I'm a sophomore in high school getting a new computer. Everyone told me a laptop was better b/c its good for college but:

LAPTOP=same quality more expensive, worse until college, 1 comp for both media and work
DESKTOP=same quality cheaper, take with me to college, buy cheap laptop just for work.

Is it normal for college students to have both?
The desktop I have in mind is an imac and if not I still have an extra monitor/keyboard/mouse lying around.

Answer
Normal really depends. My brother had a medicore laptop and a very nice desktop in my college. My sister finds she only needs a laptop. Its your preference really. If you like the mobility of laptops and feel that you dont need anything adesktop offers (more ability, game playing) dont get one, or get a low end, basic rig. But if you feel laptops are only good for taking to class to take notes or get internet in the cafeteria, get a mediocore laptop and a better desktop. In short, it is really an opinion thing and it isnt unusual for a college student to have both if one is good and the other jsut ok. I would advise against getting two high end computers though. It is overkill.

What would be the best quality and cheapest laptop to purchase besides a mac?

I'm a college student and my mac book just crapped out on me. I'm looking to buy a new laptop for cheap but I want something that will last me. (macs are above my budget) I only need internet, word, music, and pics. Any opinions or advise would help greatly!

Answer
Unless the motherboard is shot, your MacBook did NOT crap out on you.

Go to Apple.com and schedule an appointment with the Genius Bar. Have them look it over and get it fixed properly.

Aside from the basic MacBook, you won't find anything that is as powerful or reliable. Browse refurbished models: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/macbook
