what are the pre requisites to do well in ur MBA and future prospects?

naive#

i am abt to join an mba programme wd u suggest some additonal preparations that cd be done .. which wd help make
things easier for me during the course

Answer
writing out full words would really help. I am a student at UT, which has one of the VERY best MBA programs in the United States. I started towards that major but never found anything in it that really interested me. But from what I did learn, there are a few basics that you will need. First, you'll need a good laptop that has a good battery on it. At UT, it's a requirement for the business college, I don't know about other universities, but it's handy to have either way. Second, get a brochure from that University and look to see what courses they have for MBA. The top one at UT is an MBA in Logistics, but there are ones for Marketing, Management, Supply Chain Management, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, and a bunch of other ones. You can't just go in and say "I want an MBA," you have to know which direction you want to go with your MBA. I can tell you from experience that Finance and Accounting are very hard, unless you just have a natural knack for doing that. Management and Economics are easy, but the pay scale for that isn't as big as others are.

Brand buying advise

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

College Laptop Selection?

ebclcd1234

OK so I'm starting college in the fall and I am looking to get a new laptop, now obviously I will need to carry around this laptop to classes and stuff; so I'm looking from portable but I also will occasionally game (not crysis) so something with dedicated graphics would be nice.
I've pretty much narrowed my choices down to three laptops

Sony Vaio 14" Touch Screen E series
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+Geek+Squad+Certified+Refurbished+VAIO+14%26%2334%3B+Touch-Screen+Laptop+-+8GB+Memory+-+Gunmetal/Vintage+Gold/7809174.p?id=1218860883315&skuId=7809174&st=sony%20vaio%20&cp=1&lp=7 (this is the refurb option)

Samsung Series 7 ultra
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung---Series-7-Ultrabook-13.3%26%2334%3B-Touch-Screen-Laptop---4GB-Memory---128GB-Solid-State-Drive---Metal/8047065.p?id=1218863724042&skuId=8047065

Sony Vaio 13.3" s series (about $850)
3rd gen Intel® Core⢠i5-3210M (2.50GHz / 3.10GHz with Turbo Boost)
13.3" LED backlit display (1600 x 900)
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 640M LE (1GB) hybrid graphics with Intel® Wireless Display technology
500GB (7200rpm) hard drive
4GB (4GB fixed onboard + 1 open slot) DDR3-1333Mhz
Internal lithium polymer battery (4400mAh)

The sony vaio E series (first one listed) is good because it has the most power, its touch screen, most space; but it's lacking in its size (weight over 5lbs and height 1.4inches).
The samsung stands out because its thin, light, probably the best built, has an ssd, it's 1080p, and is touch screen; but it doesn't have as much storage (128gb ssd), and it also doesn't have integrated graphics.
Lastly the vaio s series is basically the middle ground, it weighs about 3.8lbs, has the integrated graphics, has 500gb hdd. It just isnt hd and doesn't have a touch screen and the design is not so desirable.

I'm just looking for some insight in choosing the best laptop out of these three for me

Where can i get a new cheap laptop for college?

Keri Adams

Im a new college student and i need a nrw good laptop. I need one tht is fast and one that can store alot of stuff. Im looking to spend around 300-400 on one. I dont want a used one. It must b new. I need some suggestions on wat brand wat to look for and where to find one. Your help is appreciated.

Answer
I'd say check bestbuy.com. They always have bundles and deals. Over december 2012, I got a dell laptop bundle for just $380!
It came with:
Laptop
Carrying Sleeve
1-year Micro Trend Anti-Virus
2-Year BestBuy Warranty
Logitech Portable USB Wireless Mouse
8GB PNY Flash Drive
*Sure the laptop doesn't look or feel amazing, but it gets work done. It powers with a 2.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Celeron CPU, 3GB Ram, and a 250HD. It has a mic and webcam built in, and the keyboard is kinda like the macbook except the keys are more rounded a bit. It came with Windows 8 (not pro) but it's enough. Anyway's I'd say check either bestbuy.com or your local store as I didn't now about the Dell Deal untill I walked in the store. (: I'm sure you can find a decent one online for $300.

Should I get Windows 8 for college? Why or why not?

I need to buy my first laptop this summer so I can go to college in the fall. Most of the market is filled with new touchscreen windows 8 laptops, but I can still get a hold of some older windows 7 devices. What do you recommend and WHY? Please be specific.

