Best Laptop For College Student?

emmie

i need a new laptop. i bought a basic dell about 3 years ago and its just not cutting it anymore. its slow and freezes all the time causing me to restart it.

so, i start college in the fall. i'm going for vet medicine so nothing tech-ey. i need a fairly basic computer. fast. wireless internet. don't care about screen size. needs microsoft word and stuff (at least compatible-- doesn't need to be installed. doesn't really need games as long as i have solitare lol. umm i watch a lot of videos but don't really need anything special for that..

so what would be the best? i don't have an exact budget in mind but i dont really want to spend toooo much. so best value for my money? thanks!

Answer
Opps - forgot the most important part. If you know what college you're going to, check to see if they have a recommendation. Some courses require PC computers, which makes Macs somewhat difficult to use. Macbook Pros are nice machines, but you're looking at $1100 for the base model, even with the educational discount.

A current, mainstream laptop in the $500 range will fit your modest needs. As long as it has a dual core processor (do NOT get the bargain basement version) and 3+ GB, it will handle web browsing, email, MS Office and HD video watching with ease. Solitare and light gaming like Sims 3 and World of Warcraft will strain this level machine. Hard core gaming or heavy HD video editing are out of it's league.

Answer
In spite of what people say, DELL ROTS, and here's why:

Poorly made. Mechanically, they stink. Tech support is terrible. Batteries "EXPLODE". (You heard it in the news last spring).

Go with Toshiba. Great technical support, well built, good value. Available at many retail stores, where you can SEE what you are getting.

Big screen, means too heavy
Lightweight, means too small

So you see, you must LOOK and judge for yourself. Visit Wal-mart, Costco or Staples where they have a no-hassle return policy. Watch for Going Back to College specials.

Good luck and Happy Computing!
