I am looking for a good solid, fast computer that will be durable and last for about 4-5 years

Answer
Depending on what your needs are for the student. Most laptops are made to be replaced after 2-3 years no matter the make, model, or manufacturer.

If the student is an artistic or in the liberal arts, I would reluctantly comply with others and say a Mac Book Pro would be better. A Mac Book Air (thin) is really unreliable an they fall apart fairly quickly, but overall Macs are EXTREMELY expensive but somewhat reliable. Those in the liberal arts are more apt for it.

If the student is a logical type. Math, Science, or Technology related, I suggest a PC. Look at Dell (XPS, Alienware), Toshiba (Qosimo, Satelite [high-end]), Acer (high-end), or Asus (High-End). A PC with a good antivirus (free: Avira Antivirus) and anti-spyware (Malwarebytes) would go a long way with keeping a computer free from harm.

A mac would go for about $900-$2000. Around $1300 for a decently sized-configured model. Usually a 15-inch MacBook Pro with 500GB HD and 4GB-6GB of RAM, i5 Intel CPU.

A PC would go for about $700-$1600. A FULLY-LOADED PC would be at $1400. That's a top of the line, and long-lasting PC. 15 or 17-inch screen, 1TB (1000GB) Hard Drive, i7 Intel Processor, and 6GB-8GB RAM.

For the $, Dollar for dollar a PC is the better way to go.

What specifications should be in a macbook for a college student?

I am going to buy a mac, what memory Ram and hard drive space should I get for a macbook? I am a college student; I just want to use the laptop for school work and maybe some video. I am not a videogamer nor a professional. Please help me decide the specifications. Do you know for how long the batterie run before it has to be plug the wall?

Thank you.

Answer
I'd get 13 In. screen w/ 2 Ghz, 512 RAM, 60 GB hard drive, and a Superdrive

You can always add RAM later.

As for the battery, it really depends on how much charge is currently left on it. There are 2 ways to check this: 1. the top right cornor, look fior the battery icon/text. 2. On the bottom, there will be 5 lights, and a button, press the button, and the light will light up. the more lights, the more charge)
