What is the best laptop computer for a college student?

Jake

I'm going to be attending school in the fall, and my uncle is offering to buy a laptop. Neither one of us (or anyone in my family for that matter) knows much about computers, so I was just curious as to what the best laptop is, and a rough estimate of the price.

Iâd recommend checking out the âLaptop Scoutâ application. Itâs a great resource for comparing different models and helping you get the best value and performance for your money. Hereâs a link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-laptop-scout/default.aspx
Just go to the site and enter what kind of things youâre looking for in a laptop (RAM, disk space, etc), and itâll provide you with a list of potential PCs that match your specifications. It also provides links to Cnet reviews, so you can do some real in-depth comparisons while you look.
A lot depends on your budget, but a couple of mid-ranged computers that pop up during a quick Laptop Scout search based on your specifications include the Dell Studio 15 ($1099, 4GB of RAM) or the Sony VIAO FW355 ($1129.99, 4 GB of Ram, Blu-Ray drive). Those are also pretty portable, which means itâll be easy to take them to class with you.
Thereâs a much longer list of available laptops, as well as a bunch of other customizable options on Laptop Scout, so Iâd recommend that you head there and customize what you want to see what comes up.
Good luck, I hope you find this useful!

Laptop Computer for around $600 (College Student)?

Chris

Okay so here's the deal: I'm purchasing a new laptop this weekend before I go off to school for the fall. I would like it to be around $600, but I honestly don't know much about computers... Here's what I want out of it:

- Fairly light/portable (no need for an ultrabook, just not too bulky)
- Numerical Keypad
- Good keyboard (I will be doing A LOT of typing)
- Able to run basic movie/streaming/music type programs with no problem
- As much speed as possible
- The "average" add-ons (USB, HDMI, webcam, etc.)

I am not too worried about gaming or rendering capabilities, I won't be doing much of that outside of class. What I'm really focused on is a fast, reliable computer for day-to-day tasks and school assignments.

Thanks for the help!

with either one of these laptops you get a free Xbox 360 and a discount on office plus they tweak the computer so it works at max speed
