Purchasing Dell XPS 14 for schoolwork?

My birthday is coming up this march and I am positive that i'm getting a laptop for school purposes and occasionally some fun like facebook or youtube. I looked up the best laptops of 2012 for college students and one laptop that caught my eye was the Dell xps 14. I LOVE the design, and it looks really good. But, i'm a little worried about comfort, like if I had a long essay to write for school. Would typing be easy and comfortable? I think it has an island style keyboard...but i'm not sure. I want a laptop that is light and portable, because i'm gonna be carrying it around a lot. Also, how durable is it? If i accidently drop it, will it break after that one fall because of how thin it is? I need a durable thin laptop, with a good keyboard, and lots of memory, with a minimum of 2.2GHz. Should i get this laptop or would something else be better? Any suggestions? thanks for your time! :)

I know this because I personally have a Lenovo laptop too and its a lifesaver! The U series is the new line of ultrabooks that Lenovo has designed, which are very thin and light, and has aluminium shell which is both strong and tough.

Lenovo is very reliable as well as I have not had any issues with my laptop, which is a Lenovo G570, since I bought about 8 months back!.

Lenovo is known for their great keyboards as well, which are chiclet style keys. There is enough space between the keys so that you wont make typing errors and they are quiet comfortable to press as well.

im going to be freshman in college this coming fall. hence i need a laptop. the laptop ive have come to like the most is the dell XPS 12. should i buy on black Friday or wait until august how they have college student discounts. (best buy was giving out free xbox 360s last year) what would you guys do? and dose anyone know what deals best buy had for black Friday last year?
okay fine no tablet but i still like the dell xps 13. but i dont think id want a used laptop, i know they aren't bad but id just rather pay for a new one.

Not a tablet - word processing for homework is going to be easier with a keyboard. Trust me on this. A virtual keyboard is not the same...

As to timing, if you want a new computer with the warranty and the best price - go for a clearance price when the latest thing is about to be released....rather like buying a 2012 model car just after the 2013s are out, so the dealers are motivated to get the 2012s off the lot to make space for the NEW model!

If you don't mind a preowned computer (rather like a preowned - read that as "used" - car) - then eBay, Craigslist, and Amazon can be your friend. There are a lot of people who want the NEW and sell their previous (whatever) to help pay for it. A new laptop, a new car, an iPad 3 now that the iPad 4 and the iPad Mini have come out, or even something as large as a new house (or as small as a new iPhone or watch).
