I need a laptop under $1300. It must be fast when multitasking. It will be used for programing, studying, and Gaming. It should have Microsoft Office. Three hours of battery life would be good. The hard drive storage must be above 150gb. It's not a necessity, but an optical drive would be nice. I don't want it to heat up to much.

Answer
For $1300 you should be looking at Asus, Samsung, Sony with an i7 Intel processor 8 gig of ram, and minimum of 500 gig hard drive,

Next here is 35 plus years of computer experience telling you, that the operating systems that comes installed on it is far from the best, in fact it is the worlds worst operating system for crashing, freezing up, slowing down and viruses, it always has been and always will be, You should already know that by now any how,

If you want a computer that never gives you any problems, then you want an operating system that always fast, stable and secure and virus free. You state you want it for programing, No problem. Gaming. No problem. studying, No problem It should have Microsoft Office. Why? It's not the only office package in the world, there are other Free Office packages that are compatible with all the same features and more besides,

Windows 8 (not out yet) is 10yrs behind Linux, I know because I have been running it for a couple of months, With Linux you don't have to install it to use it, It can be run from a DVD Rom or a USB thumb drive You have heard of Android well that is developed from Linux operating system and that is kicking apples butt for speed and innovation,

what laptop is good for a budget of under $500?

Hey guys,

I am a college freshmen. Was wondering that which laptops are good for a typical college student that will be good for typical things like word, lab reports some music and just overalll for a budget of under $500?

A laptop that would go for awhile and not break in a year or so?

Answer
Well, for that price range don't expect much performance, but with the way you will be using it, that shouldn't be a problem. Since there are so many computer brands out on the market, its hard to recommend one, but i'll try.

Stay away from dell. They break down a lot and are just crap. You can get better laptops for cheaper and with better customer support.

Try HP, sony, or toshiba, as i have heard good things from them. Finding a laptop for under 500 from them shouldn't be hard. With the way you will be using you laptop, i can suggest the hardware you should look for in your laptop.

You will want to try and get an intel core 2 duo processor. Since this is a laptop under 500, that might be hard to find. As for the processing power, dont expect anything fast. You will probably get something around 2.0 GHz, but it will probably be last generation 800 MHz front side bus instead of the new 1066 MHz frontside but, so it will be slower, but its still fast for word processing and such.

The ideal size of hard drive for laptops is 250 GB, but for a laptop of this price, expect 160 GB. still, 160 GB will easily hold all of you homework and reports as well as a lot of music. Stick with a hard drive with 5400 rpm, as this will reduce the amount of power needed and heat created, and can extend the life of you harddrive.

You probably won't need much RAM, but still, the more the better. 1 GB is the bare minimum, and since your laptop will most likely be running windows, you will want 2 or 3 GB as windows is a memory hog. Thankfully, most HP laptops offer a free upgrade to 3 GB of ram, so your set there.

Dont worry about graphics cards. For 500$, your gonna get shit for graphics, but with what you will be using it for, you don't really need graphics card. Just don't expect to play any new games on you laptop. (hope you got and xbox or playstation ;) )

The biggest size screen you will want is 15 inches. Anymore than that and you will lose mobility. 15 inches is the ideal blend between usability and mobility.

The battery is a very important part of the laptop. If your gonna be using this laptop on the go alot, then your gonna want a battery with at least 9 cells, preferably 12 cells. But, since your only spending 500$, expect a 6 cell battery that will last you 3 hours with normal use.

Based on these specs, I would reccomend you get the HP G60t. This model has a 15.6 inch display, intel core 2 duo processor with 800 MHz frontside bus(last generation model), 3 GB of DDR2 memory, 160 GB 5400 rpm hard drive, and a 6 cell battery as the only option. All this for exactly 500 dollars, not including tax.
