Q. I am currently a college student and have always preferred a desktop. It also appears that it is possible to get more for your money with a desktop, but I am also wondering what the difference is when an I core 5 or 7 is found in a desktop in comparison to a laptop, as well as the difference in graphics cards...also is this laptop a good deal for the money?

I will give you some pointers but do your own research,
(1) You don't need the i7 for your needs, because it is a quad core hyper threading processor, and you will never scratch the surface of it's power.

(2) Windows 7 Home Premium was never developed for the i processor
(3) Most of the software you will be using will be 32 bit applications
(4) You will need to buy 64 bit application software in the future

If you must go for the i processor then the i5 is the one to go for, it's cheaper and will do the more than you will ever need to do. Next use an alternative operating that is years a head of MS that have already got the drivers for the i processors and capabilities for hyper threading.

Microsoft will not have these capabilities until the release of windows 8 at the end of this year or sometime in 2012, My advice to you is do your research on the Free Linux kernel (operating system). It is supported and developed by Intel, IBM, AMD, Nvidia, ATI,

Linux runs the worlds fastest HPC (High Powered Computers) It runs it Internet, Check out these web links for your research

Like I said Linux is years ahead of Microsoft's kernel (operating system)

To download the most upto date Linux operating distributions December 2010 and January 2011 then look here

oh you get all the professional application software that you will ever need or want free . including Office applications

I am a college student, not majoring in anything where I need to do more than Word, Excel, Powerpoint. I use Photoshop CS3 and Flash CS3 for fun. I might pick up video editing if I have time. I've always been a big gamer but I play most of my games on XBOX 360. If I had a better gaming laptop I think I'd play Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, Starcraft II, Company of Heroes, and more RTS games. I want it to run quiet and not over heat, obviously. Size and weight is not a big deal but durability is. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and the left hinge just broke and I don't want to close it in fear it will break. That is the only reason I'm sketchy about getting a Dell or Alienware, since they make them with two small separate hinges rather than one big hinge like the HP or Macbook Pros. But I like the backlit keyboards on the Dells which the HP does not. I think I've narrowed it down to three laptops but am open if you know of any others. Basically looking for reliable, durable, i7 Core, 6-8GB RAM, 1GB+ Video Card for around $1000-1400. I am concerned about the Alienware being too small compared to a 15.6". Will all these laptops be able to handle the games? I feel like if they can those they can do anything else I really need.

Hey! I have one question... if it doesn't have to be new I recommend using craigslist.com, I met this awesome lady who sells me ultra nice laptops, for instance.. I just purchased an IBM R51 laptop from her, it came with Microsoft office 2007 PROFESSIONAL! acronis (backs up data) and many other programs not to mention an extended battery... at the sweet cost of $175.00. it has windows XP Professional which is my Favorited edition, and it looks brand new! with a carrying bag & charger... and she will upgrade it just how you want it for a very reasonable price. :)

please... don't waste money like $1,000 for something that can easily break...

I promise you will be highly satisfied...

& look around! take the money you save and buy some awesome programs for it you like.
