Laptop Decision: Macbook 13" Pro 2012 or Macbook 13" Air 2012?

football64

Macbook Pro 2012 or Macbook Air 2012?

I am a college student and have been waiting for an Apple Macbook for awhile and I guess these are the newest laptops, so can you help me choose?
- Size is not a big deal, just needs to fit nicely in backpack.
- Prices are similar for students
- I am not careless, but still a college student.

Macbook Pro 2012: ($1,099)
13-inch: 2.5 GHz
2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
4GB 1600MHz memory (upgrade 8GB = $90)
500GB 5400-rpm hard drive1 (upgrade 128GB flash storage1 = $180)
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Built-in battery (7 hours)2

vs.

Macbook Air 2012 ($1,149)
13-inch : 128GB
1.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor
Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz
4GB memory
128GB flash storage1
Intel HD Graphics 4000

Help, please?

Answer
If you want more processing power, go with the Macbook Pro. If you want lighter weight, go with the Macbook Air. I am looking at making a similar decision. I am probably going to so with the Macbook Pro and I'll probably upgrade to an SSD later on when the prices drop. The Macbook Air is not upgradeable. I usually use my laptop at my desk at home and occasionally take it places. If I were carrying it a lot, I would probably so with the lighter Macbook Air.

Good Laptop Deals for a Freshman College Student?

I'm going to college in the fall 2012 semester and I need a laptop. Do you know of any good deals on new or partially used laptops? Please provide website links with your answer.

Answer
Please, please don't buy an Acer >.< They'll go down FAST.

When you go cheap, at least get a good brand. I suggest Lenovo. These laptops here are VERY low priced, but they have decent specifications. They have low-power processors so they stretch battery life and generate low noise and heat. This does mean; however, that the performance may be under-par in some places such as gaming and multitasking. If you're just using it for Surfing the net, MS Office and iTunes, you should be good to go!

Good Luck!

EDIT: I prefer Ryou-kun's opinion above!

Answer
You can now get a quality HP laptop for under $400.And even if you're buying a higher priced HP laptop,HP is known to offer great bonuses like a printer, free shipping, higher RAM or hard-drive at no extra cost. Something you should consider as a way of stretching those student dollars.

Recommendations for "decent" laptop for college student?

Vader

.

What configuration/brand/model would you recommend for a "decent" laptop for college student?

The student will use the laptop for OpenOffice, Photoshop and the usual internet apps; and maybe 1 or 2 PC-based games.

What CPU, RAM, HDD is minimum?
__

This is the kid's second laptop. The first one ($1200 Vaio) is "on the fritz" just because it's been through hell -- placed in a Targus laptop backpack, then shuttled from dorm to class to library; and through airport security and airline travel.

I want to spend minimum $$$ for a laptop that will still perform well.

Links would be highly appreciated.

Thanks!

I recently ordered http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Processor&v1=AMD&series_name=dv6zqe_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/AMD/dv6zqe_series

one of those, Upgraded the APU to 3550MX and 7690 GDDR5 2nd GPU in there, came out to 650 after adding the google coupon code.

May still be possible under 700$, depending on available coupon codes online, but in a nutshell, you would get a Quadcore+Dual GPU + 6 gigs of ram, the maxed out FUSION that AMD/ATi have to offer.
Their order placed to door time is wicked thought, 2 weeks.

But I do recommend it, it would be perfect for you, frankly I was thinking the same thing before I settled on this laptop.

My other choice, which I almost got was an ASUS Transformer prime, its Beautiful, but it just doesn't compare to the horsepower of a maxed out DV6Z

when is the perfect time for a college student to buy a laptop?

NARDO

Answer
Take advantage of the after new year inventory clearance sales events.
Just remember these: The 1st thing you should look for on the computer surface is A LOGO STICKER FOR NVIDIA OR ATI MOBILITY RADEON just below the keyboard. This SHOWS that the laptop has A DEDICATED GRAPHICS CARD (for AutoCAD & Adobe Photoshop). Diablo III, the game I would love most to play is said to run on 3D graphics & is rumored to need at least 1GB GRAPHICS MEMORY (a lower graphics memory = CHEAPER laptop price), so always check the system requirement specs of the game's packaging (ex. SIMS 3; see if your laptop meets all the requirements).
Next important aspect is the RAM (memory). If you're in designing & you need to ran applications like AutoCAD 2007 or softwares used for editing photos and videos, you have to make sure that the laptop has AT LEAST 2GB DDR2 memory modules in it (the more, the better; DDR3 the fastest and newest type of memory modules that came out last October).
But what makes a computer really run fast? It is it's processor! So if you really want your processor to have computing prowess & for you to be able to run different applications simultaneously, make sure it's AS EFFICIENT AS an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (Centrino 2 is a Core 2 Duo that features power saving capabilities; Quad Core is for gaming fanatics). A Core 2 Duo is like having 2 motors running the computer each independent of the other w/c means for a Quad Core, it's like 4 motors are running the machine (that means it will run faster & more efficient even if its frequency is lower to that of a Core 2 Duo). Intel: Core 2 Duo, Centrino 2, Quad Core & Core i-7 (Core i-5 for desktops only as of now) are all very much faster and better than an Intel: DUAL CORE, PENTIUM, CELERON, ATOM (and their more affordable AMD counterparts). Just make sure that you have AT LEAST 2GHz of speed on your processor. For my computer, I chose an Intel® Core⢠i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB; newest type just came out this Nov) w/c is just the right stuff for the applications I use & games I play.
The average laptop LCD screen size is 15.4". If you want something smaller than that w/ these 3 features I just shed some light on, expect the price to go higher (ex. for 13.3" & 14.1" LCD screens).
The HDD (Hard Disc Drive) should have at least 320GB {I would have loved it if my HP came w/ 2 HDD bays like a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6979: 1st one for a 128GB SSD (Solid State Drive) & a 500GB (72000rpm) 2nd HDD}.

