Laptops for college bound students?

Mollie

I'm going off to EIU in the fall and I'll be needing a laptop. I don't want a mac, they aren't compatible with my major's programs that i'll use. I need something fast, and big hard drive, not easily breakable, and something pretty is always nice. :] haha. I'm not computer savy at all. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot!

As long as you're not limiting yourself to a Mac, then the whold computer world is open to you. There are more computer brands than you would care to deal with, but especially since you're a basic computer user, stick to the major brands: Dell, HP, Lenevo, Toshiba, etc. If you want a decked out system, you can go to any of their sites and configure your own system however you want it--get as large a hard drive as you like, more memory, better graphics, etc.

I would also suggest checking out the computer store at your new school--most major universities should have a computer store/department. You can get student discounts and the should provide you service too. They should also do custom orders too if you want your own configuration too, but they will cost more.

Get a Mac. I know it sounds cliche, but it really is the best notebook for College. In my University, more professors and students are changing to Macs.

Macs are great for college because it is a very stable system. It is not affected by viruses that bring down Windows systems. In college there will be a lot of file sharing and networking, so virus attacks are everywhere. Get a Mac and you wont have to deal with downtime. You wouldnt have to make excuses to your professor on why you didnt get to finish your paper coz your Windows machine went down coz of a virus.

Also, it is a very compatible system. Virtually anything plugs into it without having to install drivers and stuff.

It also boots Windows. You can boot Windows when you need Windows-specific programs. That also means more compatibility in addition to what is offered by the Mac OS.

It runs Microsoft Office, which is a must for everything in this computer age. Just remember to buy the one labeled "Microsoft Office for Mac". I also suggest iWork for Keynote. It is better than PowerPoint, much more clean, and with upcoming support for Keynote in Microsoft Office (i think) it would be a wise choice. Pages will also come in handy for desktop publishing and layout.

And yes, it plays and burns DVD's :D
