Is this a good laptop for an engineering student?

Toby

Ive been searching around for quite sometime now and I think this is a good deal. It comes with a $200 gift card for dell also.

I shouldn't have any problems running any kind of programs with this right? It seems like a very strong computer

Answer
The Dell Inspiron 15R Touch isn't really a good option. Really, even if you count that $200 as $200 off the system (which it isn't really, since you're limited to Dell purchases), the laptop would hardly even be worth $749.

The issue with the 15R Touch that puts it so far off from being a good choice, is that its display is a 15.6" 1366x768 display. A 15.6" 1366x768 display is not a type of display you want. It's an issue plaguing a number of laptops and is something you want to avoid when you can do so. 1366x768 resolution in a 15.6" display makes things onscreen large (the resolution doesn't let you fit much onscreen to begin with), and 15.6" displays that have 1366x768 resolution are almost always low-grade LCD panels with very poor image quality due to low contrast. The display is an important consideration, because it has a huge effect on your user experience -- both in terms of how much you can fit onscreen due to the resolution itself, and in terms of display quality that creates its impression continuously. You want to make a point to get a decent display once it gets to be reasonable to do so. Much of this is avoiding displays such as the 15R's 1366x768 -- which isn't a "decent" display, it's actually pretty bad.

Assuming you're going for the touchscreen, these models are much better options for touchscreen-equipped laptops.

**ASUS Q550LF** (NVIDIA GTX 745M, 15.6" 1920x1080 IPS) - **$999**

**ASUS N550JV** (NVIDIA GT 750M GDDR3, 15.6" 1920x1080 IPS) - **$999**
- http://microcenter.com/product/415320/N550JV-DB72T_156_Laptop_Computer_-_Grey_Aluminum
- Note: The specs page is wrong about the display. A number of people have bought this model and reported that the display is indeed a 15.6" 1920x1080 with IPS-grade viewing angles, like ASUS' website for the model indicates.

**Sony Vaio Fit 15E** (NVIDIA GT 740M, 15.6" 1920x1080)

- Select the NVIDIA GT 740M if you think you'll use the laptop for games. (get the cheaper 1GB version. 1GB of video is sufficient. Video memory isn't what game performance primarily depends on.) Engineering software might also be a reason to want the GT 740M, but it really depends what software.
- I'd recommend the above two models over this one. The battery life on this model isn't supposed to be particularly spectacular. This is more to provide a model cheaper than the 15R Touch that's still a better choice.

EDIT: Here's another. No dedicated GPU, so won't be particularly spectacular if you want to use it to run games, but it's less expensive than the similar but dedicated GPU equipped Q550LF.

**ASUS Q501LA** (15.6" 1920x1080 IPS) - **$749**

What is the best laptop for an architecture/civil engineering student?

Jesse

I have started saving up my money for a laptop for college but I don't know what I want. I'm going into either architecture, or civil engineering so I would like it to be able to run the AutoCAD/Autodesk software without any trouble at all . Please don't tell me what specs I want because I have a pretty good idea of what I will need, plus I can barely understand them anyway. I just want to know what type, brand, or model of laptop would be best for me. I would like to spend somewhere between $1000-$1200. However, I would be more than willing to move around on that if it means getting a better, longer lasting laptop.

Answer
You have good enough budget to have a good laptop. As you are an engineering student so I would recommend Macbook Pro to you. It has good features and also it performs really well for the engineering students as one of an actual user says that it does the tasks of an engineering student without any problems. Here is a complete comment for your help:

Also it has good features but I wont mentioned them as you don't want us to tell. But definitely it is one good option for students like you with the price of around $1000. On the other hand you can look into market for other options as well. For your ease here is a list of laptops which are under $1200 and also popular ones:
