs and tabs within programs. contact me if you need more help. jdbj32m@yahoo.com

Answer
Allow me to save some space and links by not repeating a lot of the same information.
In this answer, I discussed and linked to information about CPU, graphics, and quality:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ApSwGG9oDuTpL8HKJPkxp5Lty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20130829113645AAdBKCH
That is despite whether a person's favorite brand is considered good or bad. Truth gets a thumbs down every now and then.
Rescuecom issues occassional industry quality reports, and PCWorld does an annual survey.
Within a laptop brand, they have their own tiers.
High to low
Lenovo Thinkpad and then Ideapad and then Essentials
HP Probook, Elite, Envy, and then Pavilion
Dell has Latitude, XPS and Precision as their good ones, and then Inspiron.
All Acer-Gateway is questionable
Sony cheap laptops are not good but their expensive ones are OK
Samsung's new ATIV 2 is their new consumer low end, but the rest of the product line is generally excellent.
Asus is simple to understand, the more they cost, the better they are. Their under $400 is low grade, but as you go up in price they do a better construction.
Toshiba business line is excellent, but Satellites are not rated well.

In Photography, you should try to afford a 1080p display.
You need to offer a price point and whether battery life and weight are important factors.
If you can afford it, Lenovo Y510p with a 1080p display at about $1000 is impressive.
Google Lenovo Student Portal, and Lenovo Barnes and Noble Gold for a small discount.
$655 (plus tax in CA, TN, NJ) for a Sony with a low voltage i5 and 1080p display would be nice

Even though only HD 4000, the 1080p display is a big plus to photography.
If trying to go as cheap as possible but still good, look for a Samsung with i5-3210M, and a decent graphics card would be a big bonus.
$580 Samsung - No optical drive

Which laptop should I get for college?

Prominence

I'm going to be a pre-med student next year and was looking for other opinions. Which one:
1. HP Envy 15 (2012 version)
2. Dell XPS 15z
3. Samsung Series 7 chronos
4. Sony Vaio SE series

Answer
Ignore Apache's ridiculous answer. I am looking at the specifications of each laptop independently and will respond shortly with the most sensible choice, followed by a reasoned explanation.
"Go for Dell or Sony"... FFS...

EDIT:
Sorry, what you've provided in your question is not enough to tell which ones you are considering. There are at least 2 versions of the HP Envy 15, and 3 versions of the Dell XPS 15z.

However, I made comparisons of the lowest-spec versions of each of those to the other machines in your list.

I have seen the HP Envy 15 available for around the £650 mark, but from ambiguous sources. If you can pick one up for this price, rather than the £1000 I have seen elsewhere, then it is by far the best value. However, if this is not the case, then the lowest-spec Dell XPS 15z is the best choice.

As a medical student, I can't imagine how you will need much more power than what the lowest-speced machines will provide.

Both the Samsung Series 7 Chronos and the Sony Vaio SE series are very overpriced for the specs that they have. They are priced for branding and design, not practicality or power.

best brand of laptop for college student?

DUNG V N

i have a budget of $800 or under. i need a laptop designed for everyday use like typing essays, web surfing, music download, and creating videos and sending pictures and watching movies.
i also dont want it to be really heavy and i want a long battery life with memory at least 2gb or more
any suggestions? are there any brands i should avoid?

Answer
Dell Inspiron 15, HPdv6t, would be my top choices. The two top sellers can be customized from their respective sites. All the top brands are made at the same factories in Taiwan, Compal and Quanta. More a matter of price and personal choice.

Answer
Whilst apparently I am now an uninformed old person and/or teenage girl, I am also not going to be a "typical Mac person" by saying ooh ooh get the Mac.

I'm going to keep this short, and sweet, and purely from collective experience of the past five years of my career:

If you want to switch to Mac, ignore the 13" MacBook Pro. Go straight for the 15". The faster processor, larger screen, actual graphics card instead of the Intel Integrated chipset, make it well worth the extra price.

If you want to stick with PC, by all means do so, and that specification sounds great. Just please, don't buy HP. HP are like Ford. Fix Or Repair Daily. Buy a Dell, or Toshiba, or... well maybe not a Sony, with the same specifications as above, and you will have one hell of a machine.

