Info about US colleges?

Isabella

Hey! I am currently writing a novel on my computer, just out of fun. And in the novel, the characters go to Dartmouth college. I don't live in the US (but planning to go there in a few years). Anyway, so I have almost no knowledge about the colleges in the US. Don't worry, the novel isn't based around their college life, it's simply just part of the story and is mentioned here and there. Kind of like 'she walked around campus after her Calculus class and..." blah blah blah. So I have a few questions-
1. Can you walk around campus- like Dartmouth has quite a lot of facilities like centers, museums and etc (from the research i've done on it). Since it's part of the college campus im assuming, can you then just walk through the facilities and stuff in-between classes and break-times (if they have that)
2. Ok, so I have NO idea what 'majors', 'masters', 'under-graduate' and all of those things mean- so how does the exam system work?
3. How many subjects can you choose (maximum)? And, if you can choose whatever amount then, say what if a girl chooses four subjects and a boy chooses seven subjects, will the boy then have to stay in college for longer to finish all his lessons before going home or whatever.? (because in the novel, the characters live in apartments near the college, not actually in rooms provided in and by the college).
4. What subjects will you have to study for the following careers: A. Business Manager, B.Architect, C.Human-rights Lawyer, D.Fashion Designer.?
5. Do they have educational trips in college? E.g. Going to an museum trip with your archeology class or something.
6. Do you go on a college visit when your in senior year at high school just to see if you like the college or not?
7. when is a good time to apply for college? (in the summer vacation after Senior year of high school, or after/before that?).
8. Does college have exams at the end of every year? (its a four-year college). And do they have proms?
9. What kinds of events do you go to when you're in college? Do they have like a party or celebration for events like Easter, X-mas, Fourth of July, and etc?
Thanks for answering these looong questions, lol. Also if you have any movie or book suggestions with information on US college systems, then please let me know. And this novel isn't something that im definitely planning to publish, it's just a story that I write whenever i'm bored and on the laptop- nothing serious, though so far I think it's actually quite good. even though their college life doesn't play a basis in the story, I just mention it here and there- though I still don't want to write something about the college, and then it just makes no sense! Thanks anyway :-)

Answer
Wow! I hate to tell you this, but since you have no idea how US colleges work, I think you would be better off to place the location of your novel someplace where you know something about. 1) Dartmouth is in New Hampshire where it snows a lot and classes are mostly during the winter so they do not walk around as much as someplace like UCLA in southern California. 2) A major is what you are studying i.e. if you want to be an engineer you would take engineering as a major. A masters is the second degree you can earn at college. The first is a BA, second a Masters and third is a Phd. Undergraduate means you have not yet earned a BA. 3) You generally take 15 units a semester which would often be 5 classes of 3 units each. You could study in the library or at home. Very few people stay on campus for all of their studying.4) In all cases the first 2 years of college are generally what are called general education classes where everyone studies English, Math, Sciences, Foreign language. The last 2 years of college you study your major. So a) would take classes in business b) an architect would have to go to architectural college c) all law is a post graduate course so you would have to have a BA and then go to law school. d) Fashion designer- many do not go to a regular college but one that specializes in fashion. 5) Rarely are there trips in college except in cases such as mineralogy where you might go hunting for minerals. That is the only college trip I ever took. You probably would not go to a museum unless it was on campus. 6. some students visit the college their senior year. Many do not. I did not. 7. Applications for Fall 2012 are open now and the deadline for some is November 30 of your senior year. Others are much later. It would be too late to apply for the fall semester if you waited until summer after you senior year. 8. You have usually one or two mid terms and a final every semester. 9. Large colleges do not usually have proms but many organizations have dances. 10. Holidays are not usually celebrated on campus. Good luck!

Do federal loans immediately go towards your tuition, or can you use the loan for a laptop instead?

I want to buy a laptop for college (not 2012, but 2013 (I'm planning a year early), and I don't know if I will have to use the federal loan for tuition or if I can use it for a laptop instead and just have the college I go to put more private loans into my financial package for college so I won't have to pull out a private loan myself.

Also, can I receive a federal loan after my financial package for college is already put together? I'm afraid of private loans since they lead to massive debt.
Okay you idiots, I am trying to get a job, but I don't have transportation, the bus system is crap, and there are no job openings in urban California, especially not for teenagers. So please stop with the "just get a job" crap because there are no jobs that I can get. I'm going to have to wait until college before I can get an on-campus job. There's a reason why college graduates aren't able to get jobs anymore, and it's because there are no jobs. We're not living in 2006 anymore where everything is lovely and jobs are reqdily available due to a booming economy.

Answer
Also schools do not add private loans to your financial aid package. You must apply for them all by yourself and must have a credit worthy cosigner. Federal loans are the majority of financial aid packages for most students.

Do not plan on using student loan money for a laptop. Get a job now and start saving and you'll have more than enough for a laptop by the end of this school year.