If you've thought of a SMALL, PORTABLE and affordable laptop, the new Sony CW13FX/B Jet Black glossy notebook went on sale @ Fry's about 3 weeks ago (for only $699.99). I checked out the price they had in other stores & Fry's was cheaper by about $200 {go to Fry's Electronics (www.Fry's.com) then type in this # 6029078 (or 6029138 for white & 6029108 for pink) in the search box under Notebooks/Tablets before you click on GO}. Now, after the sale, the price went up by $100, so we are waiting for it to go on sale again after Thanksgiving. Let's say you are on 9th grade.. when buying a computer, you have to consider if you will still be able to use the one you bought for college? For this particular Sony model, I would assure you, you can still use it for college as long as you take good care of it & not break it (for the technology installed on this computer will not be outdated & still be good in 10 years to come, but this is just an example). There's a lot of good brand of computers out there Toshiba, Dell, HP and ACER (w/c owns Asus & Gateway; has affordable computers w/ the newest technology installed), you just need to look for the ones on sale (try display computers on Clearance Sale inside stores like Micro Center, Best Buy and Office Depot). Try http://www.newegg.com/ look for Pavilion dv6-1362nr (sale @ $649.99).
MICROSOFT OFFICE IS AN OFFICE PRODUCTIVITY SOFTWARE (so you would need to buy the retail version after the 60-day Free Trial Version that comes with all brand new computers expires, to be able to use the Word, Excel and Power Point applications). Retail version is about $159, but you can get a discounted price of $99 w/ a configured Dell laptop (www.dell.com).
MacBooks, that is on a totally different aspect for Apple has their own OS (Operating System) unlike the common Windows OS (XP, Vista and THE NEWEST WINDOWS 7) that most computers come with.
For the best prices, go to Fry's, CostCo, MicroCenter & BestBuy's web sites for updates & comparison. There are a lot of options & different combinations you can try in customizing your own laptop, just STICK TO THE BARE ESSENTIALS first (www.HP.com). This 15.6" HP laptop I customized & had configured w/ the Intel® Core⢠i-7 came to a total amount of $1,455.80 ($136 tax + other sur-charges already included). I chose to pay more to have the newest technology installed so that I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT GETTING OUTDATED WITHIN THE NEXT 11 YRS.

I am planning on buying a new laptop..What can you guys recommend that I buy?

Laptops with
-built in camera
-lots of memory
-lightweight (I'm tiny so I want to carry something small and handy)
-fast
-not too expensive

Also, if I go to Best Buy or some store, what should I watch out and ask when it comes to laptops?

Please help. I am clueless about buying laptops.

Answer
Buying a laptop is a complicated decision which will affect you every day for the next few years.

In addition to price and specs, you want to consider things such as ease-of-use, speed, reliability, stylish-design and tech-support.

Different people would have different opinions.

Therefore, I would recommend you to check ProCompare.com. They have a recommendation engine that ranks laptops (and other tech products) based on ratings and reviews from a community of trusted IT professionals. They also have a cool personalization slider that lets you personalize the results based on the criteria that are most important to YOU.

What is a good and stylish laptop for an architecture student?

helper

Hi I am an architecture student on my fourth year in university, and my Alienware m9700 that my cousin recently gave me just crashed on me! Well I've had it for about 4 months but he had it previously for 4 years. I think it would be better to just get a new laptop instead of replacing its hard drive, so what would be good?

I use programs such as Google Sketchup 8 with renderer plug-ins like Podium and IDx,as well as AutoCAD 2011 and Revit 2012. My main concern is that my laptop would crash when rendering so hopefully my new one won't crash anymore.

On the stylish part, I want to spend at most $1700 for a name brand such as Sony, Dell or Asus. ANy other brands would be great but I'll definitely take a look at them before buying. Thanks!
I currently own a 15 inch Macbook Pro with 500GB memory, but I find that on parallels my AutoCAD is so slow so I need a separate PC laptop. Thanks

I really like this one from Dell.

What should I look for in a laptop for college?

I need the cheapest best quality laptop for college. I have no clue what for look for in computers. What do I need to know before buying???

Answer
A lot of students have mac books but they are so overpriced. Any laptop should do for college unless you plan on playing video games on it. Your main focus should be on battery life, screen size and operating system. Battery life is big if you plan on bringing it to class or doing work in the library (if there are no outlets there). Screen size, this might be just me, but i can't stand looking at computers with a screen size of 15' or lower. And yes i do know you will get better battery life will a small screen so i would get a laptop with a 15.6' screen. Operating system should be windows 7 home, vista is buggy and most of the computers in your college probably have it as well. Stay away from refurbished laptops they may be cheaper but having your laptop dieing on you while your on campus is the worst. I would stick to the main brands: Toshiba, HP, Sony, Samsung, Gateway. Shop around there are a lot of good deals online, you don't just have to go to stores like BestBuy. Newegg.com and Amazon.com usually have some good deals.