Ultimately though, it comes down to what you want to do with the laptop. If playing games pops up in the top five things you're going to do, stick with PC, unless the other top four things are video, audio or graphics editing. There is a reason why Macs are used predominately in the arts industries. Remember though, you don't need a superpowered laptop just to write essays.

One final note, *really*, a 17" screen with a resolution as low as 1600x900? That's ... ow. If you're going with a 17" laptop computer, make sure the resolution is AT LEAST 1860x1050, or you're going to hurt your eyes trying to use it. 1860x1050 is usually a standard for 15" displays these days.

Anyway, that became a bit of a ramble, please excuse me. I hope I've been of some help.

I was wondering if the Microsoft Home and Student 2011 can work for a Window 7?

How is the Dell Studio 15 laptop for a college student?

Ty

I am looking at laptops for college and have come across the Dell Studio 15 which looks pretty good. Does anyone know if this is a good laptop for college students? I will be a business major who is also obtaining prerequisites for medical school if that helps.

Answer
ok heres the breakdown:

Macs vs. PC's

You'll definately want a PC no doubt because Macs cause all sorts of problems with compatability (the last thing you'll ever want to encounter when handing in your thesis that was written on your Mac and deemed unreadable by your professor's PC). Macs are easier to use but are also just that much more uselessly expensive. You can get a PC for 1/3 of the price that apple offers at the same level of performance.

I own the studio 15 laptop. One major drawback is that its fan is quite noisy. Its not loud enough for anybody to hear it in the library, but its enough to possibly bug you if youre alone in your dorm room and are the sort of person who has pet peeves like that. However, its performance is excellent, and its design is also interesting. It is a rather heavy laptop, especially when the 9 cell battery is in place. As far as college goes, this baby is more than capable of handling your needs with or without upgrading, although i would highly recommend upgrading the hard drive, memory, and processor if you plan on doing more than email, word processing, internet, and music.

One thing i would recommend is to make SURE you buy the accidental warranty plan. It may be because i have been a bit too careless with my laptop, but the studio 15 is a rather fragile laptop. the body on it has been notorious for falling off (the screen, although this is rather uncommon) and the buttons on the side may malfunction. Overall, it will last, but I would rather be on the safe side than have a broken laptop the night before your presentation... mine is in the shop right now, and good thing for that warranty or else i would have to cough up like 500 bucks and its not even major damage.

please consider other brands, ESPECIALLY lenovo idea/thinkpads and sony vaios. i would buy them over the studio 15 because of the drawbacks and the customer service at dell (mine got delayed shipping for about 7 weeks) but it is not a bad laptop at all.

***EDIT*** in response to the mac user above: however long the computer lasts depends entirely on the user. MACS DO GET VIRUSES! they are simply less common because the vast majority (95%) of consumers on the market are all using windows NOT the joke of an operating system tiger/leopard/cheetah/lion/grizzly bear/puma/ or w/e wild animal you wanna throw in there. the aluminum case has been known to get dented easily, eventually leading to hardware failure. i am not familiar with mac support as users are usually much more careful with them because of their pricey nature, but i assume it cannot be worse than dell's. think of it this way though; if you dont break your laptop, you wont need customer service or warranty for the matter of fact. you're choice

Help on purchase laptop connect card for college student?

Roamer

I'm buying a laptop connect card. There are so many choices in the market that make me confuse. Which laptop connect card is better? Why? How much is cost you per month? I'm a college student, I need a reasonable monthly fees.

Answer
Laptops come with wifi and ethernet, so I assume you're talking about a cellphone-type adapter. Which one is best depends on where you're going to be going to college. The service is about the same from one company to another - it's the coverage that matters. (The best service is no good to you id you have to walk across the campus to find a spot to use it.)

Look at the coverage maps for all the companies that cover the area, and make sure that they have *solid* coverage where you want it - not that you'll be near an edge of their coverage. (Coverage doesn't drop off the way it looks on the map - it gets weaker and weaker until, at the edge of what they call "coverage" it drops to "unusable".) Check the plans and prices of the ones that cover where you want. Choose one that you like.

