I'm going to be attending school in the fall, and my uncle is offering to buy a laptop. Neither one of us (or anyone in my family for that matter) knows much about computers, so I was just curious as to what the best laptop is, and a rough estimate of the price.

Answer
Iâd recommend checking out the âLaptop Scoutâ application. Itâs a great resource for comparing different models and helping you get the best value and performance for your money. Hereâs a link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-laptop-scout/default.aspx
Just go to the site and enter what kind of things youâre looking for in a laptop (RAM, disk space, etc), and itâll provide you with a list of potential PCs that match your specifications. It also provides links to Cnet reviews, so you can do some real in-depth comparisons while you look.
A lot depends on your budget, but a couple of mid-ranged computers that pop up during a quick Laptop Scout search based on your specifications include the Dell Studio 15 ($1099, 4GB of RAM) or the Sony VIAO FW355 ($1129.99, 4 GB of Ram, Blu-Ray drive). Those are also pretty portable, which means itâll be easy to take them to class with you.
Thereâs a much longer list of available laptops, as well as a bunch of other customizable options on Laptop Scout, so Iâd recommend that you head there and customize what you want to see what comes up.
Good luck, I hope you find this useful!

What is the best laptop to buy for a student?

Q. For highschool, or college. I would prefer a lower price, good battery life, and enough power to play an RTS without lagging too much. It doesn't have to be very light, but portable. Thanks!
By the way, if it isn't too much trouble, could you include a link to a review of the laptop in question?
I would also prefer Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo if possible

Answer
eBay has low prices for new and used laptops. I entered some search terms for "buy it now" listings including your "centrino core 2 duo" and I added "nvidia" since you said you play RTS games. Most RTS games will need a video card. You could replace "nvidia" with "ati" and check those prices as well.

You could find one you like and search for the reviews on google or cnet. My personal experience with laptops has been that HP, Sony and Dell are all good quality, in that order.

Have fun! I hope you get a nice gaming rig. I play some old RTS games myself. Command and Conquer:Generals is my favorite one.

Hope that helps.
