A dell XPS or a Thinkpad T series could be really nice. If you don't mind a very small screen an Thinkpad X61 would be really light and awesome.

Hi
Get a Compaq or Acer for your money. They come fully loaded and are very reliable. For a student , I suggest the Compaq because it is very sturdy. Also, it doesn;t need any CD or software or windows since the recovery system is on a D-partition.
So if anything ever happens, you just reboot and hit F12 and bingo, the computer will fix itself and give you back your windows without losing any old data whatsoever. Very useful at times ;-)
