Best Laptop For College Student?

emmie

i need a new laptop. i bought a basic dell about 3 years ago and its just not cutting it anymore. its slow and freezes all the time causing me to restart it.

so, i start college in the fall. i'm going for vet medicine so nothing tech-ey. i need a fairly basic computer. fast. wireless internet. don't care about screen size. needs microsoft word and stuff (at least compatible-- doesn't need to be installed. doesn't really need games as long as i have solitare lol. umm i watch a lot of videos but don't really need anything special for that..

so what would be the best? i don't have an exact budget in mind but i dont really want to spend toooo much. so best value for my money? thanks!

Answer
Opps - forgot the most important part. If you know what college you're going to, check to see if they have a recommendation. Some courses require PC computers, which makes Macs somewhat difficult to use. Macbook Pros are nice machines, but you're looking at $1100 for the base model, even with the educational discount.

A current, mainstream laptop in the $500 range will fit your modest needs. As long as it has a dual core processor (do NOT get the bargain basement version) and 3+ GB, it will handle web browsing, email, MS Office and HD video watching with ease. Solitare and light gaming like Sims 3 and World of Warcraft will strain this level machine. Hard core gaming or heavy HD video editing are out of it's league.

Qwerty

Hey I am trying to decide what laptop to get for college this year. I am looking for something relatively small and light but something that is fast and reliable. Right now I have two that I am looking into alot. One being the HP tx25000z tablet notebook ( the one where you can actually wrote on the screen) and the Thinkpad T61 by Lenovo. I am looking for something under the price range of $1000 or a little over. Any suggestions or opinions on which is better for a college student.
Also, anyone who has had or used one of those tablet notebooks, what are your thoughts about them and how useful were they?

Thank You

Answer
First thing i have to say is...do not go Apple, never go Apple, they are too expensive, and nothing is compatible with it, HP is probably the best, with the widest range of selections, i own the dv9000 and i love it, i would suggest a smaller screen size though, 17 is a bit big. dell is too expensive and every thing else is crap.
