What is a good laptop for a student going to college?

Im looking to buy my daughter a laptop for christmas that she will also be taking to college. I would to spend 600 or at most 700 dollars. She said the only thing she wanted was a webcam, good brand, and not too big so like 15 inch. Should i buy an HP or Dell. What proccessor? Help theres just too much. Thanks!

Now, I'll let you in on two secrets.

#1 - Brand does NOT matter.
All laptops are made in China or Taiwan by one or two companies and have the "brand names" slapped onto them at the end.

#2 - Schoolwork is NOT hard work.
Even an old Pentium-I using Windows 95 could do her schoolwork. You'll be paying too much with a budget of $600, believe me.

This laptop is more than enough for her with its AMD V-Series CPU, 2GB of DDR3, 250GB Hard Drive and ATi Mobility Radeon HD 4250 graphics processor.

My university laptop has an AMD Athlon 64 X1 2650e, 2GB of DDR2, a 160GB Hard Drive and primitive ATi Radeon X1200 graphics. Even that is more than I need for school. She'll love this one. I will make this VERY clear. ANY money you spend on a laptop more expensive than this one is literally money down the toilet. If you want to spend $600, give her this laptop and send her $300 when she needs money. Believe me, she'll be asking you for money...LOL

What is the best laptop for an architecture student who produces music?

I need a laptop that is fast, goood graphics and a good soundcard. I run autocad and 3max and for music Fl studio. I know macs are the best but i am afraid running parallels will ruin everything, the programs work only om windows :(