Answer
If you purchase a laptop with Windows 8 get it with a touch screen since W8 was designed to used with a touch screen. It will take you some time to learn Windows 8 but it also has a desk top mode.
I prefer Windows 7 and all prior versions of Windows to W8 personally.
A new laptop comes with a trial version of MS Office after that 30 day trial you will have to purchase the software, by and install it from a new boxed install so you have the installation disc.

Toshiba and Dell make excellent laptops.

Grammer lords I need your help.?

Boweezie10

I have typed an essay for a school I may be going to for 2013-2014 on my school's laptop using word and I spell checked and grammar checked and sent it to my mom first. She helped me revise and saw things that word did not correct and now she wants me to show my english teacher but I don't want to show my english teacher because it sounds like i'm dissing the school a bit and I don't want the teacher spreading word that I don't like the school. (I really don't much) So if you would read this nice and emotional 5 paragraph essay about why I want to become a graphic designer then see if it needs further revisions and show me what needs to be corrected I will be much obliged.

I want to be a graphic designer because of the joy other graphic designers
give me. I grew up watching cartoons most of my afternoons and I enjoyed them
like any kid would. I started drawing during random times of the day and I showed
them to people and of course they said they liked it. I drew pictures of my favorite
cartoons and of things I saw and just thought of. This sums up my life until the
eighth grade.

My mom discovered the middle school Greiner which is an Exploratory Arts
Academy. For the first time I had to audition to be in the school so I presented some
drawings I had done and the judges were delighted to see them. I was accepted
to Greiner; I was glad to have left my old school full of troublemakers and be in a
new school of artistic minds. The eighth grade was the best year of my life. I met
the two most brilliant kids I will ever meet and we became artistic buddies. There
I sharpened my drawing skills, discovered a talent for drawing realistic features,
and so much more. There I had become better in one aspect of being an animator/
graphic designer, which is being able to design things in multiple medias, but I want
to be an animator, so Iâd have to take animation classes and get my drawings on
computers.

I had little knowledge of creating and editing visuals on computers because the
computer that I currently own is too slow to run most programs. Also, the schools
that I had gone to didât have computer classes that taught anything besides how
to use the Photoshop program and other things that had little relevance to what I
wanted. At the end of the eighth grade year, a disappointing mishap kept me from
getting into the school of Booker T. Washington, so I ended up going to the school
A. Maceo Smith New Tech High. The schoolâs principle came to Greiner to recruit
students for the 9th grade and I was told by the principle of 2011-2012 that there
would be animation classes held at the school. I was hyped up by his presentation
and to my disappointment there were no animation classes. Again I was told there
would be animation classes next year for the 10th graders. The next year came
and still no animation classes. Iâve felt my want to draw die some ever since I left
Greiner. I wish Greiner continued through the 12th grade but it was time to move on.
So now I want to move on to Skyline and revive my want to create visuals that will
toy with otherâs emotions.

My real purpose for wanting to animate is because I love cartoons, anime, stop
motion, flip book, and other visual medias so much. I love that they entertain people
after a long days work or just when people are bored. I love that they keep people
distracted and happy. I want to make people distracted, happy, and possibly choke
their selves with laughter. I want to contribute my life to entertaining people
through my artistic and original moving visual art. I know that Skyline will help me
accomplish this dream.
Yeah I keep forgetting that it's grammar. I didn't type their selves word spell checked it. The application has graphic design or audio visual technology for me to choose between so I was informed that the closest to animation is graphic design and when I went to the school for a tour I was told i'd be making cartoons and stuff, I did tell my mom I want to be an animator and not a graphic designer but she says it's the same thing, apparently not.

Answer
the word is "grammar". There is no such word as "their selves". The word is "themselves".

You are confusing the term "graphic design" with animation. The two are related, but not the same at all.

Not all graphic designers use animation, although animation is certainly included within the scope of graphic design - it's not really correct to refer to an animator as a graphic designer. Animation has more in common with illustration, and increasingly in the world of modern animation, animators are making extensive use of 3D modelling and animation software.

Should I buy a Macbook Pro 13" for college?

Turnip

In a weeks time are be starting college and just need some advice into whether or not i should invest in a new laptop. Ive got an acer now but because of the courses im taking i think it would be a good idea to get an upgrade.
The courses im taking are: Graphics
Fine art
Digital Editing
ICT

Not a rich guy so on a budget but if it's worth it, i would happily save up for one and sort out a deal with my parents to buy one. Are there any other laptops that i should also consider buying instead of a macbook because i heard that macs were overall the best for adobe softwares like photoshop as thats what are mainly be using.