(Internet connections is in the 200kbps-300kbps range [for a strong signal] regardless of the company or the technology.)

Laptop Decision: Macbook 13" Pro 2012 or Macbook 13" Air 2012?

football64

Macbook Pro 2012 or Macbook Air 2012?

I am a college student and have been waiting for an Apple Macbook for awhile and I guess these are the newest laptops, so can you help me choose?
- Size is not a big deal, just needs to fit nicely in backpack.
- Prices are similar for students
- I am not careless, but still a college student.

Macbook Pro 2012: ($1,099)
13-inch: 2.5 GHz
2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
4GB 1600MHz memory (upgrade 8GB = $90)
500GB 5400-rpm hard drive1 (upgrade 128GB flash storage1 = $180)
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Built-in battery (7 hours)2

vs.

Macbook Air 2012 ($1,149)
13-inch : 128GB
1.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor
Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz
4GB memory
128GB flash storage1
Intel HD Graphics 4000

Help, please?

THE AIR HAS A NICE SCREEN AND IT COMES WITH FLASH STORAGE http://lifehacker.com/5793366/is-ssd-worth-it-performance-tests-with-macbook-pro

Answer
If you want more processing power, go with the Macbook Pro. If you want lighter weight, go with the Macbook Air. I am looking at making a similar decision. I am probably going to so with the Macbook Pro and I'll probably upgrade to an SSD later on when the prices drop. The Macbook Air is not upgradeable. I usually use my laptop at my desk at home and occasionally take it places. If I were carrying it a lot, I would probably so with the lighter Macbook Air.

Answer
macintosh

they are great for art students but terrible for everything else.

I'm an interior design student and I'm confused on which laptop to buy?? I MAC the best for design?

kassem

Answer
Yes a Mac is what you want. Don't be seduced by "specs" which are meaningless in isolation and are just used as a marketing ploy by companies producing bland generic computers that use bland generic operating systems to lure buyers who do not have a clue what they want so assume bigger numbers equal a better computer. As Apple produce both the operating system and the hardware they can optimise their systems to give the best performance for the price.

You do not specify what kind of "design" you mean but in general a Mac will serve you well. Autodesk find that over 80% of students studying design related subjects are using a Mac.

What is a college laptop for a college student?

AbrenicaRu

I'm heading off to college in a couple of weeks and I've been browsing for laptops that I can use when I'm in college. I'm mainly going to use it for social networking (facebook, twitter, etc.), doing schoolwork like typing up essays & doing research. And downloading songs too. What would be a good laptop for that? I'm leaning towards HP or Dell. And something affordable, between maybe $500-800.

Answer
I've got a Dell laptop, and I haven't had any problems with it. And my laptop is my lifeline to school since I moved in the middle of last semester (I'm finishing my degree through distance ed). I did my research before I bought it (well, okay, my husband who does computer stuff for the government did the research, and I just paid for it). Because of the research, I knew that there were issues with the webcam, so my husband was able to take care of that when he got my laptop going.I knew that I wasn't going to be doing any gaming on my computer, so I didn't have to worry about getting the best graphics thingy. I think I spent $700 on my computer. I got the best one I could afford in my price range. Check out review sites and consumer reports, and you should be able to get reviews on the computers you are looking at.

HP Laptops?

axeps2

Does anyone know if HP laptops are reliable and good computers. If not, what would you say is the best laptop for a college student.

Answer
Consumer Reports' June issue has reviews of laptops. You could visit their website and see if there's any helpful info in the free portion of the site. (www.consumerreports.org.) You might consider subscribing to the online magazine... year-round there's lots of good informaton.

CNET.com is also a good place to check for editor's reviews and picks.

We're a family of Dells and IBMs (now Lenevo) and have been reasonably happy with both.

Consumer Reports' "QUICK PICKS" for PCs indicated the following "BEST VALUES" --

Best values:
Toshiba Satellite A135-S4427 $900
Acer Aspire AS5610-4537 $850

Both are very good overall, among the lightest Windows laptops, with very good ergonomics and average battery life. Toshibaâs reliability and tech support are undistinguished; we donât have enough data to rate Acerâs.

