As you are a student so don't need to spent too much for the laptop when you can get a good one in less than $1000. There is one option out there of ASUS which is just perfect to perform different everyday tasks. It gives superior value while its usage. There are many customers who are satisfied from this purchase. So here is one good comment from an actual user which explains this fact:

It has really good features as well which includes Intel Core i5 3317U 1.7 GHz and 6 GB DDR3. Perfect for fast processing and multitasking. It has 500 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive with 24 GB Solid-State Drive. It has 15.6-Inch Screen with Intel GMA HD. And it has Windows 8.
All of these features and good performance comes under $635 which means you can save up to $365. So this is one good option for which you can go. For other options see here is a list of laptops which are popular ones and comes under $1000 from which you can also decide:

Good laptop for a college student?

I'm looking to buy a laptop, and I'd like to spend around $1000.
I need a machine that's very fast and won't freeze up on me, and with tons of memory (I'm a writer). Screen size...probably around 14.1, because I know the smaller the screen the lighter the computer, and I don't want to lug a monster around campus. I don't know anything about the terms like RAM, MGHz, etc., so pretty much something very fast with lots of memory.