Answer
I was in the same boat as you last year, and now I swear by Macs. They're designed to be loaded with programs and still run fine. I have a 2010 15" Macbook Pro, I'm a graphic designer so I have the entire CS5.5 Master Collection, plus all my design work (thousands and thousands of files) plus about 200 other programs on top of that. (Including the Sims 3, which bogs down most laptops something fierce.) I've never had a single problem, this machine is a beast.

I got mine at BestBuy, I got a college student discount. You can get a 2011 13" for about $1,100. Or you could get a 15.4" like mine for about $1,800.

Honestly I wouldn't even look at other laptops, Apple is the nation's top company for a reason. They make reliable, quality products. Good luck!

Answer
I can't understand why the logic of this escapes people. The scary part is that the logic of this is escaping people who intend to go to college.

You are going to college. You are going to have a full plate of worry, with a side order of stress and a OMG milk-shake to wash it all down with. If college was easy, everyone would go. But, what are you going to use a computer for while you are there? Taking notes, doing research on the internet, writing papers, making presentations, reading spread sheets, watching movies and listening to music. Guess what? You can do all that with a netbook. That's right. You can do all of that with a Netbook running Linux, and the Free Open Office suite of programs.

Oh, and since EVERY college has a computer lab for the students to use, you don't NEED a laptop for your school work.

Now, that I've established that you don't need a powerful laptop if you decide to get one, and I've provided enough logic and proof to back that up... let me establish why you would want a CHEAP one.

Your laptop is in your book bag and you toss your book bag on your bed after a long, tiring day. CRUNCH!
You are studying late, and you reach for that energy drink that is just too close to your laptop. SPLOOSH!
You carefully put your book bag with your laptop in it on your bed, and your friend flops down on your bed as you both enter the room. CRACK!
You are listening to music and someone bumps into the desk the laptop is sitting on or trips over the cord powering it, sending it to the floor. SMASH!

I've heard all these excuses and many more in my time as a laptop repairman. They have all led me to the conclusion that since you have PLENTY to worry about already, you don't need to add worrying about a $1000 laptop to the equation. Sure, you can get extended warranties, and Additional Coverage, and all the extras that cover accidents, and you'll end up with a $2000 laptop in the end, and you will still stumble across some way to damage the laptop that is not covered by all that.

Now... if you can spend $400 to $500 for a laptop that will STILL do everything you need... isn't it FAR easier to replace a $400 laptop, than a $1000 laptop, should something happen? It's still only going to be current for the same amount of time, it's still going to let you write papers. It's still going to let you watch YouTube and listen to tunes. It's just going to cost half as much, or less.

Go to Best Buy. Walk around. Touch a few of them. Ask the salesperson to show you some laptops less than $500. They will have specials and one-for's available at that price.

end of line

What is the best laptop for a new freshman college student?

Austin

I know its a vague question but im basically looking for a general laptop around $1,000, but i would like to know what are my best options for a laptop that best fits a new college student, since im starting college in little over a month.

Answer
Freshmen year of college is a fun but sometimes crazy time in your life. These days laptops are the most essential part of your college career, so buying one is a big decision. Coming into my freshman year I didnt know what to do. I searched for computers by looking online with what seemed like an endless amount and then went to a few stores only to have a salesperson flood me with all the extras I âneededâ with it. The more I searched the more frustrated I grew. Dont let laptop shopping stress you out.

Here are a few rules to stick to when purchasing the best college laptop:
1.Dont buy all the gadgets and add ons
2.Skip the upgrades unless needed for certain purpose
3.Buy the extended warranty (your laptop will be through hell)
4.Dont buy a cheapy (going to last the college years) doesnt mean you have to buy big either
5.Buy flashdrives (its going to crash)
6.key features to focus on are the processor, memory, screen, and hard drive
7.If you have a smart phone, you may not want to buy an expensive one
8.If living far away from loved one maybe get a Webcam

College is going to throw a bunch at you, but just stay strong and you'll do fine. A great website for helping students during their freshman year of collge is www.ready4collegelife.com It also shows a few of the best laptops available for collge...
Good luck with college!

Which laptop would you recommend for an architecture student?