IN THE FULL ratings, the two HPs they rated were on the bottom end of the scale, but not ranked so significantly behind the others that you wouldn't consider them. Here's a comment they made about the HPs and why they scored a bit lower...

The HPs that scored Good had a few drawbacks. Their glossy touchpads werenât centered with the keyboard and fingers didnât glide smoothly across. Also, their cases required two hands to open and batteries were inconvenient to remove. They also ran warmer than average.

GOOD LUCK!

what kind of laptop is good for electrical engineering students?

Answer
I survived University (graduated '06) with a desktop running office 97.

You really only need to type, and run the occasional spreadsheet. An equation editor (in Word) is sufficient.

Of course, if you've got courses using Visual Studio, Matlab, or some variation of Spice, and wish to do work at home instead of a computer lab, choose according to your software specs. Having something with a VGA output is good for giving oral presentations too.

im electrical engineering student in jimma university Ethiopia.now im 3rd year bu have no laptop . soneed lapt?

walde

my department difficult can not manage without laptop .my family can not buy the laptop for me,please who can help me?

Answer
Laptops are nice to have, but not necessary to complete your engineering course.

millions of people went through electrical engineering without laptops, before PCs were invented, including me. There were no small hand-held calculators until after I was in college. I, and others, used slide rules.

You may well find someone to donate you a laptop, but if not, have confidence. You can make it as millions before.

Good luck in finding one.

how long will it last

Answer
i wouldnt buy it. the processor speed and the graphics are weak. and you want to buy something that gives you more flexibility down the line. you may need the CD drive,i have used my cd drive several times in the last three years of college.you may also take a course for a class, like a science course, that requires a demanding program(say in biology, one that helps you dissect an animal) and you find you need a more powerful graphics card. and touch screen is bad.its just like a car. power locks are cool, but as compared to traditional windows its more likely to break.so not only is there a bigger chance of breaking, you also have to clean the screen often to avoid bacteria problems. if you want something small and portable. i would recommend a 13 inch laptop for about the same price..contact me if you need more help. jdbj32m@yahoo.com

Can somebody give me help and tips on how to teach Fashion Drawing to young fashion design students, please???

bongcs

I was tasked to teach Basic Fashion Drawing and Advanced Fashion Illustration to a group of college students taking up a course in Fashion Design. I am very well known in our community as very skilled in fashion illustration; that is the reason why I was tapped to teach on this subject.

The problem is: this is my first time to teach or be a teacher. Although, I do already have ideas on what to do... I'm still a little nervous and somewhat worried. I know that I'm still an amateur fashion teacher, because that is indeed the fact! But, I also wish that I will be able to pull it off without looking a bit amateur.

Can anybody here give me teaching ideas, methods, or tips, please??? I sure would like to read suggesstions and recommendations! All of your help will definitely be fully appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer
Start on introducing yourself and then the students to each other..

Then, state the significance of fashion design and how it is perceived around the world..

Show a little bit of history of design especially during ancient times, pre and post Spanish until now, and indigenous people fashion designs.. Be quick about it so you don't bore them.. It might be better if you have illustrations or a projector where you can show power point presentations from your laptop..

Then, start with the basics of color combinations, then matching clothes and fabrics.. Also state what to wear and colors and so forth for each season, rainy and summertime.. You can also tell them the variations during different occassions and how conservatism and new age designs work..

Goodluck..

is this a good laptop for a college student?

Lacey

Fujitsu B Ultraportable

Answer
well, like other similar question, the answer is depend on the user needs. If the laptop is suitable for you and fulfill your needs than it is a good laptop.
I read a little about this laptop and I think this laptop designed for business. If it's me, chosing laptop is about fashion. The performance is second, because sometimes you can buy another laptop with similar performance at cheaper price but in the model you don't like.
Fujitsu Ultraportable is great laptop. Small size but have the power you need under the hood.
Like I said earlier, if you like it and can afford it, than it good for you.

Best laptop for college student who wants to play online games?

Kat S

My parents are going to get me a laptop as a graduation present, not so much of a major budget. So, besides the basic needs as a college student, I have some things that are important to me in a laptop: (why does that sound like a love ad???)
My list of needs:
- Windows
- Some form of Word (I'm a writer)
- I want to play online RPGs, eventually join my BF playing WoW
- music
- DvD player
- Regular Internet Surfing/Yahoo chat
- NOT Apple/MAC

Any suggestions?
generally, putting it together sounds like a LOT of work :/

Answer
Any new laptop with a video card that uses dedicated memory (a X4/6XX model) sounds like it would suit your needs.

Brand buying advice

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down.

Choose wisely.

Suggestions for a laptop for college?

Daniela(:

I'm looking to buy a laptop for college this fall preferably one under $500. I want a lightweight laptop with a CD/DVD drive and webcam in order to do assignments, watch movies, videochat/skype, and browse the web. I've looked into HP, Dell, and Lenovo but I'm open to all brands. Thank you in advance!

Answer
Here are two HP but they do not have DVD. You can always get an external one.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. Lenovo will not allow people to read instruction on how to access the BIOS menu or to get info on their puters on their web site unless you connect to them thru Facebook. They do this so they can spy on their users. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

shoudl i buy a mac book air or pro?

Q. hello . i am planning on buying either mackbook air or mackbook pro laptop . so help me out here a little bit . i can buy a mac till $2,000 .thats my budget .i will buy it in dubai when i go to turkey for studies.on my i will stay in dubai . from that you can guess that i am a university student planning to do MBA .i am fond of downloading movies and watching them .( legally ) and also i watch movies from dvds and also do my university day to day work . . i am also fond of listening songs. and my main aim to use this laptop is for my studies while living in a turkey university . so plz give me your ideas to make me reach a decision. just to give you an idea i have bought microsoft office for mac 2011 home and student edition in advance so i dont face any problem xD .thank you in advance
there is nothing wrong with my query . people who have problem could f*** themselves .

Answer
I would go for a mac book pro. The Air's are very nice and thin and light but that is because they don't have a DVD/CD drive in them. They only have one USB port so no good if you plan on plugging a few things in.
Watching movies etc will look the same on both, you just can't put a dvd in an Air.
The pro's are obviously a bit bigger, but you can connect them to more, and play CD's/DVD's on them.

Just curious: Which MacBook should i get?

Dina

im not in college yet, im a student, i do sooooo many activities its not even funny i have a hard time staying organized so i was thinking of getting a macbook that can keep me organized so i can do my homework on it (cuz im always doing homework at track meets or other afterschool activities and barely get any sleep trying to finish) :(

..anyways im a girl if that makes a difference..

i want to get either the Macbook Pro or the Macbook Air, i just dont know which one is better,, what do you think? something portable would be nice cuz im always doing school stuff on the go (in the car, at soccer games, while babysitting, etc) so im wondering which one would you suggest- Pro or Air? it needs to have good battery power and can stay on standby for long periods of time, and to me it doesnt really matter about how the Air is like 3lbs, isnt the Pro just as portable? i just want the one that has better quality and better features :) thx!

btw dont say get other laptops, this question is specifically for macbooks, cuz i need to be able to facetime others while im doing homework instead of just aim or facetiming on my ipod touch or something cuz that gets really annoying thx :)

Answer
It heavily depends on how much you're willing to spend and if you can do without certain features. For example, the 13" MBP has a DVD drive for watching movies, installing apps of CD's, etc.

MBA is very light, and easy to store in a bag. Only down side is that it doesn't have a DVD drive. You'll either have to connect it over network to another computer with a DVD drive if you want to install something, or buy an external DVD drive for it.

Having said that, I think that MBA would probably suit you best. It just depends on whether you want the 11" or 13" model. As for typing papers, I recommend you get a copy of Microsoft Office 2011 instead of iWork, because Office is a more widely used software package of the two (most computer users have Windows and Office) so there will be less compatibility issues (even though iWork is compatible with Office files).

How do scholarships and student loans pay students?

