Laptop for a gaming college student around 1500?

David M

I'm trying to help my brother find a laptop for around $1,500 with a few specifications that are difficult to find together so I'm wondering what people here have to say and maybe if anyone can help.

I'm looking for something with a screen from 14.6 to + inches, with a minimum duel core 2.8Ghz processor 2 GB of ram but preferably 4GB +, 7200 harddrive - what ever size he can get an external if its cost beneficial, and then this is the big kicker - at LEAST 256 mb graphics (gaming) card. - i like GeForce but its hard this is where im having the most trouble

Also 4 year service plans and such things as that are prefered as hes going to college next year so you can include that as a discount (college student) - i know there are other discounts but idk what he qualifies for

His college works with dell and offers the E6400 with 4 year full service plan full parts tracking ect. all for four years and can upgrade to 2.93 GHz but the video card i forget what its called exactly but its formatted for efficiency and applications as opposed to gaming and is from what I've read not great for gaming and terrible with like D3D and such.

Around 1500 . . . up to 1650 maybe idk . . . i wish he could just get a desktop but the school requires a laptop with wireless - ive looked into getting both but thats way to expensive.

Answer
Alienware and Dell XPS can kick *** but on the way, they will also kick your wallet until it screams bloody murder !

The basic configurations are , well, basic.

There are two new systems being hailed as great from (surprisingly) HP, they are called the HDX 16 and the HDX 18.

Check out these reviews about them:

And now, go look at them:

Priced from 999.99 and with a nice Quick-ship model @ $1,099.99

Priced from 1299.99 ( No Quick-ship model for this one )

Hope this helps

laptop for college student?

first year college need something fast entertaining and mobile, and most of all cheap. I just need to know the tech specs, what amount of ram, memory and type of processor would be right for someone impatient.

games, movies, music also

Answer
HDD: >200gb... strongly suggest for games, movies and music! my laptop is 200gb . and i am thinking of getting a 1tb external hdd ~_~
ram: >2gb.. game!
vga: mid range card is 8600gt.... game - movie
speed: core 2 duo 1.6 or better

i think the most important thing is speed and the screen.
w the limit budget, u can think of HP and DEll or ASUS ( Asus sounds strange rite? infacts, it is only behind Sony in Asia)
my cousin just bought a dell inspirion 1420 for about 500 (200discount) fr bestbuy. i think that's good enough, 320gb, webcam.however, the screen is a bit too low to see thing clearly. since u have to use ur laptop quite often for ur college life, I strongly suggest a clear and bright screen.

one more thing, for college, dont choose a too big screen, since the larger screen, the less battery time, and the heavier!!!

DO REMEMBER: never go to circuitcity or bestbuy, frys, office depot unless they giving a sale.. If u like, i can show u how much more expensive those brand sell things... just GOOGLE for a better price!!! besides, i usu use the www.edealinfo.com or www.nextag.com to find deal on laptop.
ok, i've written too much. good luck on a good laptop n college life:D
