what is the best laptop to get for a university student?

best brand....size......

Answer
The type of laptop you're after depends upon what you're going to be using it for and most importantly, your budget.

Apple MacBooks are a bit more expensive than their PC-based laptop alternatives. They're great for art/design students or just the Mac-inspired, for the rest of us there is more value for money elsewhere.
Best brand - Apple MacBook Pro 13inch for around £750/$950 - Going to Apple directly may get you a student discount.

Netbooks are lightweight and portable - great for taking notes in lectures as well as browsing the internet or simpler tasks. One of the most common at the minute is the Asus EEE but I would also look at the Acer Aspire One and the Dell Inspiron Mini 10v. A Netbook will set you back around £200/$350-$400

A laptop is the best all purpose choice and can be used as a replacement desktop as well as a lecture-friendly choice. In addition laptops generally come with a DVD drive (important for disc-based games!), add to this widescreen 15inch screen and you've got your home cinema for DVD films.

With the wide range of laptops around, it is difficult to pinpoint one specific choice for the best laptop for university, without knowing the budget. If I had to go with one for the sub £400 budget, it would probably be an Acer and quite possibly the Acer AS5738Z-423G16 (Can be bought for £370 - see http://www.squidoo.com/student-laptop-deals-for-university-uk for finding the best laptop for university - with or without student discounts).

I'm hoping to stay under 400 but if it's worth it, 500 at most.
Also, what brands to stay away from and I prefer to have a 15" or so.

Answer
While this laptop will be in the upper range of your budget, I think it's well worth it. I recently bought a Gateway (a brand that's always treated me well and generally has great value for the price spent). Anyway, here it is: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway+-+Laptop+with+AMD+Athlon%26%23153%3B+II+X2+Dual-Core+Processor+-+Midnight+Blue/9695339.p?id=1218150605281&skuId=9695339&st=Laptops_Netbooks_Clearance_20100702&cp=1&lp=6

The reason that this particular laptop grabbed my attention was that it has a lot of RAM (4GB) and a pretty fast processor (2 GHz Dual-Core), in terms of laptops. Also, the monitor is great; 15.6" still seems like a nice, large size to the eyes, but is still small enough for easy storage; the monitor is also an LED monitor, which is the best type in viewing angles, lifespan/durability, and reducing eyestrain. The final reason was obviously the price; I've haven't seen too many laptops in this price range before that weren't on the junkier side, but this one is actually good quality.

Unfortunately, though, Best Buy hasn't seemed to have this laptop in stock for a while, so you may have to look for it at other websites or retailers. On a side note, this laptop also comes in Cherry Red; just letting you know that Midnight Blue isn't the only color.

In terms of brands to avoid, the first one I would suggest is Apple; besides having an advantage in battery life, the MacBook is basically just a really expensive laptop. Disappointingly few programs run on Mac OS X as well. I would also advise against many of HP's laptops, unless you're looking to get a really expensive one. HP's cheaper laptops are typically rather flimsy, especially the monitors.