One other thing to look at... if you can i would hold off buying a laptop until Microsoft Office 2010 comes out (June) because there will probably be deals involving the purchasing of a laptop and receiving a discount on MS office

Should I buy a new laptop?

Anonymous

I have had a dell laptop for 2 years. Next year I will be going to college for at least 6 years. I was thinking of getting a macbook pro, but wasn't sure if I should get one.

Answer
Hi,

I see some of the others here are trying to mislead you when it comes to choosing a Mac. You get what you pay for, and with Macs you get a lot more. A totally integrated user experience, fantastic build quality, long life, good performance, excellent trouble-free software, and a machine you can be proud of. Most users who buy Mac never go back to a PC.

The last thing you want to be doing while going to college is spending time on virus updates, upgrading and maintaing the machine, and fighting with settings and drivers. Although the Mac may seem a little unfamiliar at first after years using a PC, you soon learn to appreciate its simplicity and elegance -- it's well worth the effort.

There's a good reason that the MacBook is the machine of choice for most students these days, and if you do go for a MacBook, you will find many kindred spirits at college.

You don't necessarily need to go for a high-end MacBook -- the MacBook Air makes a perfect compromise between small size, low cost and excellent quality. If you want to go with a laptop that will last you for your time at college, then invest in a MacBook Pro Retina display -- they are available in 13 or 15 versions, and are probably the best laptops that money can buy.

One final tip: you can get great student discounts on Macs and Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, which you will need for your studies.

Good luck!

Laptop choice for student entering college?

jo_z_rox20

Next fall, (fall 2011) i will be entering college as a freshman, and i was wondering if anyone had a particular choice for a laptop computer that would be ideal for a student.
course, i'm going to be a student, so i;m nt looking to spend a lot of money either.
any suggestions?
thanks in advance!

Answer
don't do a dell they have bad customer service and quite a few of their 15's have fan issues after a few months (I replaced 3 fans before my dell died this last march, right before all my essays were being written) You're better off with a sony or toshiba (my friend has a toshiba and hasn't had an issue yet) plus they have better battery life then dell (by a mile, my 1525 got maybe 1 hour of battery off the cord) or if possible save up for a mac (you most likely could get by on library pc's till your able to afford a macbook at starting price of $999, I had too ;) ) It's worth it believe me!

Superman

I will be using the laptop for music, pictures, and videos, so I will need some memory. It needs to be under $1000. I heard Macbooks were good, but they are expensive. I was thinking a Sony Vaio, but I have heard that they do not hold up well.

Answer
Don't get a macbook....

I, personally, love Acer. Always come with nice features, built-in webcam + mic, hold up well, and not so tough on the wallet. Also for music+pics+video, u will want to look for Hard Drive Space, not memory.

huh?

Calling out all current and former college students. What do you the best screen size is? Remember its relation to weight!

Also mention if it is the only computer you use either.

Answer
I would go with a 15'' screen. It's a good combination of size and weight. I went to college with a 12'' widescreen and it was ok for a while but when i had to do serious work that required a few hours per night on it, i found that it was too small and strained my eyes after a while. Go with at least a 15'' inch monitor and if you don't need to take it around with you get a 16'' or 17'' widescreen so you can watch movies confortably...

Another option is to get a small laptop and buy yourself a separate monitor for it so you have a proper screen for a laptop that you can carry around on campus..

College Students: What is the most practical screen size?

EEEEKKKK

I am a 12th grader this year and about to apply for college soon. I understand that a laptop is a not a requirement but more a luxury. I was wondering what is the best screen size for college? I plan to use it as my main computer but am unsure if I will bring it to class for notes. Please tell me if this is practical. I will be living off campus so space does not matter. I prefer larger screen sizes (I am current running on a 20 inch), so nothing less than 14".

Answer
As a college student, I was once in your shoes. I used to use a 22" flat LCD monitor before going to college. When I left I got a 17" laptop. At first I figured, I wouldn't have to carry it around often and I really didn't plan to, but I found myself meeting up with friends who wanted to hang out, do homework together, and play games (BF2, WoW, Unreal)... eventually the large laptop become impractical to use. Size and weight were the too largest issues I had with it at the time. The laptop is so bulky that I hate lugging it around campus.

It's been 3 years, and I highly regret purchasing a 17" laptop. Recently, I bought a 15.4" Dell XPS 1530 and do not regret the decision to go smaller. It fits conveniently into my normal bag and is easy to carry with one hand without fearing I'm going to drop it. Granted, laptops have become much lighter than they used to be that doesn't make them any less bulky. My serious recommendation is go with a 15.4" laptop if you ever plan to take it outside your dorm otherwise it'll be a complete incovenience.

Here's my recommendation, if you really what the large screen experience at your dorm... buy a smaller screened laptop that is still managable for everything you need while on the run, but buy a larger monitor for your room. It'll cost about $200-$300 for the larger monitor (assuming your current monitor wouldn't work).

