mini-laptop or laptop? (high school student)?

hello, im a high school student secondary 4.... i would like to buy a computer... im going to use it to write assignments and school work and research but also to check my e-mails, msn, facebook ect..... what do you recommend a mini-laptop or a normal laptop and which one precisely?

no idea about when/who
wouldn't secondary imply 7/8-12
