Best Laptop For College Student?

emmie

i need a new laptop. i bought a basic dell about 3 years ago and its just not cutting it anymore. its slow and freezes all the time causing me to restart it.

so, i start college in the fall. i'm going for vet medicine so nothing tech-ey. i need a fairly basic computer. fast. wireless internet. don't care about screen size. needs microsoft word and stuff (at least compatible-- doesn't need to be installed. doesn't really need games as long as i have solitare lol. umm i watch a lot of videos but don't really need anything special for that..

so what would be the best? i don't have an exact budget in mind but i dont really want to spend toooo much. so best value for my money? thanks!

Answer
Opps - forgot the most important part. If you know what college you're going to, check to see if they have a recommendation. Some courses require PC computers, which makes Macs somewhat difficult to use. Macbook Pros are nice machines, but you're looking at $1100 for the base model, even with the educational discount.

A current, mainstream laptop in the $500 range will fit your modest needs. As long as it has a dual core processor (do NOT get the bargain basement version) and 3+ GB, it will handle web browsing, email, MS Office and HD video watching with ease. Solitare and light gaming like Sims 3 and World of Warcraft will strain this level machine. Hard core gaming or heavy HD video editing are out of it's league.

I need something cheap so would used or refurbished be better? and as far as gigs and bites and all that I HAVE NO STINKING CLUE!!! so if you could just suggest a brand and what its got ... that would be good for mainly writing papers and researching online then please let me know.

HI there. That's great that you are looking to buy a laptop. I know the person ahead of me mentioned a MacBook but from what I can tell of your explanation you are on somewhat of a budget. Macbooks are quite a bit more expensive than your average laptop. I would strongly recommend the Sony Vaio laptops and perhaps a Dell laptop would not be such a bad idea. I am attaching a few links here to Best Buy showing you what these laptops look like and their price range. Ideally if you can find one on ebay then that's very cool too you just have to shop smart there. Gigs or gigabytes refers to either the amount of memory available to save files such as documents, movies, music etc and that is found in the harddrive. Gigs can also be used to measure the RAM of your laptop. Essentially the more ram a laptop has the faster it can run and the more things it can do all at once. The Sony laptop has 1 gig of ram but the dell has 2 gigs so the Dell can multitask a bit more. Well anyway I hope this helps you.
