Tablet PC or Laptop for a college Student?

Nick J

I'm going off to college in the fall and am trying to find a computer to purchase. I was thinking of purchaseing a Tablet PC but I'm not sure because the screen on the tablet is so small. I was wondering if anyone had any advise as to which is better suited for the college enviroment: a small Tablet or a reqular size laptop? Also, any advise as to what a good laptop/tablet is to purchase and which companies have the best customer service? Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
For a typical college environment, there will be lots of note-taking. Tablet PC's are best at this sort of task. You can take notes with a regular laptop by just typing them as you go through the lecture, but you may want to make certain notes that would be difficult to make on a laptop (mathematical symbols, charts, graphics, lines, highlights, etc.). Tablet PCs, obviously, do not have this problem.

Besides, a tablet PC doubles as *both* your notebook/sketchpad and a normal laptop. For a bit more money out of your wallet, you are effectively killing two birds with one stone at a bargain price.

Most tablets have either 12.1" or 13.3" screen sizes. These are actually decently sized, so you won't have to worry about them being too small. As I have recommended to other students, I'll reiterate my list of tablet PCs here:

The Axiotron Modbook is a Mac-based tablet PC: http://axiotron.com/index.php?id=modbook

The HP TX2000 series are nice, semi-powerful, small little tablets: http://h20247.www2.hp.com/hho/cache/572546-0-0-225-121.html

The ASUS R1 series are powerful, medium-sized tablets: http://event.asus.com/2006/nb/r1/eng/

Lenovo X series are portable and generous on the battery life, but lack a bit in the processing power department: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/notebooks/thinkpad/x-series-tablet

Hope this helps. You won't regret having a tablet PC.

Why do college students prefer MAC over PC? WTF?

Okay, first of all, are you kidding me.

Macs are for people who fit at least one of the following criteria:
1. Are rich and feel like flushing an extra $2,000 down the toilet.
2. Do not game.
3. Are too stupid to learn how to use PC's (which is really easy. In fact, mac is more complicated).

I dont get it. Why do COLLEGE students prefer macs?

I thought college students are the poor ones who love gaming and who are trying to be smart by going to college. Kinda contradicts the whole thing, don't ya think?

Answer
* Mac laptops have the longest battery life in the industry. College students can use their computer all day without a recharge.
* Mac laptops are the lightest on the market but are also tough enough to take the knocks and jostles when carrying them in a backpack around campus.
* iBooks on the Mac means they don't have to carry a ton of books around all day. They can have all the college textbooks on their computer with easy search and find.
* Macs are in fact easier and more consistent to use than PCs are.
* their usable lifespan will take college students through their entire degree and longer. Many Macs average at least 6 years lifespan. My own old Powerbook G4 still runs fine at 10 years old.
* The software that comes with Macs is full featured and offers students everything they need right out of the box. They can write papers, do presentations for class tutorials right out of the box without adding any extra software.
* Macs use a far more secure operating system than Windows PCs do.
* They can have Windows running natively on a dual boot partition if they choose. So they can do anything Windows PCs can do if they want to.
* It runs UNIX under the hood, which is a big bonus if they are studying subjects in the sciences or engineering.
* Macs have the best return on investment of any consumer computer. They hold their value, and they are very cheap to maintain. They simply don't break down like PCs do.
