My laptop have some serious viruses that it took a while just to get this question posted! I started college a month ago and i just can't afford to spend extra money on security at the moment. Is there any trusted free downloads i can use to rid of these viruses for now? My internet is so slow it's very frustrating :/ Thanks guys

Answer
If you don't have an antivirus program, you should really get one.

But firstly, completely shut down your computer completely. Turn it back on but while it boots up keep tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. You should see a screen that asks you what operating system you want to boot from. Use your arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter. When your computer boots up, run your favorite web browser and navigate to http://malwarebytes.org and download MalwareBytes Free. Install it, update it, and run a full scan. Go for a walk as this may take awile.

When you come back, if it shows threats, choose the option to remove them all. It will ask you to reboot. Reboot.

Once your computer boots back up (in normal mode) go get a better antivirus program (be sure to uninstall your old one) at http://www.avast.com/en-us/get/Pz90ZDAM

Once you've installed avast! Free Antivirus, run a full scan. Make yourself a cup of coffee and watch your favorite movie, as this will also take awhile. If avast! detects anything, choose the option to remove it. Allow it to reboot your computer, and most, if not all, of your viruses should be gone.

Hopefully this helped!

Is it useful having a laptop in university?

I think it would be incredibly convenient as writing term papers and researching in my own personal station would be easier than sharing a computer in a library full of other students waiting to get a use of it.

But I have this nagging opinion in my head that's literally yelling telling me that it's unnecessary.

My "think-I-should-get-it" side is advising that it is the best thing to get, whilst the "unnecessary" side is just becoming a irritating mosquito bite.

What's your opinion about owning a laptop/computer in post-secondary?

Answer
I owned one for 3 out of 4 years that I was an undergraduate and I thought it was the greatest thing ever.

Of course, I was an English major that was constantly typing paper after paper after paper and doing research. If I hadn't gotten the laptop, I would've spent my four years in the library computer labs.

I used a computer for EVERYTHING in college. A lot of my professors like for us to turn things in electronically (like email) instead of printing hard copies, so having a computer was very necessary.
