I saw this commercial where a student was in class with his laptop and the teach was giving a lecture. While the teacher was speaking the students laptop was taking what the teacher was saying and putting it into (text) notes for him. What program was the student using and where can I get it?

Answer
That ad is just a little bit bullsh!t, a speech to text prog is not going to be that good when trying to record a speaker at the other end of the room with a laptop mic, but , under more realistic circumstances this type of software can work really well. Have a look at Dragon Naturally Speaking- http://www.nuance.com/for-individuals/by-product/dragon-for-pc/index.htm

What is a good laptop for students majoring in petroleum engineering?
Hi, I am going to be entering college this year to be studying petroleum engineering. I was wonder what laptop should I buy for school. My budget is about $1700, and I do not care if it is windows or mac.
Thank you

Answer
In the past, you needed Windows to run popular CAD programs. Now, most of the popular softwares run on Mac OS X as well, such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks. I highly recommend Apple for the following reasons:

1. Durability - Its unibody enclosure is machined from a solid block of aluminum. The result is a notebook that is thin and light, looks polished and refined, and feels strong and durable. Also, the inside components are all custom designed by Apple to fit together perfectly, extending the life of the computer.
2. Battery life - seven hour battery (and it actually is seven hours, I know from experience). If you're taking notes all day this is crucial.
3. Innovative features - The little things do matter. Apple is a company that takes these details into account. Consider the MagSafe power connector that breaks cleanly away from the notebook if you trip over the power cord. This kinds of features are everywhere throughout the inside and outside of Apple computers.
4. Performance - equipped with blazing-fast Intel processors, high-performance graphics, and high-speed DDR3 memory. And OS X is custom-made to take advantage of every bit of that technology. You get superior performance for just about everything you do: managing your photos, editing video, even playing graphics-intensive 3D games.
5. Environmentally friendly - Apple is one of the most environmentally friendly computer companies out there. They're energy efficient and use fewer toxic substances like arsenic and mercury. Also, they're made of high quality aluminum and glass -- both very recyclable.
6. Comes with great software - You don't need to get very much extra software because it's all built in. If you do need something, it's easy to access with the Mac App Store.
7. The hardware and software are designed to work together. Think about it. If you buy a PC, it will be running Windows no matter what. Windows wasn't designed to work with a particular computer. OS X was.
8. Built in security.
9. Automatic backup with Time Machine -- you don't know how many times I've accidentally deleted a term paper or a set of notes. Time Machine has saved me.
10. GREAT customer support.

Those are the main reasons why Mac is a great option and an excellent investment. You pay for high quality. You'll have your Mac forever, whereas most PCs will need replacing within two or three years (in my experience with HP and Acer).

The best Apple laptop option for you is:

13-inch Macbook Pro for $1,489 (the original price is $1,599, you save $110 because you've been accepted to college)
2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i7
Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
8GB 1600MHz memory
1TB 5400-rpm hard drive
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Built-in battery (7 hours)

This laptop is top of the line. Very fast i7 processor (with Turbo Boost technology), 8 GB of RAM, and plenty of storage. It's the perfect computer for you.

You can always go into an Apple store for a second opinion. In my experience they're very helpful in pairing you with the right computer for your needs.

I hope this helps!