What other school supplies would you recommend for a freshman in college, besides a laptop, notebooks, pens/pencils, and a calculator? My major is Biomedical Science (Pre-Med) and I will be taking a chemistry and biology class both semesters. I'll also have writing both semesters. I will have Survey of Calculus and Statistics, so if anybody can recommend a good calculator for those that would be of much help. Thanks.

Answer
School Supplies for College Students (minus the basics):

-Flash Drive
-Dictionary & Thesaurus
-Surge protectors for your laptop & other electronics
-My friends and I got by with TI-84s for upper level math classes...
-Get a nice pair of goggles (or well covered safety glasses) if you're taking a Chem class
-Organizer/date book to keep track of assignments, exams and events

And, really this is about all you need... the items u will use in class are pretty basic.

Best of luck in college, have fun!

qwerty

I'm going to be taking my "pre-med" classes and what not. Maybe a Japanese class. I kinda wanna mess around and get garage band. What would be a long lasting laptop that would be good for a college student? Thanks!!

Answer
A 13" MacBook Pro will be sufficient for you. You can make the decision if you want the low-end (2.5Ghz) or high-end (2.9Ghz) version. I would probably go for the high-end version because you will not be able to upgrade your processor in the future; faster the processor, faster your laptop.

Hi, i live in India (Mumbai) and am looking to buy a laptop.
Im a student in college but am not very tech savvy so i dont understand the jargon involved. Im not very into gaming so a really good graphics card/processor is not a priority. Anyway plz help me out. I need to know the specifications that i need to check out before i make a choice, like processor speed, RAM memory, hard drive memory etc. Thanks.

Answer
For you I personally suggest a dual core processor 1.8 or above, with 2gig of ram (which is memory) and at least 160gig hard drive. At these specs, you should be able to find a reasonable priced laptop which will work great and last.

What are the best laptops for college students?
I'm going to college in the fall and started laptop shopping. My school has no specific model I need to get. Just the basics every college student would need. But I've been looking and no laptops seem to come with a full version of Microsoft Office they all offer trials. Also I don't want to spend much more than $600 if possible. Thank you so much!

Answer
Honestly, any laptop is fine. A lot of people seems to have this notion that "brand X" is better, but the bottomline is, they're ALL essentially the same. Nearly all laptops are made in China and their hardware most likely comes from the same factory and vendor (CPU: Intel or AMD; RAM: Hynix, Samsung, Elpida, etc.; Video card: Intel, AMD (ATI), or Nvidia; Motherboard: Foxconn or Asus)

Also, if you do not want to pay for Microsoft Office or any word processing software, there are some free alternatives such as OpenOffice. Open Office is a 100% free and open source word processing suite.

I like HP, I have never tried Apple,

but will never try Dell. Bad experience.

I am a college student and I have 3 bulging discs in my neck and back. I have two years left in college. I'd like something budget friendly and light to carry. I would like good functionality with software. I already have a dv6 artist edition laptop that I will keep at home. But it's too heavy to carry for me.

Answer
Budget friendly and Apple don't mix. You can't have both in that case. HP still makes their HP Mini last I checked, which is a nice 10.1" netbook. Acer makes the Aspire One, which is another good netbook (I own the 2010 version, but the 2011 is just as good, if not better, using the nicer dual-core Intel Atom processor) Both are around $250 and are good for taking notes and doing simple tasks, but for doing any real intensive tasks, they just don't cut it, and you may have to find a way to cope with the dv6. Good luck! Hope I helped!

What is the best laptop to buy for a student attending college in the fall of 2011?

My parents are letting me get a laptop before college. I can spend up to $1000. Maybe a few more hundred. What would be the best bang for my buck?
I was looking at the Macbook Pro but I would only be able to afford the 13". I dont know if this is too small or not.

Answer
Haters gonna hate but i would honestly recommend a macbook pro, this laptop is reliable, wont ever die, has specs that will cover your needs, and if you have a problem, Apple has the best customer support in the business. It is well worth the money. If the MacBook pro is too pricey, a standard MacBook will do just fine.

edit: I have the base 13" model and I think it is the perfect size. It is light and portable and the battery will last me around 7 hours.

I'm starting college in 2 weeks and I'm really looking for the ultimate portability since I will be on the go daily. I don't have enough money to get a macbook and the laptops I look at seem way too bulky to carry around. So could I use the ipad as a word processor? what are your thoughts?

Answer
The iPad is NOT a laptop replacement. Not yet anyway.. A friend of mine has 1 and 2, and while typing on the 2nd one is easier thanks to a flat back, Its best you get a cheaper laptop as the iPad is like a big iPod touch. Its designed for web browsing and apps, stuff like that. Get a vaio laptop as apple is too expensive or you, as they have great quality, and offer great value for money.. Hope I helped,

Matthew

Is this a good laptop for a college student on a budget?

lrsp727

I'm a college student with a tight budget and after searching and searching model after model, company after company, this Acer Aspire 9410 17" widescreen laptop came to my attention. If you have this model tell me how it runs. The link is

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5969098

is it ok for the price? Pretty good, slow? To me it looks good but the integrated graphics seem a little bad. I would appreciate the feedback since I know that sometimes what you see in a picture or on a web site isn't exactly what you get. The more thorough the review the better. Thank you.

