Which Apple laptop for Mechanical Engineering student?

Ben

I am looking into purchasing either a MacBook Air (13") or a MacBook Pro (13" or 15" -probably not retina display). Here is how I typically use my computers:

-regularly run AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, MATLAB, and typical office software such as Microsoft Excel and Word (if iWork Pages and Numbers prove to be better, I would be willing to use them instead),

-store files on Google Drive (except for things like music of which I anticipate to have about 15GB in iTunes),

-music recording and video editing in my free time,

-very seldom do I need a disc drive or an ethernet port.

I would be willing to run Parallels if I need Windows for certain software, but I prefer the Mac OS. I also know of rumors that a new MacBook Pro is going to be released soon along with the new Mac OS Mavericks. The new models will probably be out of my price range initially, so I will likely buy on of the current models instead. Does Apple provide a discount or anything for a new operating system if its out when you buy an older model of a laptop?

Answer
I do find Apple MacBooks a total ripoff when considering price/performance and their features. I have been involved in laptop hardware from the industry inside for a long time, and think paying a huge premium for a better battery and some canned software is not worth it. To know the specs,

They are not very good for autocad, and you probably will need the top performance very expensive MacBook Pro 15 and may need to dual boot in Windows Professional. Even the graphics card is consumer gaming even though there are few games that work in OS, and CAD Is certified on the business level Quadro graphics.

Check the hardware requirements of the software you expect to need. There are free office suites for Windows like Kingsoft Office, Libre Office, and Openoffice that are Microsoft compatible.

Macbooks are more reliable in the first year or two, and studies show them as about average after that. They are highly susceptible to liquid and physical shock damage, and although now common in college, their damage is common also and NOT under warranty.

To answer your question, you can expect to need MacBook Pro 15 as high a performance as you can get. CPU benchmark and graphics on a second tab.

Thinkpads and Ideapads and a few of the business level Dell and HP and Toshiba are probably more appropriate, but, you want a MacBook regardless of the weak performance for the price because it is simpler in non-engineering tasks, so the MacBook Pro 15, and if it doesn't work right for your schoolwork, it is your own fault. Autocad is designed to run on tower PCs and servers running versions of Windows with high performance CPUs and graphics and plenty of ram.
