Answer
I think one of the main things to consider when buying a computer is the processor, the type of processor you have impacts speed and your ability to do more than one task at a time. ( And so does memory, but unlike memory processors can be expensive to upgrade ) Since processors can be so expensive to upgrade, I would recommend buying a computer with the fastest processor that is within reason. ( at some point the price begins to get significantly higher without as much increase in speed )

Memory ( RAM ) is also important for the speed of the computer, it is easier to upgrade later than other things, but I would recommend starting at 3 GB of RAM, but 4 GB would be better.

I'm not sure why so many people are down on Windows Vista, I haven't had much trouble with it, and I can't think of anything that I have had trouble with that hasn't been resolved.

I found a review from Cnet.com that list retail laptops and rates them, if you are considering buying from retail stores this may be helpful.

I am partial to Dell, they often have good prices on computers and you can specify what you want, so you can upgrade the processor and memory, and if you buy a computer with a faster processor I believe it will increase the time that it is serviceable to you. ( I mean it won't become " outdated " as quickly. ) You can check out Dell's website to look around:

I hope that this is helpful, and I hope you find the laptop that you are looking for and that suits all your needs.

sincerely,
your friend, andrew

I'm going back to college and going for associates in medical support. I want to get a smaller laptop and I think I want a dell mini. I just dunno what all they can do. Can they play cds, dvds, burn them? Should I get XP Home or XP Professional Edition on it. I dunno how much Ghz & Ram etc...I will need. I want something as small as possible & simple. Basicly to hold music and class work.

Answer
There is really no BEST laptop brand as manufacturers all have produced "Gold" and "Lemons" in their time.

Most answers will tell you to buy "THIS" or "THAT" brand because it is the best, just remember that it is the best for THEM not for you.

Most people will tell you of a best "brand" but their actual answer is based on the MODEL they have not the entire brand and you should not judge a company by ONE model as they make hundreds of them.

Please remember that ALL consumer-level Laptops / Notebooks / Netbooks are built for PORTABILITY and not for DURABILITY or LONGEVITY.

If you want your laptop to last, just take good care of it, whatever brand you end up getting !

This being said, here is how to do more precise research to find the best one for YOU:

The first step is to get information on the laptops that you are interested in and, as a second step, to search online at web stores (like Amazon or similar) or at retail shops (BestBuy, staples or similar) for the best deals on the ones you would really like to have based on your search.

This way, you get the best working laptops at the best prices.

As laptop specs change often, it is good to get non-vendor/non-partisan/non-groupie information so you should do some checking on these review/guide sites to help fine tune your search.

At each site, start by checking models and then compare them with others (or against each other) by choosing different options using boxes and drop down menus to customize the search and get what you want in your laptop ( there is even a way on some of those sites to look by inputting the price you are willing to pay to minimize the impact on your wallet ).

Your time will not be wasted (after all, you get all this from the comfort of your home) and you should find something to your liking and budget.

Good luck on your research.

P.S.: By the way, I own a Dell ;) but it's an older model (2002) on the way out soon (to be replaced by a still unknown brand as I will be doing research).