Answer
Looks like a good deal to me. Reasonable brand, overall good features, at fair price.

the only thing I might recommend is finding a computer with similar specifications and that is more portable. As a college student you might want to bring your notebook with you and that's a fairly large notebook. Believe me, the weight might not seem too much but carrying it across campus along with a backpack full of books can be miserable - although it may help you fight freshman 15.

Integrated graphics is not an issue for school related applications (with exceptions). Those exceptions include graphic designs and CAD but if you're doing those you should think to spend more and lean towards desktops. It's not great for games but again, you're going for budget and school right?

A small notebook with a good display at home might be a good combo.

I check these web sites out for good deals...
www.dealcatcher.com
www.bensbargains.net
www.slickdeals.net
... there are a few more but those are the ones I check regularly.

There's very little to dislike about that notebook. You found a good overall value though. I don't think you can go wrong with that purchase. Good job and good luck in college.

Unsolicited advice:

Get a good external hard drive. You'll appreciate it if your hard drive ever crashes with all your pictures, MP3s, etc. Always back up! I can't tell you how many horror stories of people losing their precious college memories. I've also lost pictures due to primary hard drive failure.

It's also handy for tranfering files from other people's computers (friends, group projects, etc).

I want to buy a new gaming laptop for collage.I have this year an 1+ from high school and I am going to go in 2011-2012 in collage. I want a top gaming laptop of 3500-5500$
Will there be a new CPU, Graphic card, Ram that will be much faster then ?

Answer
This is sort of a pointless question.

Of course there will be new CPU's, new GPU's, faster and higher capacity RAM and hard drives. They are in a constant state of change, and new additions to each of those categories come out at least once a year, so you're looking at at least 2 generations better than what we have now.

But you might want to rethink your strategy, as a super powerful gaming laptop is not very portable and it's battery life will suck. And as a college student myself, you are going to want a laptop that you can take where ever you need, easily (both weight and size) and something that wont die in an hour. Come back to Yahoo Answers when you are ready to buy a gaming laptop, as any advice as to parts is pure speculation and will lead you astray.

Do you get to keep your Treca computer?

Cat

Do you get to keep your treca laptop/computer? Treca is an online schooling system in the state of Ohio. They give you a free laptop/computer. Only asking people with experience thanks! Also they give you an ipod and now an ipad. Do you get to keep those? Thanks in advance!

Answer
Don't be silly. No state legislature is going to fund a free computer, free iPhone and free iPad to any group of students. In case you haven't heard, there's a bit of a monetary squeeze on at the moment. (Recession? Sequester? Any of that ringing a bell?)

Page 9 of your handbook:

Parents and students hereby accept responsibility for damages resulting from abuse, misuse, or disassembly, and agree to abide by appropriate disciplinary actions. Students, who transfer to another school, withdraw, graduate, are expelled, or leave TDA for any reason, must return all tools and equipment provided by TDA in working order and in original or equivalent packing materials to TDA (100 Executive Drive, Marion, OH 44302). What is a good laptop for college students?

Rach

I desperately need a new laptop. Mine is a refurbished Dell Latitude D600, and it is falling apart (keys are falling off... the monitor is about to fall off, ect.) I'm about to head into my second year of college and was wondering what would be the best laptop for a college student? I'm open to any suggestions. Mac, Dell, ect.

Answer
My suggestion would be find a replacement on ebay, it will hold you over until you graduate and then you can get a nice, expensive model
I know a company that I purchased a Dell, IBM and HP from in the past year (all work great and were in better than described condition)
the website is
www.stores.ebay.com/it-bysmart

they are really nice to deal with and the computers are an excellent deal.

they have Apples, HPs, and they will work well to get you through school

Best of luck

Asus g75 vs Lenovo y500?

best cheap laptops for college students 2012 image

Michael

Hi guys, I'm a college student and need a laptop that is dependable and long lasting.
Now, the Lenovo y500 has dual graphics which I can get for $1099, whereas compared to the Asus g75 with only a single graphics card (benchmarked at 1600+ vs 1200+ x 2 for the Lenovo).
The processors for the two laptops are the same at 3630QM (i7),
It seems like Asus doesn't have that good of a support crew compared to Lenovo.
I personally think that the Lenovo is more versatile, I could also get a cheaper version with 8GB of ram and a normal 1000GB Hard Drive for $1000.
What do you guys think?
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

Answer
I currently own the lenovo y500 and I have owned a asus laptop before, not to mention I have 2 family members who also own asus laptops.
the y500 has the more professional look and is has a slightly better classy feeling due to the aluminum lid finish and all around the keyboard.
in terms of performance and reliability, I have yet to notice any bdsm or random shutdown or restart, the system is very reliable even under extreme pressure, I don`t think asus improved their gaming laptops keyboards by much but from my experience the y500 has an above average keyboard which is comfortable to type on. so since your a college student am guessing your going to to alot of typing.
the y500 has one issue though but not all of them, the track-pad starts to act up after few seconds of operating, the issue is fixed in models made prior to January 2012 so i`ve read but this issue is simply fixed by applying electric isolating tape underneath it.

I would recommend the y500 ( without the track-pad issue)

and since you mentioned you are a college student and your going to be using your laptop for almost everything I would also recommend the lenovo y580 and ASUS N56VZ-DH71 since the y500 and asus g75 has Intel integrated Intel graphics disabled which means their battery life would be relatively short 2 hours max, because the laptop will be working graphics on the gt650 or gtx660 full time, but in the lenovo y580, n56 counterparts the laptop will switch to HD4000 integrated graphics on the I7 to save power and it will give you a 40% more battery power, which would be very important your taking the lappy to take notes in lectures.
one last thing always consider a DVD rom/blue ray, just in case if you needed to borrow discs for the library or for renting movies. not necessary but you should consider it.

I hope this helped, if you need more help please contact me on m.pharma@yahoo.com or eaglespeed@live.com

How do the CPU and GPU in laptops differ from those in desktops?

Q. I am currently a college student and have always preferred a desktop. It also appears that it is possible to get more for your money with a desktop, but I am also wondering what the difference is when an I core 5 or 7 is found in a desktop in comparison to a laptop, as well as the difference in graphics cards...also is this laptop a good deal for the money?

Answer
I will give you some pointers but do your own research,
(1) You don't need the i7 for your needs, because it is a quad core hyper threading processor, and you will never scratch the surface of it's power.

(2) Windows 7 Home Premium was never developed for the i processor
(3) Most of the software you will be using will be 32 bit applications
(4) You will need to buy 64 bit application software in the future

If you must go for the i processor then the i5 is the one to go for, it's cheaper and will do the more than you will ever need to do. Next use an alternative operating that is years a head of MS that have already got the drivers for the i processors and capabilities for hyper threading.

Microsoft will not have these capabilities until the release of windows 8 at the end of this year or sometime in 2012, My advice to you is do your research on the Free Linux kernel (operating system). It is supported and developed by Intel, IBM, AMD, Nvidia, ATI,

Linux runs the worlds fastest HPC (High Powered Computers) It runs it Internet, Check out these web links for your research
http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/newss/7262/1/
Like I said Linux is years ahead of Microsoft's kernel (operating system)

To download the most upto date Linux operating distributions December 2010 and January 2011 then look here

oh you get all the professional application software that you will ever need or want free . including Office applications

I have a toshiba satellite L775, but it has no graphics card. I wanted to know if I got a graphics card if it would run without any problems or if I should get a whole new laptop. I'm going to college in the fall and I won't have my desktop with me... So I really need to figure this out before I leave. PLEASE HELP. And I'm on a budget I can't spend more than $500 on a computer.

Answer
A new generation of video cards and processors will come out by the end of summer 2013, so it may be best to wait until then. You unfortunately can't upgrade to a dedicated card if your laptop only has an integrated card. So a new laptop is your only option.

For now, you can perhaps look into something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215662 It has a GeForce GT 630M graphics card. It is $549.99 now, but it will probably fall in price after the newer cards come out by the time you start college.

Also, your Toshiba Satellite L775 should be able to at least run the Sims 3, though you will have to lower much of the graphical quality. The Sims 3 can run on even older and slower integrated Intel HD integrated graphics cards.

What's a good laptop for an all online college student?

Heather S

I am looking to buy a new laptop, I am taking all online classes and I have some special software I have to install for some classes I will be taking and I am so confused on which type of processor woulf be best for me. All this intel i5 and amd a8..so on..which processor would be best for online students?

Answer
Hi Heather,

Based on the two processors mentioned, the Intel i5 would be better as you can be able to multitask and work with your custom software seamlessly - especially if you'll pair it up with a good graphics card and RAM. You will also be able to do more like play games and use it for entertainment.

Q. I am planning on buying a new computer for graduate school, but I'm doing so on a graduate student budget. I've had an iBook for the past 5 years and would like to get another Mac, but I'd rather not spend that much money. I mainly need something with a good amount of storage space to organize research. I think I'd like another laptop since they're portable, but I'm open to desktop suggestions if that would be the smartest choice for my money.

Answer
Although EVERY Mac fanboy is gonna come out of the woodwork to answer your question, The truth is simple. There is a LOT more software for a PC in this field than there is for a Mac. Although retired recently, I spent over 30 years in industrial networking and machine programming and can tell you first hand that big business and large advertising firms do NOT use Mac computers. Contrary to popular belief, they aren't used in the movie industry either. It's nothing but hype. I also know first hand that regardless of what you can do with a Mac, it does NOT come close to what you can do with a PC. IMHO, a PC is a valuable multi-tool, a Mac is an over priced toy.

What kind or specific brand of laptop is good ?

ablimit

I'm a graduate student majored in computer science. I want to buy a laptop for my work and daily use. Both performance and reasonable price are important to me. At the moment I found IBM T61 is a good choice.
Any suggestion on specific brand or type ?

Answer
the brand that satisfy your needs.

Laptops are excellent for running a second screen.

Two screens are a lot of fun.

I suggest to buy the laptop to suit your travelling needs, and have a second 19 inch screen at main base to plug into.

If you moving the laptop every day, so that you plugging into the main base every day, I suggest to set up a docking station complete with usb mouse and usb keyboard, and of course the second screen.
The docking station sets the laptop at a 45 degree angle so its keyboard is 45 degrees and you hinge open the lid so its vertical.