Jessica

Next year I'll be a first year architecture student (yay!) and I'm looking to buy a laptop before I start college. I know I will hardly even use Auto CAD other programs for the first year, but I will for the next four years. I don't know any of the specifications for the architecture program, but I do know that I need something with LOTS of memory and is pretty quick. I'm naturally leaning towards a Mac book Pro, but I'd really appreciate some insight! Thanks!

Answer
these gaming laptops are GREAT for graphics and heavy content(flash, heavy graphics, HD videos etc)

I guess you can go for that one, it's really great!

whats a good laptop for an architecture student?

i do a lot of 3d rendering and stuff like that? something with a fast processor and all that stuff .( i really dont know )
I'm considering a dell alienware. (is that good?) but i would love something that goes under 1200 dollars?

Answer
Hello!
I don't like Alienware because it's overpriced and the computers look bad. You could get the same performance with a low priced by buying a good high-end laptop.

For architecture, you require to render a lot of projects and for that you'll need:
- 8 GB RAM or more
- A good dedicated Graphics Card
- A Decent processor (ex: Intel Core i5 or i7)

I recommend:
Lenovo IdeaPad Y580:
- Has a 3rd-gen Intel Core i7 Quad Core CPU
- Has a NVIDIA GeForce GTX660M 2GB Mobile Dedicated Graphics Card
- 8 GB or 12 GB RAM
- Low priced

Asus G75VW:
- Intel Core i7 Quad Core COPU
- 16 GB RAM
- 17.3" HD Screen
- nVidia GTX660 2GB Dedicatd Mobile Grpahics
- A little over $1200

What is a good laptop for college and decent gaming?

Grif

Im looking for a laptop that is good for college, meaning it could last to around 4 years. Also one that is pretty good at gaming. I dont need a graphics card since I dont plan on playing high end games like Battlefield or Bioshock, but games that wouldn't require as much power for graphics and processing like Team Fortress 2 or Minecraft. Here are some things I am looking for:
-At least a i5 intel processor, preferably an i7 since it should run programs smoother
-8GB of Memory
-At least 500 GB Hard drive
-15- 17 in screen
Price Range: $500-1000
-One I could possibly buy at Bestbuy or online
Thanks for any suggestions

This HP does not have the Intel CPU but the AMD APU is very close to it and can be customized to what you need. If you want better performance upgrade the APU to a A10, dedicated graphics and increase the ram to 8GB.

Lenovo will not allow people to read instruction on how to access the BIOS menu or to get info on their puters on their web site unless you connect to them thru Facebook. They do this so they can spy on their users.

Chrome books are useless. They are designed by Google to make you dependent on Google. If you can not access the web then you can not do anything.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

Gaming/college laptop?

Now that I am in college, I am looking to replace my desktop with a laptop so I can game on the go.
I was looking into the Alienware M11x, but I see alot of people trash talk it. Does anyone on here have any good suggestions for gaming laptops around 800-1100$? People say that alienware is over priced trash but from looking around I cannot find a laptop that has the same specs for the same price. Please help!

Doing a tax write-off for a laptop?

bigbill

I am a recent college grad that was recently laid-off from my full-time position. I have already accepted another position but it does not begin until August 1st. In the meantime, I will be working on an hourly contract basis for my former employer. My new paychecks will have no taxes taken out at all. My question is that, since I am now a consultant, and I do use a laptop for work, would it be justified for me to write-off the $1000 I just paid for a laptop? Also, would this be an issue since I will only be doing the consulting for about 2.5 months?
I already owned a home PC and a laptop and I purchased an additional laptop to use separately for this work so it will be 100% for business. HOWEVER, once this engagement is complete I plan to sell the older laptop for around $300-400 and keep the newer one for personal use as my new job will be providing me with a laptop.

Answer
You cannot write it off and transfer it to personal use in the same year. When you file your taxes you have to put the dates in service and out of service. You would have to pay back the monies you deducted. Others have mentioned depreciation and useful life. Any item that you write off and either sell or transfer to personal use during the useful/depreciable life you have to add back all the deductions. Once it is a business expense keep it a business expense or dont write it off. If there is a monthly expense that is involved like internet service you can write off the % of internet that is for business.

How can I learn to take quicker and better notes in my college courses?

