Buying a refurbished laptop (thinkpad) the good, the bad?

Blue

I was looking on the lenovo website for the laptop that interested me the last time I was there but now its not available anymore. So I have been giving it some thought and have been considering to purchase a refurbished thinkpad x61 from ebay.

Is it better to buy seller refurbished (dock included ($300-400)) or manufacturer refurbished (dock included and W7 ($600-700))?

If I buy seller refurbished then I would have to install Windows 7, is this hard to do on a thinkpad that has Libre Office Suite (writer, spreadsheet, database plus others) and linux ubuntu as the OS?

Is it a good investment for an incoming college student on a tight budget? Or am I going to get ripped off by the sellers and knowing that there are better, new laptops out there?

Is it a good idea to buy this Lenovo Thinkpad x61 from 2007 when its 2012 and there are newer laptops for sale?

IBM/Lenovo thinkpads are some of the best laptops if the best ever on the market. The fact that it is refurbished should not scare you since thinkpads are made to be easily repaired after years of use (IBM coming in and fixing them on the spot for its business consumers after 5 years + is the reason), I open my old thinkpads all the time.

They are asking too much for the laptop. It was not a powerful laptop when it was new, but it has the tablet functionality. If you absolutely need that option them buy a cheaper one, I think that you can buy one in the sub-$200 range easily. Keep in mind that the battery may not hold much of a charge. If you can live with a bigger laptop and without the tablet option, for that price range you can buy a good T series, which also has the ultrabay options such as a second battery, or harddrive.
I bought quite a few thinkpads, but if you want to use the battery, you might need to buy a new one.
They are easily serviceable and very durable, but the lids are easily scratched due to the rubberized coating.

I use a T60p due to the 4:3 screen, plus the gpu is much better than the integrated option.I bought it in non-working order a year ago for $90, and it is more powerful than most new laptops with integrated gpus.
Note that thinkpads with dedicated GPUs run very hot.
Obviously dr mike has no idea what he is talking about.

For general purpose use at college I would say to go with a T400/410 or x200, if you are doing engineering, animation, comp sci etc... then get a T60p/61p or a W series. The older x61 is not very powerful and overpriced. some of the x200 also have the tablet option and should have a good battery life with a new battery.

2012 Macbook Pro with Retina or non Retina?

Drew

So I'm in the market for a new laptop and I want a mac. I have used PC all my life but I want something different and I think the macs are really cool. I will be heading off to college next year so I need something light, thin, and overall compact so I'm looking at the 13'' Macbook Pros. However I cannot decide between getting a regular Macbook Pro or spending a few extra bucks to get the new Retina Display macbook. a few questions for you guys:

Is the retina display really that much better than the regular macbook? Is the macbook screen still really good compared to a PC laptap?

Does one macbook overheat more than the other? I like to use my laptops on my lap so will either one get really hot? Which one is quieter in terms of fan noise and what not?

I've heard that the Retina Display Macbook lags a little, especially on web pages? Is this true? If it is is the lag really that bad/ noticable and does it happen all the time?

Overall, which is a better machine for me (a college student who will be using it all the time)?

thanks for all the help! the more information the better!

Answer
There is no reason what so ever to buy a mac if you don't want the IPS retina display. cause pc is better and cheaper.

The best pc notebook screens are the $75 discontinued AUO B156HW01 V4 or v7 (which still looks crap compared to my IPS desktop screen) and the $500 HP DreamColor IPS screens.
pc notebooks with good screens are exceptionally rare.
