What's a good cheap laptop for a college student?

Ashley S

I'm taking some online classes along with regular ones and I need a good laptop at a reasonable price, can you help me? What are some good ones, I'm looking to spend no more than $500.

Answer
when your talking about laptops...good and cheap usually aren't found together XD
check this bad boy out: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220693

it comes with:
Win7 premium 64 bit
4GB of system memory
320 GB hard drive
Gigabit networking (both LAN and WLAN)
an Intel Pentium T4400(2.2GHz) (which is dual core)
Intel GMA 4500M (not spiffy graphics but good enough)
the optical drive has you covered for DVD + and - as well as CDs
has 4 USB ports
and a 6 cell battery

not as good as my laptop...but for 500 bucks that is a deal. (as far as laptops are concerned, if we where talking desktops this would be such a rip off, XD)

Cheap Laptops for a upcoming college student?

Okay I'm am looking for a cheap latop around 200-350 at most i was looking at netbooks but decided a laptop would be better I know they are more like4000-500 but if anyone could find a legit one that would be great!!!!!! thanks so much!

Answer
Netbooks are $150 to $400. Laptops are $400 to $2,000. Desktop is $350 to $1,000. The best and high profile gaming laptop are around $2,000. If anybody pay $4,000 for a laptop like you said, then they were ripped off.

I like your attitude. LOL. However, just 3 years ago, the cheapest laptops was $700. And 5 years ago, laptops were not less than $1,000. Be grateful, laptops nowadays are $400. And there is the 4-cores laptops for $1,000, which isn't heard of back then. 8-cores is currently in development. The biggest factor other than price is normal laptop versus gaming laptop. Other factors included: processor type, amount of RAM, screen size, weight, storage amount, etc...

Cheap isn't everything. It really depends on you and what you want. Netbooks won't cut in college because a laptop out performance netbook in term of functionality and performance. I like to think of netbook as half a laptop. Another factor is screen size. 17" is big and bulky, but good for gaming. 15.4" is normal. 14" is small and light. Bigger the screen, the more it weight. My 15.4" is 4.2 lbs, but it feel like a tons sometime.

$400 laptops are usually low grade laptop with the usual Pentium-dual core or single core, less than 2gb ram, low level video card, etc. Low grade means low performance means low price. This are usually for people who just want a laptop.

If you want an average laptop say for all typical schoolwork, you need 2-core (not pentium) from intel or amd, 2 gb, over 100 gb storage, webcam, mic, bluetooth, wireless adapter, plenty of outputs, and 15.4" screen or less will cost you $650. A 4-cores will cost $850.

For gaming laptops, you need at least duo-core 2, 4gb ram, 15.4" screen or higher, all gaming outputs like hdmi and firewire, webcam and mic, bluetooth and infrared as well as wireless data transfer, wireless adapter like N or higher, at least gt9400 or higher video card, 500 gb storage or higher, and 64 bits. It will be around $1,000. A 4-cores gaming is $1,500.

Most retail stores will charge you 7% tax, so online stores are more preferably. There are also warranty package and add-on to the laptops when buying it. I check dealigg.com, deals2buy.com, slickdeals.net, and fusedeals.com to find out the latest and cheapest laptops. Every retail stores has new deals every Sunday, while most online stores have random sales.
