Laptop/ notebook for college?

Orangie

I"m getting redy to buy a laptop for college next fall! i want to get a jump start . one less thing to pay for when it come up. i want to be a photographer so that mean i'll be a art mager! the art lab at a lot of school i thinking about have mac's lab. should i get a mac our just a pc? does it matter? what would you do? how much should i speened?

Answer
With OS X Leopard, you can install Windows (use XP, not that awful Vista) on your Mac so it doesn't really matter.

Most colleges are very Mac-friendly and typically only some math and business schools have strong preferences for PC laptops. However, fine arts and photography in general has a strong Mac culture so I would recommend sticking with Apple. No viruses and spyware so far!

New MacBook Pro's are expected to be announced in January so there may be some good deals on existing MacBook Pro laptops now. Also, the MacBook went from a minor "A" to "B" revision so there are discounted "A" models (less maximum RAM, older video card) out there.

Keep in mind that there's a discount for higher education students. A letter of intent or acceptance letter is usually sufficient to get the higher ed discount.

As far as spending, anywhere from around $1000 to $2000.
(A select handful of college bookstores have prices lower than Apple's higher ed site.) A MacBook with a Superdrive is what you'll need, minimally. A MacBook Pro gets you a larger screen and keyboard, some performance boost (like longer battery life, Firewire 800) as well as a better video card.

I also recommend AppleCare, so you'll be guaranteed an operational computer and tech support (out of Austin, TX) for three years. Most universities have a discounted student license for Microsoft Office (Office 2008 will be out in a couple months) that costs less than the student-teacher edition you find in stores. The academic version of Photoshop is several hundred dollars less than the consumer version, so buy it from the college store.

Good luck and happy shooting!

im going into 11th grade and im finally buying a laptop. im probably going to use this in college as well, so ive been looking around and im not sure what to get. definitely a backlit keyboard, as wel as speed and dependability. just something good for school-with powerpoint, word, etc. also a good computer to upload my pictures too, since i LOVE photography. ive been looking at the sony vaio s series, and i like it alot but its so expensive! i want the 13 inch screen size, and compact/thin design. is there anything better out there?

Answer
Probably a macbook, those are the best right now and for photography you will want something more powerful than Windows.