Heron By T

Answer
Ahhh, as a recent grad I'm happy to share with you my experience. Here's some strategies that may help:

1) Use a computer, laptop or Brother's word processor (Brothers is a company that makes portable machines that aren't as pricy as laptops.)
2) Use a palm pilot and keyboard to type out notes.
3) Gather notes from all your friends and combine them after class.
4) Use a tape recorder to tape the lecture. (I dont' really recommend this b/c listening to it would be like taking the class over again, but it works well for some people.)
5. Instead of only writing out notes on a notepad, pull out the book and underline stuff the teacher talks about. Use a highlighter only for really important stuff.
6. Sometimes when the teacher talks too fast and lists something out, I'll write down the first few letters of each thing. This reminds me of what the rest of the word is. I'll finish up the word after the list is finished.
7. Ask the teacher about stuff you missed after class. This will show you care about the class and let the teacher know that s/he might be moving along too quickly.
8. Ask your smart friends how they do it.
9. Find the nerd and ask him/her how s/he does it.

Good luck.

Laptop for high school?

Kenzie

Ok, so I am going into high school next year (I'm currently in Grade 8) and I am hoping to get a laptop. I will be using it mostly for school work and surfing the internet. Nothing too intensive. So, I was wondering what laptop would be good for my needs?
I'll also be carrying it around from class to class at school.

Answer
See honestly I would suggest that your requirement is basic and not that high.

What I would suggest that today there is a lot of trend of buying a refurbished laptop which gives three benefits to the customers:

1) Excellent Condition

2) Excellent Specs ( Upgradeable)

3) Value for money/ Prices

These are the main benefits which customers look into while they are purchasing Refurbished laptop, for students this is the best option and I would suggest that you should also go for this!!!

What would be a good laptop for a high school student?

LG

I am going to be a sophomore in high school next year and I'm going to need a new laptop. I need something that has tons of memory and I need a REALLY good price. I dont really like notebooks but I did use a 10 in. last year I liked.

Answer
A mac. Expensive, but worth it. Huge hard drives of 500 gigs and super easy to use and organize files. and fulfills all the needs of a high school student. Won't break and freeze or get viruses nearly as easily as a pc. If you get a cheap PC it will break in a few years and you will need to spend more for the next. Buy a mac now and save your money later.

What is the best laptop for a new freshman college student to get?

elizabeth

I'm looking around for some laptops that will be good to use in college- one that isn't too heavy, has fast and easy features, a webcam built in to chat with friends and family. Up to $1000 is probably my budget.

Answer
Hey,

I think I can really help you out. I've been making similar decisions lately.

I recommend Lenovo. Why? They have been voted several times as the best PC manufacturer for Windows-based laptops.

The most important thing to decide if is if you want a dedicated graphics card. This will allow you to play games on the computer. If not, you can get something called an Integrated Graphics Card which will still let you browse, watch movies etc. all the normal things.

Laptops great for dedicated graphics:

Lenovo IdeaPad U400 (Very light and stylish design)
Lenovo Y460p (For better performance during games, also a bit heavier)

These laptops have features that make them rock-solid (spill-proof and works after being accidentally dropped):

Lenovo Thinkpad T420

Laptop with integrated graphics:

Lenovo U260

Most have webcams, but you can easily purchase an external webcam if they don't. Plus an external webcam generally has higher video quality.

i need a laptop this year for an ap class im taking online (psychology). & school in general. in high school. nothing real fancy but something good and convenient for school stuff, research, typing a paper, and also just for pleasure. what's the best thing to get?

Answer
The best computer for high school and college students are Macs.

You can't really compare anything else. Startup is fastest, internet is the easiest, using them is simple as can be. No viruses.

The only reason to buy a PC at this point is to save money or use it for work that requires the operating system.

Should I get a laptop or a desktop computer?

blondechic

I am currently taking online college classes (thank god since my vehicle is also broken down!)

A little over a week ago, my toshiba laptop (only have about 1 1/2 years) shut down, while I was doing my homework. I had an old HP laptop (had about 4 years), but that one also broke. A guy in our community who fixes computers said that the toshiba's hard drive is broken and the HP's motherboard is broken. It would cost several hundred dollars to fix. I was going to purchase a new computer in August when I got my student loan. But since this has happened, my mom has offered to give me some money from her tax check and I can pay her back over the summer or when I get my student loan.

I will probably get a HP because I have had toshiba's and dell's and they were not good.
Currently I am renting a dell laptop at a local rental store and they are charging me $40 for this week, then $30 after that.

So I was wondering, is it better to get a laptop or a desktop? Which one lasts longer? I usually do my homework at my house, but I do tend to take it with me when I go out of town or at the library (very rarely, less than ten times a semester).

