she had already decided she is taking geography if she gets in. (working for a) her cdt she will take Cad Cam - computer aided design , computer aided manufacturer. (working for b)

what would be more appropriate?

Answer
Hi,

If she's planning to learn CAD, I think it would be worth finding out what CAD packages she will be using at school and if the school provides access to the free /student versions of the software for her to run on her own computer.

Some of the newer 3D CAD packages require high spec computers to run smoothly. You can probably find out the spec required at the CAD software's website.

Generally speaking, high spec laptops cost a lot more than equivalent spec desktop computers,
so I would only recommend high spec laptop if she really needs it to run CAD apps & work on the move.

If she doesn't need to run the CAD software on her machine, any standard laptop should do.

Dell offer good range of CAD spec laptops & desktops with their Precision range, but they are expensive.

A cheaper option would be to look at a gaming spec machine, as these also tend to have fast CPU's, plenty of memory memory & high powered graphics.

A good laptop for a GCSE student?

I need a good laptop because I'm starting my GCSEs in September.
My budget is £300.
I need it for coursework and research, so any chance they already have Microsoft Office? (Not just a trial)
Thanks!!

Answer
You can use a search engine like

www.google.com

http://www.google.com/products

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=online+computer+stores+uk&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

and with any luck you can find an online or local computer store that sells a good laptop for your use.

And you can also get free alternatives to Microsoft Office.

The best Microsoft Office compatible suite that I use on my own work laptop is the Kingsoft Office 2007 Free Personal suite version.

It is compatible with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint:

The installation file is stored in a zip file so you will need a program like Winzip or ExtractNow (which you can get from www.download.com) to unzip the file and extract the installation program for the Kingsoft Office 2007 Free Personal Edition.

I use the Kingsoft Office 2007 Free Edition suite on my own work laptop mainly because the menu interface for this suite is similar to Microsoft Office 2003 and so I find it easier to use.

Here is a website that gives more information about the Kingsoft Office 2007 free version:

Good Luck and I hope this will meet your needs!
