Best laptop for Graphic Design student?

blueyedang

What would be the best kind of laptop for me going into a graphic design major? I need a laptop that will be able to keep up with the major programs I will need to use including Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator on top of Microsoft Office.

Answer
do not believe the statement that says "most design programs use mac" or "mac shows true colors"
they are NOT true and are biased

i have noticed that kind of answers from very young graphic designers that believe that anything that is trendy is the only solution. i actually remeber reading something a designer wannabe posted somplace that said smth like "i do design, so its just mac for me, windows doesn`t have it, sorry"

that is brainwashing, sorry! ALL the design softwares work perfectly fine on Windows (those that matter would be the Adobe Suite, QuarkXpress & corel), just check their websites. Quark was the only one designed for MAC, and by that time most newspapers switched to mac, because PageMaker wasn`t so advanced. But ever since PageMaker became InDesign, that reason exists no more. However, mac gained a "title" as being "design oriented" (mostle because all design agencies owned macs...) and guess what, mac users are conservative too ;)

look at this statistics: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_os.asp
i wouldn`t say that 85% windows users compare to ~8% MAC users, would they? there must be a resons ppl still choose windows, right?

as for the laptop question:
try to find one with a good processor (intel core 2 duo or above), 4GB RAM at least, an Nvidia video card & a screen resolution as big as possible (1600x1200 or more if you can find). Brand doesn`t really matter.

Good luck

What is the best laptop for a art and design student?

Q. Cant be to expensive.. :)

Answer
As I have recommended to other art/design students, a tablet PC is your best choice. They are a bit more expensive than typical laptops, but they are worth every penny. They function perfectly as a normal laptop, but can also double as your sketch pad or note pad, and completely replace conventional paper notebooks and binders.

Here are what I recommended to other people:

The Axiotron Modbook is a Mac-based tablet PC: http://axiotron.com/index.php?id=modbook

The HP TX2000 series are nice, semi-powerful, small little tablets: http://h20247.www2.hp.com/hho/cache/5725...

The ASUS R1 series are powerful, medium-sized tablets: http://event.asus.com/2006/nb/r1/eng/

Lenovo X series are portable and generous on the battery life, but lack a bit in the processing power department: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/notebooks/thin...

Hope this helps.
