Laptop For a Student/Writer/Gamer???

Hello,

I'm a student who needs a Laptop. What i'm looking for is something fast, and with lots of space. This is what I will do with it, I hope it can narrow down any Laptops you might think of listing:

-Microsoft office
-A game the size of World of Warcraft
-Good graphics for movies I might watch
-music: room for lots of Music

These are most of the things i'll be using the Laptop for, what can any of you suggest that will fit the above listed software, and functions, with still enough room to spare for speed. Please let me know what is good. Price range i'm lookin at is abour $500-$800

Virtually any laptop in your price range will fit your needs. World of Warcraft has very modest system requirements... almost anything built today can handle it. You might want a bigger screen size with higher resolution to get more of your WoW UI to fit on your screen. I remember it being VERY painful playing on a 1024 x 768 resolution while raiding in Molten Core.

I think you should head to your local Best Buy and just look around at what they offer because your decision appears to be more of a matter of style (color, how thick is it), weight, size, and "extras". "Extras" include webcam, how the speakers sound, the touchpad, keyboard feel and battery life. Those little things will make a big impact on whether or not you'll like your laptop or not.

Get a decent HD as they aren't that much more to upgrade. 7200 RPM is better for those load-times between WoW zones (it's heavily dependent on disk I/O rate)

What is the best laptop(or desktop) for game design?

I am looking into a laptop or a desktop that is reliable for game designing as I am a student majoring in Game Design. Price isn't a problem, but it should be reliable and contain a cpu and a graphics card that can handle graphic intensive games. Thanks

custom built will get you the fastest you can get, and allot cheaper then a slower preassembled one. trust me. if you need a laptop then go with asus, they make great quality and very fast gaming laptops. if you really want to blow a bunch of cash you can do alienware, but there such a huge rip its insulting. asus for laptops, custom built for desktops. the new 6 core AMD cpus and dual gpu ATI graphics cards put together with high speed ddr3 ram and a super fast motherboard and some RAIDed high speed solid state drives, dang you could be faster then anything alienware currently has to offer.

Laptops in general pose a challenge for upgrading because everything is on a very limited amount of space (not to mention much of what's in a given brand is a proprietary piece of hardware, meaning you won't save in the long run). If you're looking to save funds, the bare minimum I'd recommend is whatever the lowest duo core processor they have, 2 GB of ram (3 if vista is your only option), and a large enough harddrive to last you for awhile (unless you are big into storing movies on your drive, 80 GB should really be plenty - harddrives are also among the easiest things to swap out in a laptop, so should you need to you can always upgrade that later).

Most of the really work intensive things in a laptop are not things you'd replace unless something went wrong anyway - power supply, motherboard, processor.

Best advice on a laptop - pay for the bits you want from the manufacturer - adding RAM is easy, and you can save a few bucks cutting down on that, but understand - the moment you crack into that laptop's case, you generally will void the manufacturers warranty. So if you're not a very tech savy person, in the long run you may be better off letting sony put in the guts you want.

I am going to enter my college year next summer. I wonder what is the most suitable laptop for business student because I have heard that mac is not really appropriate. Someone told me that there were some business application which could not run on apple. Is that true ?

It depends on your price range. You can get a well equipped HP for about $500-600. It'll take care of day to day usage and it'll handle a good number of video games (whether you play them or not, that's usually a good benchmark). In my opinion HP is your best deal right now, they're decently priced and they're good, stable builds. I had a Dell laptop and desktop, both are currently sitting in my closet and I'm now using HP desktops and laptops. I don't like Macs at all, and the only fields they really excel in are graphic/video editing.

It also depends on how portable you need it to be. You can get a very small ultra-portable laptop for around $300, but they usually don't have CD or DVD drives and they're really just for the basics.

Keep in mind, laptops are very hard to upgrade, so don't sell yourself short and buy something just because it's cheap, you'll regret it later on. Shoot for at least a 1.6 - 2 GHz processor and at least 2GB of RAM (You can get away with 1, but I'd recommend at least 2). A hard drive at least 100 GB is plenty for most people, but if you can get a good deal get as big of a Hard Drive as possible. Graphics card doesn't really matter unless you want to play games.
