What is the best inexpensive laptop perfect for a college student?

I'm hoping to stay under 400 but if it's worth it, 500 at most.
Also, what brands to stay away from and I prefer to have a 15" or so.

Answer
While this laptop will be in the upper range of your budget, I think it's well worth it. I recently bought a Gateway (a brand that's always treated me well and generally has great value for the price spent). Anyway, here it is: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway+-+Laptop+with+AMD+Athlon%26%23153%3B+II+X2+Dual-Core+Processor+-+Midnight+Blue/9695339.p?id=1218150605281&skuId=9695339&st=Laptops_Netbooks_Clearance_20100702&cp=1&lp=6

The reason that this particular laptop grabbed my attention was that it has a lot of RAM (4GB) and a pretty fast processor (2 GHz Dual-Core), in terms of laptops. Also, the monitor is great; 15.6" still seems like a nice, large size to the eyes, but is still small enough for easy storage; the monitor is also an LED monitor, which is the best type in viewing angles, lifespan/durability, and reducing eyestrain. The final reason was obviously the price; I've haven't seen too many laptops in this price range before that weren't on the junkier side, but this one is actually good quality.

Unfortunately, though, Best Buy hasn't seemed to have this laptop in stock for a while, so you may have to look for it at other websites or retailers. On a side note, this laptop also comes in Cherry Red; just letting you know that Midnight Blue isn't the only color.

In terms of brands to avoid, the first one I would suggest is Apple; besides having an advantage in battery life, the MacBook is basically just a really expensive laptop. Disappointingly few programs run on Mac OS X as well. I would also advise against many of HP's laptops, unless you're looking to get a really expensive one. HP's cheaper laptops are typically rather flimsy, especially the monitors.

wat would be a good, inexpensive laptop 4 a hs student?

i am starting 11th grade. i don't have my own computer, and am looking 4 one. i would like to get one that's not 2 expensive ($600-$750) and that works well. i am looking 4 a laptop w/ webcam n possibly bluetooth. i don't need an extremely fast computer, but on that will be able 2 run well w/ lots of programs open. i am leaning towards the hp pavilion dv6910. here are some of the computers i am looking @:

Answer
I've looked at all of the laptops and for the most part they're all good.

I think that instead of going for the hp pavilion dv6910 (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/HP-Pavilion-dv6910us-15-4-Widescreen-Entertainment-Laptop-FE653UA-ABA/sem/rpsm/oid/214772/catOid/-12963/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do#top)
, get the HP Pavilion dv6928 (http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/oid/215027/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do#top).

The d6928 is much better cause it has a faster processor, the Intel Duo T5750 and about 50gb of extra hard disk space (the hard drive also has a faster RPM so information can be accessed more readily). It has 3gb of RAM which should be plenty to run a plethora of programs.

Yeah so go for the HP Pavilion dv6928us, you won't regret it.

As for the dell link you posted; if you leave the Dell laptop in its default configuration then the HP is better. However, if you decide to custom config the Dell and select the best parts then the Dell will win hands down. But selecting the best parts will probably make the Dell go beyond your budget (over $750).
