Good Laptop for College Student?

Frank

This fall will be my first year in college, and i have begun to shop around for laptops. I am an Economics Business Major, but I am also pursuing either a minor or a double major in Political Science. So, i will mostly use my laptop for writing essays, working on PowerPoint's, and excel spreadsheets, and research. I do not want to buy a Mac or a Sony, as i have already determined them to be overpriced, and simply not worth the money (personal preference). So I have narrowed it down to Dell, HP, and Acer. I'm looking to spend somewhere between $400 and $750. I want the laptop to be durable (i.e. not breaking down every other day), portable, and contain good battery life and memory (at least 3 GB of Ram). Thank You!

Answer
Most laptops can handle that. But I can tell you right now you do not want a dell or an acer they're the two worst. Dell is a bad company and Acers are built poorly.

HP is a great brand, other great brands are aces, toshiba, compaq and sony. Not all sony are over priced I bought one six months age for $650 dollars, 4GB, great processors, dedicated graphic card and 500GB hard drive. You just have to know where to find them.

So here are some great laptops that will work for you. I only listed intel processors, as you don't want to have AMD.

Laptops for college. What to get?

Jeff S

I'm going to college next year, so I don't need a laptop at this exact moment. But I'm want to know which kind of laptop would be best for a college student?

I'm getting a job 2nd semester, and I want to know how much of the funds from that should I put into my laptop.

I'm probably going into finance, economics, or business.

Should I get a tablet PC or a simple lightweight laptop or should I get one of those $100-300 laptops that are super small?

Thanks!
But how important is it to be able to write notes and save them on your computer? I'm not necessarily a paper notes guy, but will a tablet fix that?

Also, I'm not a Mac person either, never used one in my life. Is the learning curve pretty simple?

Answer
I would assume that you need a laptop that can run an office suite, surf the internet, and answer emails.

Any laptop will do that.

Find one that you can afford, and it will do those things.

If you want one that is super small, and ultra light, get one. If you want one that is bigger, get one. But seriously, your system requirements are not at all an issue. You can do what you need on a used laptop from 5 years ago.
