1.school work

2. movies and gaming (free time)
Also, i will be carrying it around sometimes.
what size should i buy? 13' or 15' or 17' ? maybe something else? weight?

i suggest to buy a 10 or 13 inch and another 19 inch screen. so make sure the laptop can drive two screens (most do)

Laptops are excellent for running a second screen.
So please consider this
Two screens are a lot of fun. Assignment on one, internet, research on the other. Game on one, messenger on other.
I suggest to buy the laptop to suit your travelling needs, and have a second 19 inch screen at main base to plug into.
If you moving the laptop every day, so that you plugging into the main base every day, I suggest to set up a docking station complete with usb mouse and usb keyboard, and of course the second screen.
The docking station sets the laptop at a 45 degree angle so its keyboard is 45 degrees and you hinge open the lid so its vertical.
If you have 19 inch on its own stand, then the top of the laptop is the same height as the top of the 19 inch..
Now you can buy the second screen and docking station later on, and the docking station is not really necessary for home use, but for office use its best practice, so ensure you get a brand that has this available, if you think you need it..
If you walking a lot eg college, then gives you the opportunity to buy a light weight small screen type that's easy to carry

1. Weight - If you are going to carry it to and fro to school/office then consider getting a lightweight model. An external CD drive may be an option as if you not into burning disks or watching DVD then you hardly use the CD drive. Something about less than 2 kg is a lightweight. Anything over 2 kg is very heavy to carry.
2. Battery Life, - if you never going to use it on batteries then you can go bigger processor and larger screen. You can consider not buying the battery if appropriate. You can have two power supplies; one at home and one in the office is good for large heavy laptops.
If you want to use the laptop on batteries then you may have to choose a smaller processor and a smaller screen so you can get the hours required out of the battery.
3. Software, iI suggest to get the same software as you College or Buisness uses (XP or Vista, Office 2003 or 2007). When they update, you update.
4. Minimum specifications â
Games will require more specifications â more ram and âmore video card specs â more processor power.
A 1.6ghz processor is not good enough for big games, a 2,4Ghz is more suitable.
Generally though:

-Consider a high speed hard drive
- Consider 120GB Hard drive or larger
- Consider an external DVD drive or an Internal Burner -depending on your needs

4 Ensure the hdd is NTFS file system

I'm going to be leaving for university later this summer, and wanted to make an early jump on shopping. What would be the top 10 must have items for a girl in college? I already have a laptop.

Forgive me for going over ten, but I thought they were all pretty important.
Desk organisers and other storage spaces - This includes closet hangers, hooks, hangable storage (those hanging fabric compartments for closets, like the ones you can buy at ikea), plastic sets of drawers on wheels, and space saving shoe storage. I'd also consider a small metal lock box. You maybe sharing a room with a friend, but it could also be a total stranger. Even if you get to know a person, its difficult to spot a closet klepto. Keep your favourite/most valuable things in this little lock box. They way, you know your stuff is always safe.
wheeled laundry basket/hamper (also include necessary extras such as laundry detergent and fabric softener here)- I emphasis solid plastic and with wheels rather than the average fabric sack type. This is because then you don't need a hamper AND a basket. I bought one at Walmart. Its a big white plastic bin with two back wheels and a retractable handle. I find it is multifunctional because you can use it as a hamper which conveniently rolls behind you, then, after you've done your laundry, you can fold up your clothes, set them inside and wheel the whole thing back to your room without having a big fabric sack that wrinkles up your freshly done clothes.
Iron and mini ironing board - You're at college and while not everything will be worth ironing/need ironing, you're going to kick yourself when there are those select few things you need to iron, but can't.
Power bar and appropriate cables for everything- Dorm rooms don't have as many outlets as are ideal, especially if you end up in a shared room, and therefore end up sharing outlets. This will help you ensure you can have everything plugged in that you want plugged in at all times and, if you get one with surge protection, your things are safe in case of a power surge.
Shower caddy and everything it needs - nNbody likes having to juggle all their stuff to the showers and back, especially if everything is all wet on the way back. Its just very handy little thing.
Bathrobe and flip flops- Its annoying to to have to either carry your clothes back to your room while wrapped in a towel. Its also annoying carry clothes with you, then having to entirely dry off and change before going back to your room. A bathrobe allows you to stay covered up to and from the showers without extra stuff to drag around. The flip flops are good to wear in the showers so that you don't get anything manky like athletes foot, as well as wearing to and from the showers so that you're not barefoot, but don't need to worry about getting a good pair of shoes wet.
Personal organiser - With so many classes, projects and social things going on, making sure you keep deadlines and dates in line is crucial.
Handheld recorder - Depending on what you're studying, its nice to have something as a fail safe in case you miss something your professor says while taking notes.
First aid kit - From paper cuts aquired while sifting through study sheets to scrapped knees as a result of a drunken night out, you want to have something to take care of the smaller medical situations that aren't worth going to the health services center for.
Tupperware and zip lock bags- These are good for saving leftovers and bringing some of mom's goodies from home. The bags, on top of being good for leftovers, are handy as make shift carriers for extra pens, etc as well as a way to keep reciepts organised.
Minifridge if your room allows/doesn't already provide one - Sort of obvious. Why go to a vending machine at 2am when you could stock your own snacks and drinks?
Digital camera - To keep record of all the memories.
Wall decors - To make your dorm feel more personal and "homey".
