Tobiashi. go to your local walmart or Best Buy. they have a whole bunch of discounts on labtops when the school year starts for college students.

What configuration/brand/model would you recommend for a "decent" laptop for college student?


The student will use the laptop for OpenOffice, Photoshop and the usual internet apps; and maybe 1 or 2 PC-based games.

What CPU, RAM, HDD is minimum?

This is the kid's second laptop. The first one ($1200 Vaio) is "on the fritz" just because it's been through hell -- placed in a Targus laptop backpack, then shuttled from dorm to class to library; and through airport security and airline travel.

I want to spend minimum $$$ for a laptop that will still perform well.

one of those, Upgraded the APU to 3550MX and 7690 GDDR5 2nd GPU in there, came out to 650 after adding the google coupon code.

May still be possible under 700$, depending on available coupon codes online, but in a nutshell, you would get a Quadcore+Dual GPU + 6 gigs of ram, the maxed out FUSION that AMD/ATi have to offer.
Their order placed to door time is wicked thought, 2 weeks.

But I do recommend it, it would be perfect for you, frankly I was thinking the same thing before I settled on this laptop.

My other choice, which I almost got was an ASUS Transformer prime, its Beautiful, but it just doesn't compare to the horsepower of a maxed out DV6Z
