Me!

Basically I want a laptop I can do work on, watch DVDs, store photos and videos and for it to preferably have a webcam/microphone. I don't have a big budget but I know i'll have to pay quite a bit for a good quality one just no ridiculously overpriced ones!
What laptops would you recommend and do you have any ones you wouldn't recommend?
Thanks

Answer
The Mac beats all. The fav of college students and pofessors alike.
Apple MacBook Pro Spring 2010 (Core i7 2.66GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 15-inch)
Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro keeps the same look and feel, but offers major internal changes, including an optional Intel Core i7 CPU, making it a very serious portable powerhouse.

Price: $1,999.99 - $2,199.00 (check prices)
4.0 stars Excellent
Overall score: 8.3 (4.0 stars)

HP Envy 17
Though it's still in the upper ranges of current laptop prices, HP's upscale-feeling Envy 17 offers great hardware at a decent price.

Price: $1,499.99 (check prices)
4.0 stars Excellent
Overall score: 8.2 (4.0 stars)

Toshiba Portege R705-P25
Toshiba's Portege R series has always impressed, and the new 13-inch Portege R705 is close to a perfect balance of design, price, and performance.

Price: $1099.99 (check prices)
4.0 stars Excellent
Overall score: 8.2 (4.0 stars)

Dell Inspiron 1545 15.6-Inch Laptop I1545-3232OBK (Obsidian Black), 2.3GHz Intel CPU; 2GB Memory; 250GB HD; DVD/CD±R/RW; Windows 7 Home Premium
Offers more bang for the buck than most, combining great audio and rock-solid features for less than $1,000.

Price: $539.99 (check prices)
4.0 stars Excellent
Overall score: 8.0 (4.0 stars)

All things considered I would recommend the Toshiba Portege R705-P25 for price and quality.
More info here. Still the Dell is least expensive and a good work machine to boot.

Microsoft Office and Samsung Net Book Question?

Liliana

I'm going to buy a laptop soon for college, and i was wondering if most laptops already come with Office included (not the trial version). How much extra does it cost to have it already installed?
I'm thinking of getting a Samsung Net Book from Best Buy. Are there any major downfalls to Net Books?

Answer
They usually give you a TRIAL version of office for free 30-90 days.
You can choose to buy a version after that whether it be the very inexpensive student and home version or a full copy. Microsoft give UNBELIEVABLE deals to college students, last year Office 2010 FULL edition was only $15 bucks. You can also download open office for free.

Do NOT pay to have it installed If you can play a cd, or download a song, you can install it yourself.

You should rethink gtting a netbook if you are going to college. Netbooks are GREAT tools. MUCH more powerful than the pads and tablets you see, but they are VERY limited (under powered) compared to a REAL computer. They have no dvd drive, they are slow, they are VERY hard to type on if you are going to take notes. There is no real video card, so screen resolution is mediocre but that is OK since you are viewing on such a small screen. I tend to get fatigue using one for more than an hour and my kids say they use it for up to two hours before it becomes annoying. You can buy a REAL entry level laptop for only 50 bucks more. IF you get a netbook you will ALSO need a REAL computer at home or in the dorm.

On the good side, they are lighter and smaller to carry than a notebook. You can remote in to a "real computer". They get very good battery life. If you're in junior college, you can probably get away with a netbook as long as you are not a science, engineering major, then you will need a REAL computer. They are GREAT tools as long as you understand their limitations. My kids have BOTH a notebook AND a netbook for college.

samsung makes a pretty good netbook, but you should also look at the eeepc by ASUS, the toshiba and the hackintosh favorite the dell mini. The dell duo is interesting too because it converts from tablet to netbook. Avoid acer/emachines, gateway
