I will be studying science at uni next year and I am looking to buy a laptop in about 6 months. It needs to be portable and good for extended typing and internet searching. I don't know much about the laptops on the market so any help would be great.

If your major is not computer science, computer graphics design, video production, etc. then something like an Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820T-7633, Samsung Q430 14-Inch HD LED, or HP G62-220US should be fine. Those are all pretty nice laptops all around.

note: The samsung is the better of the three there.

Those are mid-range laptops, so they should work well. Mid range means they are in in between low end -- just the bare minimum, and high end which is having the most power, quality, and efficiency.

There's always a Macbook Book pro computer too. Those are expensive, but they are high end as they are well built and very efficient. Only time I would steer you away from a Macbook pro is if you are a computer science major and need to do programing.

Should I get the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro?

I'm a sophomore college student and it's time to buy a new laptop and of course, I'm torn between the Air and the Pro. Here's where I'm at:

-I'm a pre-med/sociology major. I write lots of lab reports and essays.
-Obviously, Microsoft Office is a must
-I'm not a big music/movie listener/watcher, though I'm on Netflix and Youtube a lot
-Universities are updating and the use of a hard drive is unneeded for me
-Really the only things I would use the computer for is essays, lab reports, research, web browsing, and netflix.

I'm leaning more towards the Air, because I like how practical it is, especially since I'm always on the move and taking my laptop with me. Plus it is way more classy than the pro! Haha but these are just from my observations. I would love to hear some other opinions!

Also, if it's any use, I have the basic MacBook right now from 2011. It's been a good computer, but now it's literally falling apart =(

And a HP is not an option =)
I should probably add that I'm looking at the 13" versions at the cheaper price. College kid has to have a budget I'm afraid.
