College student looking for a tablet to take notes on?

I am a non-art major student. I am looking for a cheap (under 500$) tablet with handwriting recognition. I do not want to have to be connected to a laptop in order to use it. I just want a tablet with a stylus that I can write on. I have heard good things about Wacom however it seems that those are just for drawing and photoshop, or they have to be connected to a laptop to use. Help? Suggestions?

Well i will be entering college in the fall and im not to sure what laptop is the best or what exactly im looking for..i know i need a laptop with a good amount of memory, portable and under 500 would be nice ( if lower even better) i would like one that has a webcam and good speakers if not really a necessity but would be nice thank you?

1GB RAM, 2GHZ C2D processor and an 160GB hard disk is fairly good for all day to day applications. Dont go for expensive top of the line models, they are not fast like they claim to be.
