I will be going to college this fall and I wanted to purchase a Mac. I heard that they're really good computers for Graphic Designer, but I'm not sure which one to get.

I love using macs for graphic designing.
I can't really give you any tech specs on it as to why its better than a pc when running design programs, but one thing about Macs is that they have a virus immunity, which means that all your creative work is safe and sound on your computer. There are only something like 2 known trojans out there for macs, compared to billions on PCs. You don't even need to run anti-virus on the mac.
Do you have an Apple Store near you? I would go there, tell them what you need, and they can assist you in choosing a model. Plus students get discounts through Apple products, but I don't that extends to cover software. If not, you can always go to their website and compare specs.
The thing about running programs like Photoshop or Lightroom on a Mac, is that the interface is so much cleaner and easier to deal with compared to PCs. That's because all the software was originally designed for a Mac to begin.
Since you said laptop, there's the Macbook, the Macbook Air, and the Macbook Pro. The Air is super duper thin, so it's travel sized. The Macbook is your standard buy in. But the Pro is like the daddy of mac notebooks. Since you're a student, I'd recommend the 13" Pro, which is $1200. You'll get a student discount on that, which can bring you down to around $1000- $1100. The thing with Apple is that their stuff is pricy, but let me tell you, for everything a mac can do for your designing, AND as a computer, it's worth it.

are tablet laptops good for graphic design students?

I use photoshop a lot. Im going to college in a few months and though about getting a macbook pro, but than I came across the tablet laptops.
Would it be better to get one of those or a mac?
And also, would a table laptop run a game like WoW for when I have some free time?

And Carling, you honestly think that Linux is a good choice for graphic design?? Yeah, come back when either the Adobe Creative Suite runs flawlessly in Linux or the world switches to GIMP. Until then, enough of your incessant rabid open-source fanboyism.