If you have 19 inch on its own stand, then the top of the laptop is the same height as the top of the 19 inch..

Now you can buy the second screen and docking station later on, and the docking station is not really necessary for home use, but for office use its best practice, so ensure you get a brand that has this available, if you think you need it.

all very sweet and fun to use.

This is from my notes, hope it helps..
Always work out what your needs are and buy a laptop to suit.
Choosing a laptop
=============
You have to decide on weight and battery criteria.

1. Weight - If you are going to carry it to and fro to school/office then consider getting a lightweight model. An external CD drive may be an option as if you not into burning disks or watching DVD then you hardly use the CD drive. Something about less than 2 kg is a lightweight. Anything over 2 kg is very heavy to carry.

2. Battery Life, - if you never going to use it on batteries then you can go bigger processor and larger screen. You can consider not buying the battery if appropriate. You can have two power supplies; one at home and one in the office is good for large heavy laptops.
If you want to use the laptop on batteries then you may have to choose a smaller processor and a smaller screen so you can get the hours required out of the battery.

3. Minimum specifications â
Games will require more specifications â more ram and âmore video card specs â more processor power.
Generally though:
-a decent video card (for projection of power point presentations)
-Wireless networking
-Ethernet
-Consider a high speed hard drive
- Consider 80GB Hard drive or larger
- Consider an external DVD drive or an Internal Burner -depending on your needs
-Consider 1 Gig RAM for XP or 2 Gig RAM for Vista
-Software able to update from their websites
-Internet security and
-Antispyware (free from net) is a must for internet use.
-Easy accessible USB ports
- built in webcam /mic
- A Mouse - wireless mouse are a pain, get a small usb mouse.
- a keystone lock
-A carry bag. Sometimes the manufacturerâs bag is the best buy

Consider getting the hard drive partitioned to C: and D: The C drive can be 30 gig for a laptop D drive is extended across the remaining.

When looking at laptops in the shop do this:
In Vista, Press win key > type in System and click System Information

Go through the results you can see what hardware and what Microsoft products are installed in the laptop/ computer.

Google luck!!!

Vista versus XP:
All laptops are sold with Vista on it, it may be wise to get a higher standard Vista Ultimate because it rocks.. Vista basic will not play DVD unless you download a dvd codec.

In Vista, there are a lot of laptops that the touchpad is to sensitive. When you hover your hand nearby the Vista does weird things. Go to the Mouse console >touchpad and slide the sensitivity slider to halfway.

If you want to install your own XP disks on it first you have to find out if XP has drivers to suit the hardware on your new laptop.
Since you paid for your Vista, keep it.
If you want to load XP consider partition the Hard drive and dual boot. Google âdual boot vista xpâ for step by step instructions but donât forget a third partition for your files so both systems can open your files..

Good buying: I suggest to buy from a discount store that can offer extended warranty, which you may pay for. If you do this make sure all the ram is in so it is covered by the warranty. Extended warranty will cover it for 3 years, and a lot of laptops do go wrong.

Ok, I'm in middle school (7th grade) and I'm trying to get laptops in school next year for 8th grade. But, the problem is, I don't know how. I've already written a letter and I'm sending it tomorrow (April 19th, 2010) to the principal, but what do I do after that?

Plus, with the whole business of "Webcam Used To Spy On Kids At Home" business going around, I don't know if it will come to be! Please, if any of you have any info on this, please give me some tips!

Answer
some advice, if you want laptops, try to find cheap yet affordable ones. good thing is, students who do work on laptops dont need dual core processors, high rate memory cards, huge screen, or a ton of RAM. try looking for this...

single core processor
1 GB of RAM
try to find a small, but not too small so it comes down to expensive price becuase its so *portable*
if your worried about the webcam, write down every software it comes with. then, if they come, check to see if they downloaded anything or make them sign something promising they dont spy.

try to avoid sites like

gateway.com they only sell high rate computers and laptops

and try to find something on

hp.com
or
dell.com

How do I convince my parents to buy me laptop?

Katie

I will be in high school this year. My family all shares one computer. Everyday I have homework on the computer. My little sister always plays games on it when I need to use it for my homework. As I get into high school and she goes to middle school, we will both be needing it more. I am not old enough to get a job, otherwise I would. They are not really opposed to the idea, but they don't really want to. I get good grades and I am very responsible. How can I convince them to buy me a laptop?

Answer
I think telling them that having a laptop is essential to your development as a student in addition to the amount of information you have at your finger tips in a mobile setting is really probably the best way to argue and present your side.

Also price could be good. I actually just bought a laptop after over 10 days of looking and found an a pretty cool deal. Theres a seller on Amazon called "Electronic Mind" that is selling some really powerful Acer Aspires way below retail value and has the lowest price on Amazon all together.

Here is the link:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YD9K1K?ie=UTF8&seller=A2Q11VP7A3L0BR&sn=Electonic%20Mind

I dont know how they can sell them so cheap but I have had mine now for 2 weeks and I am very happy with my brand new laptop.

