I am soon going to be entering into a community college for my associate degree in computer programming, and i was wondering if I will need my own laptop for the papers and assignments etc. I won't be staying at the college I will be living at home. We do have a couple of laptops at home but both of them have problems (one doesn't connect to wifi and the other always have to be plugged in otherwise it will die), so that makes them immobile. Please help guys I am really confused as to should i buy a laptop or not. I don't want to come to college unprepared.

Serious answerers only, Thanks!

Answer
The rules vary by school and class, but most professors insist that laptops be shut and cell phones turned off while in class. However, there is time between classes, and often a laptop comes in handy to do some of the required homework and assignments during the day. Also, some work is done in libraries and having your own laptop is a big aid.
There are some private schools that actually give all students a laptop. That is to assure everyone has one and uniformity in connections to get and provide information for registration, etc.

A laptop is now considered an essential tool, just as a book and pen and paper are tools.
It doesn't need to be fancy, and portability (smaller) is a plus.

If you have a laptop not connecting to wifi you can buy a USB wireless adapter for about $15 at Newegg, Amazon, Tigerdirect, Best Buy, Radio Shack, or other stores.

If the battery is worn on a laptop, you can buy a replacement battery.

With a degree and studies being in computer programming, though the classes may have desktop PCs in them, it is possible they will require you have a laptop.

Used and new laptops can be bought for under $300, though about $400 buys a lot more in performance, features, and reliability. For now, call it HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, but later you may find it is required by your school. You can often call ahead and ask them, but they should be telling you soon enough. There are often back to school sales, and clearances are already occuring for the switch in Intel level cpus. May check a local Best Buy for their clearance items.

I'm buying a laptop for college, what is the best laptop that cost at least 700 dollars?

I have to spend at least 700.00 due to my dads corporate discount.

Ideas please!

Answer
Since you need to spend at least 700 and you need the computer for college, I would go with the 13 inch macbook pro with the 2.53 GHz processor for 1400 after student discount.

The macbook pro has a 2.53 GHz intel core 2 duo processor, 4GB DDR3 ram(most PC's under 1000 have DDR2, a slower type of ram), 250 GB hard drive. These specs are ideal when choosing a laptop that will easily get you through 4+ years of college.

The macbook pro has a solid aluminum unibody frame that is both stronger and better looking than plastic PC's. Also, aluminum is a great material for transferring heat(Its like aluminum foil thats been heated in an oven, when you take it out it is immediately cool to the touch). The aluminum body will easily transfer heat from the core to the surrounding air, keeping the inside much cooler. Plastic is like a semi-insulator. While it doesnt act like styrofoam, it doesnt actively get reduce heat, resulting in a hotter core and potential for system meltdowns and overall CPU crashes.

Macbook Pro comes with iLife 09, which is an excellent software suite when compared to windows bundled software. iLife 09 comes with iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb, and something that windows doesnt have, Garageband(a powerful music creation program that can also be used to create presentations and podcasts).

Macbook Pros have the best operating system out on the market. OS X Leapord is a very easy and stable OS that rarely crashes and can be left running for weeks without needing to be rebooted due to performance loss(try that with windows). Also, say goodbye to expensive antivirus software as there are virtually no viruses related to macs.

The macbook pro has new battery technology that triumphs over PC's of similar price and specs. The battery will last 7 hours and can be recharged up to 1000 times before needing to be replaced. Most PC batteries can only be recharged 300 times before needing replaced.

You may hear people say that PC's have more software available, but half of that software is older versions that wont even run on vista, and the stuff that does work for vista is mostly crappy half rate software that is useless. Mac has at least 10,000 different software for its OS, and if you can't find something you need in that list, then you can always run windows on you mac and get the windows software you need. As for compatability, since apple moved to intel processors, there is very little a PC can run that a mac can't. And with the ability to run windows on a mac, you can be very compatable with the PC world. Since you are in college, the most you will ever need software wise is microsoft office, and there are mac versions of office like office 2004 or 2008 for mac. Office for mac is compatable with windows PC's even while working under the mac OS.

Sure, PC's have a lower initial cost, but Macs are cheaper when it comes to total cost of ownership. When comparing a 1000$ PC and a 1400$ macbook pro, the mac will eventually be cheaper. While macs need no virus protection, a PC(using Norton Internet Security) will cost at least 100 dollars over a 4 year period. Over a 4 year period, the mac might have to change a battery once(apple rates their batteries for 5 years of use before needing replaced), while PC's will need to replace once or twice, costing at least 200$ if replaced twice compared to apples 100$ for a possible replacement. With windows and macs new operating systems coming out, apple is only charging 30$ for an upgrade to snow leapord, while windows is charging 200$ for windows 7. Finally, PC's are often poorly designed and will break down often. So be prepared to spend time on the phone with customer support as you dish out cash to replace parts. Macs are solid machines, with the OS and internal components created together to provide a very reliable machine. So for replacement parts for the PC over a 4 year period, you might need to dish out 100-200$.

So, overall, the mac is the better deal. It is much more stylish than any PC out there, and it is a very fast and stable machine that will easily get you through 4+ years of college without a problem. Go with the mac, you won't regret it!
