What's the best laptop for a student?

I'm a 2nd semester college student. I already have a laptop that is a hand me down from my mom. The problem with it is its too slow. When I say slow I mean sloooooow. It takes over 10 minutes for it to startup. It also takes a long time for me to load files. Theres less than half of he memory that is taken up but its still is slow. sometimes the internet works sometimes it doesn't

What I'm looking for

I'm looking for a computer that I can take notes in class with, surf the internet with ease, and can play some games on.

Money is not necessarily an issue, but i would like it to be under $1000. Something I can buy at futureshop.

Good, cheap laptop for students?

I'm a Junior in High School and I am wanting to get a laptop. I don't need anything fancy, just something that has internet, Microsoft Word, and will be able to hold music and photos. I don't know anything about laptops so please be very specific :) our family computer is always occupied and is slow...that's why i am wanting to get my own :) hopefully something between $200-$350.

Also, do you think that if i got a laptop now it would last me through college? I'm just going to a community college my first two years.