With Acer Aspire you cant go wrong. and with this price I think your parents will be happy

Ok. Here we go. I am buying a computer for college. I will use it to type papers, browse the internet, stream videos, and itunes. I have narrowed it down to these two...

http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-ENVY/E4T18AV?HP-ENVY-TouchSmart-15t-j000-Quad-Edition-Notebook-PC

http://shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-ENVY/C9G48AV?HP-ENVY-TouchSmart-15t-j000-Select-Edition-Notebook-PC

I am worried because I have not found any professional reviews (cnet or pcmag) and the select version does not have any customer reviews either (both computers came out this summer). I get the student discount which makes the quad $795 and the select $669.

I was just going to buy the quad, but after doing some research, I am not sure I need all of the power it has. The biggest difference I can see between the processor (i7 or i5). I have an i3 now, so I am sure either would be faster.

I am also worried about the difference in graphics (4600 vs 4000). Is it a big difference? I want the videos I watch to be pretty good, but I probably don't need top of the line (I'm assuming).
So basically I am asking if the extras on the quad would even be used with what I am doing on a computer.

I would prefer cheaper, but if it is worth it to pay the extra money, I will pay for it.

(I am upgrading to a full HD screen)

Answer
Most professors hate cell and smart phones, don't care for computers in a classroom, have little reference to video outside of those shown in class and have little space/time requirements for units on desks and time to set them up. Most classes are eighty minutes and it's hard to get that kind of battery performance without being plugged into the wall, and think if you have two to four classes per day what the ramifications are. Colleges provide computers in their libraries and computer labs to assist in completing homework. They are slow to upgrade browsers and major software. There is little need for a laptop at all. A home PC is where to put your money and you will need Microsoft Office 2010 and above. It will suffice for dorm or home. The college bookstores and Microsoft offer the academic software at a significantly reduced price, but only if you are enrolled in a class requiring it, like Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Publisher. Microsoft polices their products-diligently. An inexpensive laptop with 3G RAM and Windows 7 is the best investment. One good drop can send a laptop to the junk pile; don't go for a high end machine that can go south just as easy, when a cheaper unit will do all the necessary things for you and it is not as likely to be stolen. Hardware will be more economical and available for any necessary replacements as you go down the road. It is unlikely institutions will go for another operating system for several years and most of them just recently switched to Office 2010-I doubt there will be any changes from now, until when you get a Bachelors Degree in about 2016. The key to college is between your ears and requires ten hours of homework, weekly, for each class attended and is mostly about sticking your nose in the book. It would be best to invest in a digital recorder with Dragon capability dictation quality and record all of your classes. It can be discreet if needed, easy to use, cheap to operate and/or replace and help with your note taking, especially when the lights are out during a class video. It allows you to attend the class multiple times, doesn't forget anything, can be kept on all digital storage devices and emailed to any classmates unable to attend, or that cannot afford a recording unit. Sony wrote the book on dictation/Dragon capable digital recorders. Several hundred hours can be accumulated on the recorder in multiple folders or downloaded after each use. Your book bag will be plenty heavy and the laptop will be even more to carry, whether it is shouldered or in a rolling case, and become quite a burden. Left in a vehicle to extremes of cold and heat, as well as risk of theft, can be detrimental to a laptop. Wi-Fi sites are famous for hackers to mess with your life by chasing laptop compromises and glitches. Spend some more good money getting good anti-virus software-contracts on the units with IYOGI would do you well each year you are in school, on the home PC and a laptop for sustained and high quality use. I still go to college for five years straight, now, and will finish my current degree this December, 2013. I, also, work in the Science Dept. for all of the Biology, Microbiology, Physiology, Chemistry and Physics professors and take care of all the labs and environmental cabinets. All of the students I witness in these and my computer labs, I am a Computer Science major in programming skills, do not use laptops in classes, nor do I see them being carried. Geek guys like me have one, but with wireless keyboards and conventional mouse. The laptop has a compromised keyboard arrangement and the wireless is just like all others-eliminating having to learn two different patterns. A laptop keyboard wears out in about a year and is a pain to change. I can spend thirty bucks and get a new wireless keyboard and mouse quickly, leaving my laptop looking like new and less likely to have problems like dead keys and such. Don't pre-suppose the laptop issue. They are inherently slow, no matter how much RAM they have, and are very short lived. You will need competent Word skills immediately in all of your classes-go there get that right now! Take this class first and get the software and take little else as you do, preferably math or other computer class, like PowerPoint, or Excel. Note: pick a good minor that will employ you anywhere at a decent wage entry level, like Accounting, Office management courses, and management or Economics. This way you can work as you need and it will let you look for the big job when you're done, instead of low or zero pay internment. Lots to know before you go. Luck!

I'm at a standstill with these two laptops: ASUS-U46E-BAL5 or SAMSUNG QX411-WO1?
They are particularly similar in specs and all, but I don't know on which one that is best.
PCMAG.com, a PC review site, listed these with the same ratings which shows how great they are.

My question is which one would be best for a college student that enjoys gaming (the games I play do not have hardcore graphics)?

Also, I was wondering if both of these had any Microsoft program applications for a student's productivity for homework, essays and such. Thanks again.

Answer
The samsung will be much better for any type of gaming. The other laptop only has an integrated graphics card. The integrated card will MAYBE push out middle graphics from two year old games.
