Im a freshman in college and i need a new laptop for school. I will be doing a lot of web surfing and writing papers. Any suggestions on good quality laptops at a good price. Under $500 would be ideal. Also i heard Asus was a reliable brand?

I had an Asus u46e series laptop for school. I loved it! ...That is until I had an issue with it. My experience with Asus customer support and service was terrible! I spent hours on the phone with them and got really no where. I was just trying to find a part for my laptop that stopped working. They told me to contact their warehouse but couldn't give me their warehouse's phone number. After a bit a research, I found out how to contact the warehouse and they told me to call customer support because I couldn't order parts.

It was a great computer, until something went wrong with it.

I am a non-art major student. I am looking for a cheap (under 500$) tablet with handwriting recognition. I do not want to have to be connected to a laptop in order to use it. I just want a tablet with a stylus that I can write on. I have heard good things about Wacom however it seems that those are just for drawing and photoshop, or they have to be connected to a laptop to use. Help? Suggestions?