Answer
It makes more sense for a college student to purchase a laptop. A laptop provide the portability that you can not get from a desktop. If your goal was to sit at the same desk for 8 or more hours a day, then it might warrant a desktop, but since you are a student, and always on the go, a laptop is your best choice. When you wish to meet with your study group at Star (waist of) bucks coffee, you can bring your laptop with you. If you wish to journey back home to ________ state to see dear old mum for the holiday, you can bring your laptop. If you just want to relax at the dorm room and watch Back to the Future 1, 2, and 3, the laptop will be there for you. Just remember, laptops can and will fail before desktops do. It is always the best policy to purchase an external hard drive to back up your important files.

Gateway Laptop Question?

Alex O

I'm a high school student going into college in 3 months. Since piratically every college student whose taking computer engineering is required to have a laptop I decided to go to future shop and find one for myself. In there I found a descent computer, a gateway NV5909H. But after coming back from the store with it my family told me that gateway uses cheap parts and my laptop will fall apart in under 2 years. So I'm just wondering if what they are saying is true because I don't want it to blow up in my face after 2 weeks of use.

Answer
I don't agree with that - I've had my Gateway since I first went to college in '07.. I'm typing from it right now. It's held up for me well thus far :) All computer brands have some that just turn out to be lemons, but most of the time they're usually fine. Nine times out of ten I don't bother, but considering the laptop will be used a lot (since you're leaving for school), I'd suggest getting extra warranty (accidental coverage NEVER hurts) just in case something goes wrong though.

I'm about to start my freshman year of college, but need a laptop. Lets say price does not matter. (No Apple Products) What laptop brand would best fit the college atmosphere, and is the most modern/up-to date? I was thinking of an Asus of Lenovo, but I am open to any suggestions. And if you could please provide a link, that would be great.
Price range from $500-$1500. I would want the best performing laptop
and it would be nice if it had a touch screen, but that is not a feature I am really focused on.

What is the best laptop brand for college?

Nick

I'm looking for a reliable laptop brand that won't break in 3 years. My previous laptop was a HP Pavilion which I bought in 2009 and the motherboard broke due to overheating. So what's the best laptop brand of 2012? Something that is around the $500 price range (so no Mac's)

Answer
You might want consider a asus laptop or a dell laptop some are low price but not very good features at that price

Ledus

Thanks

Answer
If you plan on going away to college definitely get a laptop. It will be much more convenient because you can bring it wherever you need to take notes, write papers, research, etc. As for which brand, I would shop around and compare what each one has to offer for the price. Hope this helps!

Answer
ASUS laptop.

This HP does not have the Intel CPU but the AMD APU is very close to it and can be customized to what you need. If you want better performance upgrade the APU to a A10, dedicated graphics and increase the ram to 8GB.

Lenovo will not allow people to read instruction on how to access the BIOS menu or to get info on their puters on their web site unless you connect to them thru Facebook. They do this so they can spy on their users. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Chrome books are useless. They are designed by Google to make you dependent on Google. If you can not access the web then you can not do anything.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Please help!

which one is better for college student, desktop or laptop ?

Jack in th

I am going to 4 years University and will live in dorm. so i am going to buy a computer but which one is better, desktop or laptop?

Answer
Laptop, in my personal opinion. These are the good points and bad points of laptops/desktops.

This is why you should get a laptop: Laptops are portable and can be used around the school, but usually their tech specs (technical specifications) are initially lower than desktops and acceptable. For example, the laptop specs might be 120-160 GB hard drive, 1-2 GB of RAM and ranging from 1.6-2.4 Ghz of processor.

This is why you should get a desktop: Unfortunately, this is not portable but if you don't need to move it and put it around the school, then you should get this. Usually their specifications are very good, and you would need this if you are animating all the time or playing memory and graphic intensive games.

My comments: I prefer laptops better because they're more movable and can be brought on planes, buses, ... But this is a warning: It might be stolen. I have heard of my firend's ... Well, not exactly friends, but classmate's laptops of being stolen, so when you get the laptop take special precuations with it. Well, this would also happen with the desktop, if someone had the key to it.

Around how much to invest in laptops and desktops: ~$1000-1500.

What types? If you are buying a desktop, then choose DELL because it's easily customizable and you can tweak the settings before you buy it this and there, and you can also choose the option of having the stuff preinstalled.

