How to take notes on Laptop for highschool?

I'm a freshmen and for some classes we're allowed to use laptops. What programs should, or could I use to write notes. Doing it on Microsoft word would be okay I guess. But I just want to know what you use or what you'd use. Thanks!

Microsoft Office Student version works for word documents and more.
I use Microsoft Word and Open Office Suite word processor bot work and are compatible.
You can create word documents using note pad. word pad or MS word, I prefer Microsoft Word.
Open Office is free at http://www.openoffice.org and Microsoft Office Student version cost you.
You just open MS Word create the document and click files then click save and name the document.
It stores a list of all your word documents you can open any of them, edit them or print them. add pictures and more.

I'm a college student in engineering and long story short i don't have a computer so I'm getting a laptop. But what programs will I be using so I can get a laptop that will run those programs.

So far the only program I know for sure I will be using is solid works
anything else?