Jordan

I could easily pay for tuition + room and board through scholarships because of the scholarships are pretty good in my state and at the college. My problem is I can't pay for the other things like a laptop, books, etc....well I could but it depends on how scholarships pay out. Are they (and loans) paid directly to the student most of the time or directly to the school???

Answer
They usually pay to the school first. Then the school applies your aid to your bill and refunds to you the amount that's over your aid. Some aid (not often) pays directly to the student and it's up to you to pay the school. Some is also paid after-the-fact, you pay tuition and fees, take and pass the class, then the aid reimburses your costs. Most though is paid directly to your school and then the school releases it to you.

Many forms of aid have a timeline for when your school can release it though - it's not usually first day of classes or even before. Many schools won't release aid for a first semester freshman until many weeks into the semester.

Very many colleges will allow you to use your financial aid overages in the campus bookstore for textbook purchases on account and will add it to your tuition bill. They then reduce your financial aid refund by that amount and pay your bookstore bill too.

It's a very common scenario though for new students to need to come up with significant cash before their first semester in order to get the whole process started. Some of us suggest that the very best solution to that problem is a $500 secured credit card which you use to cover those needs in the beginning of each semester and then pay off when financial aid releases.

ADD: yes, they do give financial aid for laptops et al. Those are school supplies in the modern world. Further, in 2012 when average tuition and fees at even a state university often exceeds $20K per year - there aren't very many 18 year-olds paying their own full way by working anymore. That stopped being possible when tuition started costing more than 18 year-olds can earn working.

Do Mac Laptops retain their value well?

Em

I am looking at investing in a macbook air (june 2012, 13.3inch) for my final year of uni - I already have a desktop computer but need something small and reliable to take into uni with me for lectures and uni work. I was wondering if they hold their value well - so if I found I no longer needed it a year later when I finish uni, would I be able to get most of my money back?

I also get a 15% discount for being a university student, so the £1000 model will actually cost £823 (after 3% quidco cashback aswell)

Or would it be better to buy the slightly older model second hand already?

Answer
It'll devalue + it's going to be used.

You'll probably get <= 60% of your money back.

What kind of laptop should I get (im a college student)?

Jazz

I am a college student and my old laptop is dead!
I need a laptop that will not break my bank. Something thats no more than 500 dollars.
I am an English Education major and I mostly use my computer to write essays and make power points. I am not a big gamer and I dont dowload a lot of music.
Should I get 3gb with 320mb or is that too much, or too little. I dont know what I am doing lol.
I prefer a screen thats 16 or 17 inches but if its a nice computer I will settle for 15 but nothing less.

Answer
Laptops at Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=32&name=Laptops-Notebooks

You won't find anything larger than 15.6" in your price range, unless you happen upon a good recertified model. There are plenty of inexpensive netbooks, but they all have small screens.

3GB RAM is a good choice (maybe your only option at this range). You likely won't fill a hard drive with the work you're going to be doing.

Ask around your school if they have some sort of laptop financial aid.

What is the best kind of laptop for a college student?

I am in my senior year of high school and I am looking to buy a laptop for college this fall. I don't need a high-tech one with all these special gadgets, just one for internet and typing papers and such. One that will last for 4 years. I'm not very tech-savvy, so I really have no idea what I'm supposed to be looking for in a laptop. Suggestions are greatly appreciated...thanks!
I would like to keep the price under $700 by the way.

Answer
I think laptop with great design, light and sleek would be best for you. Acer Aspire TimelineX has a sleek design with thickness just about 1". It also has Intel Core i3-370M which would be fine with everyday usage. It's also very portable ,weigh about 4 pounds, and has long battery life as long as 8 hrs. You'll find more info from the source below.

Inexpensive laptop for college student?

mistressfa

As a single mom my budget is stretched thin with my daughter going to college. She needs a laptop that is reliable and durable but inexpensive. I am looking at Acers as they have several well rated but low cost units. But would love more feedback.

Answer
The Dell E1505. Inexpensive but with the latest dual core intel processor she will need and all the basics. Acers have poor screens and support problems.

The Dell is now on sale at under $800. If you want to go basic with a Celeron buy the Compaq C501 for $469.