If you are buying a laptop, then choose Sony or Apple. Sony's tech specs are'nt that good, but the look is good and the weight is ok. It's ok for a laptop if you can stand ~120-160 HD space. Apple is awesome for their Macbooks (I have one :D).

If you need ULTAR-PORTABILITY take Macbook Air, which is ~$1500 (I don't know, check the website), but the tech specs are quite low. 80 GB hard drive and 1 GB RAM I think.

If you need a media-powerhouse laptop then get Apple's Macbook Pro. It's around ~$1600-2000 (I don't know, please check the website). The specifications are very, very good. The graphics card is Nvidia graphics card, 250 GB hard drive space, ...

If you already liked one of the Apple's products but need Windows, don't fret, don't worry! Macs can dual boot and use Windows (You can also run them at the same time if you are using a virtual machine like Win4Lin or Parallels Desktop) using Mac OS X Leopard's new program, Boot Camp.

Overall I think that if you're aiming for cheap and good desktops, DELL. If you aiming for expensive and good desktops, DELL.

If you're aiming for cheap and good laptops, DELL. If you aiming for good looks and good laptops, choose Apple's Macbook Pro. If you need ultraportability for laptops choose Macbook Air.

(Also DELL and SONY should have Windows Vista preinstalled when you buy it, just like Apple should have Mac OS X Leopard [the new operating system] preinstalled on all Macs that they are selling.)

Also, if you need an ultra-cheap laptop but don't care whether it runs Windows, Mac, or Linux, then choose Asus' Eee PC. It is cheap, runs Linux. I don't know the specs yet, but I think you should choose DELL, Apple, or SONY instead.

which laptop should i buy?

*HP ENVY 4

Answer
Both of the ones you listed have Intel graphics chips. If your going into Graphics then your going to need more then that. I get the impression that you have around $800 to spend. Take a look at these. They do not have killer graphics but they are far better then the ones you listed.

This ASUS is above the price point I mentioned but it has far better graphics and has a one year accidental warranty.

How do UNI students use their Laptops??

dancerrr24

How do most uni students use their laptops?

Do you keep it in your room all day, take it to lectures, do assignments in the library etc. watch movies, play games?

I'm gna be a student this year and want to know if i should get a small portable one or large screen one. I know my sht with computers but i want to know how u use them in uni.

UCL btw if anyone knows. THanks

Answer
The question isn't how "people" use them; the question is how will YOU use it? Will you use it to take notes or access things online or locally while in the classroom? If that's what you expect to do, then get a small, portable one, and get a big monitor (or even a docking station) to connect to it when in your room. They were far too expensive for me to have one when I went to school (graduated B.S. computer science in 1990), but I'd have given a LOT to have one in my classes, and that was back before the internet was nearly as good as it is now! I can tell you one thing for certain - books for university classes tend to be HEAVY (it was no big thing for me to lug around 20 or 25 pounds of books), so a lightweight laptop is a must if you want to take it around campus.

laptop for uni student?

Sophie

I'm going to uni next year and I'm currently looking for a laptop.
I want something that:
- is preferably light
- has a long battery life
- easy to type keyboard
- nice design
- under $1500.
I want something like the ASUS UX30, however the battery life isn't that great.
Are there any laptops that are similar but have longer lasting batteries? (no macs or net books)

Thanks!

Answer
Whatever you do, never buy anything from Asus. They have The Worst customer support of any computer company. Ever. Just Google them and you'll see.

*edit* I just checked out the Asus UX30 and it is a netbook, you do realize?

Based on the size of the Asus UX30 and your price range/preferences I recommend the Sony VAIO SR Series VGN-SR420J/B NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T6500(2.10GHz)

Compared to the Asus UX30, the Sony VAIO SR420 has the same screen size, with 400% more memory, 6 hours of battery life (50% more), 30% more hard drive space than the UX30 (320 GB vs. 250 GB), a dual core processor instead of the Asus' single core (i.e. much faster), a built in webcam, a dual layer DVD burner, and it only weighs 4 pounds.

Check it out at: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834117912

*Note: There's a $50 more expensive model that includes better audio and video specs. The link for that one is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834117913

Hope this helps!

P.S. If his poor grammar isn't enough of a clue, none of Anthony's websites seem very legit. Most reliable websites that offer refurbished computers have a very limited warranty compared to their new items. I strongly recommend that you shop at tried and true websites such as Newegg.com. They have refurbished computers too, if you want to go that route, but at least you get the trusted name along with your purchase.

Good luck!!
